Man, this sucked to hear. I was one of the people who inherited Jim's desk at the Daily News - It was jokingly adorned with a sign that said something to the effect of, "Jim Gillis Hall of Fame - Admission $5." In hindsight, he should have just kept his desk, because he was ALWAYS there. Even after he stopped being a full-time reporter, he would still come in once or twice a week, almost always with some legitimate news tips and just to shoot the shit. And, he outlasted everyone he ever worked with at the Daily News. He was both a curmudgeon and one of the nicest guys in the business - he regularly served as a writing coach and mentor for reporters at the Cigar - and he was practically the embodiment of the "grizzled reporter" you'd see in a movie. His unique voice is going to be missed, on a personal and professional level for me.

I am very sorry to hear about this. He was one of the all time greats to talk Rhody hoops about on these message forums.

No he did post here. 997 posts just 3 short of 1000. His last post about 6 years ago. Very good contributors. Wonderful article about his career writing in Newport.

I worked with him briefly in 88.
What a wonderful man. I am so sorry for Julie.
Aquidneck Island, the Festivals, Rhody nation will all miss him greatly.

Wow -- I had no idea he was Rose. We were undergrads together at URI, he was in our wedding ... Wicked sense of humor that he would break out when you least expected it (or when you expected it, for that matter.) He came from nowhere with a wisecrack one day that caught me so hard whatever I was drinking shot out through my nose. For years I tried to return the favor; after another unsuccessful attempt, he would mimic me saying, "you know what your problem is? You don't drink enough liquids."

Didn't know Jim Was Ramblin Rose either. Makes sense now though. Always read his stuff in the Newport Daily News. Best regards to his family.
