Wow, that seems like a kind of bizarre decision, coming off a 20-12 year. He was an associate head coach at Villanova before taking the Quinnipiac job, according to his bio there. It's probably not a huge pay difference either way, though. He's married to the daughter of Villanova great Tom Ingelsby, so between that and his years as a coach there, probably some deep ties to the program in play.

Duke has something similar. I think more programs will follow suit. There now needs to be someone responsible for linkage between staff and Collectives. The money coming from the collectives, roster decisions from the coach, and someone in the middle making it all happen. The more the NcAA doesn’t put guardrails around it the more unwieldy it becomes and makes it impossible for a HC to lead while also trying to lead the program.

Is this actually a lot, though? Without doing any research I’d have guessed that all BCS football programs have a DC, an OC, a STC, and position group coaches for d-line, linebackers, DBs, o-line, QBs, RBs and receivers - which by my count is 10 right there and that’s before you even get to the semi-BS assistant positions (quality control, etc.), and it’s not counting the strength staff which are usually at least called “coaches”, and we’ve had recruiting coordinator type roles for a decade and I’m sure that’s only grown now that roster building has changed so much. If someone said a college football team had 30 coaches I wouldn’t be that surprised.

Not sure if Cox will get another opportunity to be the head guy anywhere, he’d probably have to take a pay cut if he wanted to try it in a small conference compared to what an associate head coach would make at a place like Maryland. But he’s undoubtedly a good and valuable guy on a staff. Happy for him.

Yeah there's things you can learn and things you can't.

I just don't think DC has it in him to be a lead guy.

He's an invaluable top assistant though - as top level coaches have constantly sought to keep him happy on their staff.

He's probably too nice to be in the #1 chair tbh. But he's a great balance for hardasses like Hurley and Willard - probably a great sounding board for a lot of kids, and probably helps calm those top guys down as well.

Cox is a smart guy so it's possible he learned lessons from being the head guy. Most notably: you can't let the inmates run the prison.

Cox is not the first assistant coach that failed when promoted to the Head Coaching chair nor will he be the last. But he is very good assistant coach and did a good job in that role here as well. And a great guy, happy for him.

Very true. And maybe if he came from the outside instead of getting promoted from within it might be an easier transition the next time.

But I think who Dave is - he cares a lot about his recruits and likes to be involved on the ground level with them in the process. i think that's what he likes most about the job. I don't think he could ever be a head guy and separate himself from that - but that's the clear distinction between being a head guy and being an assistant.

I'm not knocking him for it - he's great at what he does. Like I know myself - I've always taken jobs that maximize what I'm good at and like to do, and minimize the stuff outside of that. I think for Dave - making $400k+ per year doing what you love is a pretty solid living. Add on to that the $3-4+ mil he made here and I'm sure the Cox household is pretty happy.

I don't think it was crazy that St. Joe's moved on from Martelli, but Lange has been pretty uninspiring so far. Erik Reynolds is the real deal though, and Cam Brown is coming back for a fifth year, so I suppose you can make the argument that you "need" to extend him, and maybe have a legit shot at succeeding next year. I kind of wonder if it's just a two-year extension though, with the second year non-guaranteed.
