Red Haire??? Lololol

Somehow I've missed that name in the record books.

This program has an endless supply of ridiculous names 😂
That was a new one for me too. Turns out he played here from 1924-28 as a team captain under Keaney, then became an assistant coach in Keaney's last two years before taking over. He went 57-42 from 1948-52

Honest mistakes I can understand. Not saying I won’t yell about it, but I can get over it and I do believe that over time that stuff more or less evens out. High-level sports are hard to officiate - the players are so big and so fast and the plays transpire so quickly that their eyes are bound to play tricks on them and mistakes will happen.

The thing that sets me off with refs is when it becomes about them, their pride, their feelings, etc. They dont like the way a guy looks at them after a tough call, so the next time down they blow a cheap one on the guy; they don’t like the way a guy spoke to them after a call, so they T him up when they could just walk away. I feel like that stuff happens all the time and I just find it infuriating. Nobody paid money to watch you, ref. Your feelings should not be impacting the outcomes of the games.
Honest thing I thought recently, I wonder how much better referees would be if they wore noise cancelling headphones during the game and couldn't hear fans and what the players and coaches were saying. It feels like it would help a lot of the worst refs who get effected by those things but would hurt the best refs who can actually communicate effectively with players and coaches

I think for the most part the refs try their best, but at times get caught up in the moment and screw up.

Don't know if many here remember but the worst called game I ever saw was on 1/14/1976 against South Florida.
I was down there with some frat brothers wearing our URI shirts, and we were really harassed.

Jack Kraft ended up pulling the team off the court in the 2nd half and forfeited the game.
I never saw that big of a home job, it was so obvious.
Kraft later said he felt his players were in physical jeopardy the way his players were unfairly treated by the refs.
The play that finally capped it off was when Jiggy was bringing the ball up-court on a fast-break and was practically tackled and knocked out of bounds, no foul called on South Florida.
Kraft said he had enough that was it.
The worst called game I've ever seen was the game against West Virginia at Mohegan Sun. It wasn't even one sided, it was just three guys that thought they were the show. I was actually groaning in the second half when they'd call something against West Virginia it was so bad

The worst called game was against Iona at the RC in the NIT. The refs needed a police escort off the court.

AJ English was an absolute stud for them.

Cluess had some fun teams to watch at Iona.

Regular NCAA appearances but can’t remember if they ever won a game.

“Sir, if I had that much gel in my hair I could re-grease my whole head.”

Keep in mind that was James Breeding. The same ref that tossed Hurley from the Nova game for hyping up the crowd.

I don’t even think that phrase registers in the top 5000 of things I’ve said at a basketball game. But that first half took 90 mins, something had to give.

They didn’t. His style of play while effective in the MAAC usually got throttled against better talent if memory serves.

The effort across the team - when they made mistakes you had guys going all the way down the court to defend and prevent easy buckets. This team BELIEVES.

New year. New us. 1-0. GO RHODY.
I think this is big. There were at least a couple times they turned it over and it looked like it would be an easy layup, but they ran back and defended/challenged. Joe's might have scored on follow ups to each, iirc, but the hustle back on D, especially when it looked like no chance of stopping the initial shot, was great to see. This team has had several 'breakaway blocks.' Hate to see the TO's but you have to love the recovery hustle on those.

There was one play where Kortright landed on the floor out of bounds after missing a 3P attempt from the corner, then St Joe's rush the ball down the court and a 3P attempt was made from the same corner, opposite end of court of course, and here comes Kortright flying by the shooter just barely missing a blocked shot. I thought what amazing recovery and effort to get back up off the floor and almost block the shot. Doesn't show in the scorebook but was amazing effort.
I did not notice this in the game live, but did notice it when I watched the replay yesterday. Plus after I noticed it, The URI commentator mentioned the same thing about Kortright's hustle - so credit to the broadcast team.

While much discussion goes on about the starting line up and minutes distribution and FREE DUBS, I think credit has to go to Miller who makes the line up decisions. His decision to bench Kortright for a game and start Wright seems to have really put a spark into Kortright's game. Even the game he didn't start he played great when he came in and played 34 minutes. Versus St Joseph's Kortright really elevated his game both offensively and defensively. Miller has also moved Green into the lineup nicely, having him start the 2nd half in place of Montgomery vs SJ. Starting lineup decisions, minutes distribution and substitution actions are in great hands.

Kortright has been our most consistent performer this year by far. Solid every game. Does a little bit of everything and makes good decisions. Not a natural PG but performing well at that position.

Agree, and that is what makes Miller benching him even more interesting. It was like Miller's way of lighting a fire under him to be even better than he was playing. Miller obviously thinks a lot of Kortright as he recruited him to transfer, took him to NYC Barclay's for A10 Media Day and put him right in the starting PG position.
The other guys on the team have to look at Miller not starting Kortright and say to themselves, wow if Miller would bench Luis it could certainly happen to me and then Miller benched Montgomery for Green in the 2nd half of the SJU game.

You would never see Coaching moves like these from the Previous HC

There was a stretch in the first half where Luis was the only guy who could get or hit a competent shot. Every bucket he had was huge.

There’s a reason we wanted him after last years quinnipiac game. Guys a gamer.

One of my favorite shots in basketball. All of the guards should develop one. If he had taken it all the way to the hoop, he might have had it blocked (and yes, I know, maybe drawn a foul), or even run out of time. Love that shot. Tyson Wheeler's lefty tear drop was a thing of beauty. Would especially love to see House develop that shot.

Another observation!

It seemed to me that our overall size really bothered them. While they were quicker than we were, we were able to nullify that with our physicality. I think that our size an athleticism can be something we can hang our hat on in the A-10. Not a lot of A-10 teams can match us in that regard.

The only reason we were able to stay with PC so long was because we were a little bigger than they were and we made them a little uncomfortable inside. They couldn't bully us...until we shot ourselves in the foot and they took advantage of our dumbass sloppy play.

Keep cleaning up the sloppy play, bring that level of physicality to every game and we will get our fair share of wins.
