The players are less than inspiring so far. I hope Archie has some freshmen signing in the fall that will right the ship.

This is incredible. This might be the way it is now with transfers and paying players, but no way can argue that the sport is much worse off than it used to be. So many people I talk with that used to love college basketball more than any sport barely watch it other than a couple games in the tourney.

All you have to do is look at professional sports. Pre-free agency fans knew the team, knew the players, and were invested in "their" team. Once free agency hit, it became a free for all. I can still name every starting player on the 1967 Red Sox. Today's Sox - I look at the roster and wonder who they are and determine it doesn't matter because they'll be gone next year. Disclaimer: Free Agency is the right thing for professional athletes. They had no recourse most of the time regarding their pay. This is where collegiate athletics is headed, however. Don't get too attached because they'll probably be somewhere else next year. Only die-hard fans will stick around.

I believe LSU had this happen last season as well, or something close to it.

Will Wade out, Murray St coach in.

It's not incredible when you recognize that their coach left and players commit to a coach. In the past when this happened a player would be stuck even tho they signed up to play for a certain coach. If a coach leaves the players should be able to as well; that's progress.
Now there are other areas worth picking at but this situation isn't 1 of them.

Here is the new reality, summed up for anyone who is still confused:

1. If you have a coach, like Ed Cooley, and he leaves of his own volition, for another job, expect all of his players to leave with him. ex. PC.

likewise, he is replaced by a similar coach, Kim English, similar in the fact that he left to take another job, and took all of his players with him. ex. GMU

OR

2. If you have a coach like David Cox, beware when you fire him, because while he has no landing site to go to, everyone out there in this college basketball universe, now knows that you can't hold on to your players, because they were loyal to the previous coach, so you are going to get picked to death by every team out there until all of your top players are gone.

Aannnnnnddddd, URI was one of those teams, this past month and a half, doing the picking. Capitalizing on teams who belong in that second category. That's how we got all of our players, minus the two JUCOs. So long as Archie and KJ are here, expect them to do that every single Spring from here on out. Look for the good programs who are firing their coach, and it's party time. We might not need 7 new players every year, but we might need 4-5 depending on who leaves and is cherry picked by another team (Ish), who gradutates (Malik), who is shown the door (Samb et al).

So, all of those guys out there in KeaneyBlue nation, who stand by the David Cox hiring, please note: 1. Not a horrible idea to try to keep the players, but not as great as it once was, but 2. You no longer have the luxury of pulling the plug on that guy after year three, if he doesn't work out, without risking your program being decimated by the vultures who are coming for you.

In some ways you really no longer have a choice to do what PC did and go for someone like English, and pay attention to who they currently have on their team and who they have successfully recruited: because that's going to be your new team.

Coaches value has gone up.

If you have a mid-major that makes the tournament with a large nucleus that are underclassmen then expect the coach + those players to be packaged by the coaches agent when high majors are looking to fill their opening.

You know, last season was the 25th anniversary of the Elite Eight run. And this upcoming season will be the 25th anniversary of the April Fools Day massacre. 25 flippin years.

And people love to make fun of the boosters who said "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!" and they probably deserve it. But they were told, that if Jerry D became coach, Lamar Odom was going to stay, to play one more year, and help his bro out, do him a solid. And people actually believed it. So, if you want to ridicule them, ridicule them for believing that lie.

Because as soon as Jerry got the job, Lamar declared for the draft. And the excuse makers, you know who they are, you have been seeing them on here for over 25 years, they make excuses about everything to try to smooth over the most boneheaded things this program has done, past, present, and future, tried to say "well, we didn't hire him to keep Lamar" Bull to the Sh-t, they didn't. You can almost picture in your mind, the groan Ron Petro let out the moment Lamar declaring for the draft hit the press. That was definitely dangled by Jerry D as a distinct possibility.

Well, I bring this up, because now, in this new reality? Hiring the assistant, top recruiter is much worse than the Jerry D scenario. because even if the players, beg you up and down, looking at you Thorr, that they are going to stay if you give the job to that guy, as soon as the hiring is made and ink isn't even dry, they'll start leaving. They'll all pull a Lamar Odom, is the point I'm making. And everyone out the in college basketball land, paying attention, knows it, and that's why your players will be on the top of their list to start calling.

Even with a coach leaving did this ever happen 10 years ago? It is the wild, Wild west in college basketball these days.

Those were the good old days, you know, like 2 years ago...

It's only necessary to recognize what is happening, and to form your NEW strategies based on what is happening today. And not use the old standby strategies that are over 30 years old, and no longer work.

And that's also why I say, Archie and KJ and the lot, did pretty damn good job, relatively speaking. For a mid major team, in the basement of their conference, losing their top player, and having to turn over 2/3rds of a roster, they effectively navigated this new reality and got some good players. Now, would you expect more 365 days from now? Sure, but for right now, they did an almost amazingly good job. Especially compared to comparable teams out there.

No because players had to sit out a year even if they were committed to a coach that left. That wasn't right either.

Well actually BAR, prior to the rule changes, the NCAA was much more lenient in granting immediate play waivers if there was a coaching change.

Over the last few years yes, but 10-15 years ago not so much. Waivers went from rarely granted to everyone gets a waiver over the course of a couple years. But regardless players leaving after a coach gets fired or leaves for a better job seems completely warranted IMO.

Then you have a guy like Durugordon who goes to Austin Peay, HC changes out and he has to sit out a year. For all we know he got brizzed.
Now needs to prove mental issue to play? Claim going back home to NY and Sienna should give him leniency?

now back to the NCAA waiver stuff where they have been proven to be consistently inconsistent which led to lawsuits piling up.

A kid can have bad luck with their coach getting fired or quitting multiple schools but they only get one free sit out

Also seems unfair in that the big schools keep head coaches for 20 years but mid/low majors get more HC changes. More HC churn at lower levels but transfer free year is same.

Maybe just let everyone transfer equally every year. How many more transfers would there be?

Yeah, I agree with that.
I guess with all the current coaching changes and 1st time no-sit rule, the NCAA is now trying to do whatever they can to keep some sort of continuity in the programs.
Even though this makes no sense to some of us, remember we are talking the NCAA.

Just let anybody transfer anytime
What difference does it make?
No waivers.
Not everyone is going to transfer anyway
Coaches can brizz players and make them sit out a year if they have already transferred once. But the coach can transfer as many times as he wants and no coach ever has to sit out a year.

I would think that IF it gets to the point where players are legally deemed to be employees ( like coaches) then complete freedom of movement will follow, like coaches have now.

Also I would think - IF that (players as employees) happens then, contracts will follow as well.

Coaches may not have to sit out a year, but many do have buy outs…so there are some penalties.

If the athletes become employees will they have a 4 year contract? What would the rules be around breaking it for each side? Such an unsettled time.

Yes,
They have buyouts and hit the jackpot! Maybe get 1-2 years pay and then quickly land another job. Didn't Cox, as bad as he was, get 2 years pay since he had been extended another year unbeknownst to the public? Then he quickly lands at Maryland. Not too shabby. And we sit here still reeling from his poor recruiting and poor talent development.

In Pro Sports there is free agency but only after player contracts expire so it helps to keep some semblance of roster continuity. NFL Draft an example. These guys sign but can't leave freely after just 1 year.

College Basketball is now paying with no contracts. 1800 in portal each year now. Could grow with the NIL competition. EBAY should create a player auction website.

Yes, there’s needs to be some structure around movement, like only allowing a 1 no sit transfer and sticking to it. But that may not be that much of a deterrent on subsequent transfers if the NIL money is right. I’ll sit and practice for a $100k+.

Interesting questions to chew on and speculate about as we enter the slow season, RIFan.

I wonder if contract buyouts for players would come about. I would guess that it would be a risky move for any program to autonomously institute player buyouts. I couldn’t imagine a program doing so without it being mandated for all programs somehow.

Can, would the NCAA mandate it? Would the P5 just flip the NCAA off in response?

You can write a contract however you want. And it would be legally binding. Give a kid a 2 year NIL contract, with a buyout clause if he transfers before the expiration.

I understand that part, TBR.

Beyond that, would a program write in buyout language if other programs weren’t doing the same ?

I would think that doing so would be very risky for a program if players have other NIL options with no buyouts involved. Not sure if I am explaining it correctly.

Thanks for the response.

I have another general question related to employee status for KB but I will go to the Understanding NIL thread to further avoid going off topic here.

No, I think you explained it pretty good. Most coaches hate this NIL and transfer rule. I think if schools gave NIL, schollies and a buyout clause for freshmen, things may settle down? Like you give a freshman a 3 year contract NIL, with full schollie. If he transfers before (with conditions of course) he has to pay a buyout. It might work, but what do I know.

Things like that work if it’s mandatory, or common practice or you are a big name team and have leverage. If it’s not common or mandatory I think most schools would have a hard time getting kids to sign a contract with a buyout. I could see that coming into play in a recruiting battle “and no buy out”.

Are you serious? Just let kids go to 4 different schools in their college career because one thing didn’t go right for them. I thought they were in school for an education? If this were true then they would be looking for the school that best fits their education and major. Most of these kids aren’t playing professionally anyway. Probably over 2000 transfers if there aren’t already that many.

The only structure that's going to fly now is total free agency. There is no going back. If you set a bar, or limit, there will be someone "infringed upon" or "restricted" and, as a society, we simply can't have that anymore anywhere...
Agree on siting and practicing. (Provided no defense required...I mean, for a measly hundred K, they're surely not expecting that...are they?)

Would've been nicer for us!

Would prefer him over a couple of the kids we've gotten.

For more insurance in the frontcourt, Jay Pal may be worth a look (1- year loaner)
He is 6'9" and in the Big South Championship game he scored 26 pts/ 10 rebs.
We aren't guaranteed Green will get a waiver.
Getting lots of interest including Rutgers, George Mason, Bonnies.

I confess to not having known that Campbell is the Fighting Camels but relatedly I am now a Campbell fan.

What are the rules for musical chairs?

Start the music and have the players walk clockwise in a circle around the chairs. Stop the music suddenly, and all players need to sit quickly in an empty chair. One person will be left standing without a chair, and they will be out of the game.

May 11 is next Thursday. It will be interesting to see who is left standing and who tries to grab the last seat at Rhody.

The portal only closes for players who chose to enter it and transfer.
If you are already in the portal, you can commit and sign with the team past May 11.
We are not restricted as to when we can add transfers this off-season.
