The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
The sheer amount of transfers in the portal we are involved with should be enough to tell you that not everyone is returning. Otherwise... wasting our time with the portal.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
If this team finished 2nd place with a 25-6 record and a 14-2 reg season conference record, like the women's team DID, you would say:
"EVERYONE IS RETURNING! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!"
Instead, this team finished DEAD LAST in overall record, and second to last in conference record only to a team that just showed up this year. You don't want everyone to return. Except for ish, you want as few people returning as humanly possible.
We lost:
Harris, never had him
Martin
Carey
Freeman
Hopefully to lose:
Samb
Alex
And we haven't received word on Ish yet. So, 6-7 openings.
I think Rory only stays because he and Jeremy may be a package deal, so he survives the cut.
Get rid of all the dead wood from this roster and lets go portal'ing

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
Honestly I'm not great at this stuff and other than Ish and Carey (if he chooses), it's a crap shoot. Here's who's currently listed to be on next years roster (taking from last years roster and adding the two recruits):
Samb
Thomas
Carey (if he chooses to stay)
Leggett
Foumena
Pierre
Stewart
Weston
Bilau
Tchikou
Hutchinson
Ball
Dubsky
Estevez
I have no crystal ball, but I feel Ish stays - I think if he was going to go, he would have left last year. Just a hunch with zero evidence behind it. I also think (love him or hate him) Thomas is here to stay unless they sign two stud pgs. At the very least you'll need him as a good backup. He does have value on the right team. If he performed better D and developed a good outside shot, he'd be a serviceable A10 pg. I'd like to see Carey stay (just keep the ball away from him during a press in crunch time). From there, I like Stewart, Weston, Bilau, and Tchikou. I don't know much about Hutchinson or Foumena, and since Ball and Pierre didn't play, I'm guessing they are walk ons. Looking forward to seeing the two in coming freshmen play. There isn't anyone on the current roster regardless of who stays and who doesn't that couldn't use at least some work to improve their game.
Let the skewering of my post begin.

Should come with a warning label.
His best bet for his own sake is to go cross-country, where his family can't follow him.

Put his name in here since we offered him out of HS

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
Needs the ball in his hands, low percentage volume scorer without making teammates better, poor defense. He would be at best a guy at the end of the bench you throw in to get some instant offense on a P6 team.
Drop a level and he will likely be dominant offensively.

You knew Bryant would be on there.
Could see Grasso being interested in Freeman and Carey.

Would be curious who contacted him on his first round of Portaling - when he signed with us. Anyone remember/have that list?

Feels like interest in him took a hit with this list of schools after another year of tape and the “incident”. Coaching fraternity is tight and that word gets around. No real coach wants a kids dad heckling him from the stands.

This is from an article in his recruiting thread

Freeman selected George Washington ahead of finalists Florida, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and league rival Massachusetts. He entered the portal in March and heard from the likes of Vanderbilt, Arizona State, DePaul, Cincinnati, Xavier, Northwestern and more. Freeman has three years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play immediately according to the one-time transfer exception adopted by both the NCAA and the league.

Can't find that, but out of HS before he landed with GW, he had offers from Florida, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss. Took an official visit to Ole Miss, too.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago Would be curious who contacted him on his first round of Portaling - when he signed with us. Anyone remember/have that list?

To answer your question about who recruited Bray it was Kenny Johnson. He played on his AAU team. Here’s a link. Phenomenal person to listen to and his stories are incredible.

He had a few nice moments for a bad team. He has a very involved twitter family member, who called out Ewing a few times about playing time. He might have been correct but something to maybe consider.

Well, it would be nice to have someone who knows how to finish a fast break for once...
Just saying.
NY Mr Basketball could be the classic case of take a step down and dominate.

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
I kind of view it as for a P6 program, well, why bother with the headache? At this time of year, still plenty of talented transfers that you can pursue that don't come with his baggage. Plenty of coaches will deal with bullcrap if its for a program changing player, but Freeman isn't that guy, except maybe at lower conferences. (Even then, I think it's more likely that he's an All-League player at somewhere like Delaware or Bryant or Bakersfield, not that his mere presence means 20+ wins.)

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
I didn't want to be the first to say it, ha... But absolutely. Samb in particular, I would have bet like a million dollars that his name would be in the portal on day one, given how much his playing time dropped as the year went on. I'm not sure on the logistics of graduate transfers, so maybe Carey doesn't need to "declare" or something, and can just enroll at a new school. But I was expecting a bit more roster churn than two to four (Freeman, Martin, not sure if Harris' status is reflected in our currently available scholarships, maybe Carey).

Re: The Men's Basketball Transfer Carousel 2023-24
you know I kind of hinted at it without realizing what I was hinting at then in the "Who's going to leave" thread, but now that I think about it more, while we could certainly use some upgrades (to be kind), there's something to be said for the stability of no one entering the portal (other than Freeman). Perhaps everyone wants to stay and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's no guarantee that the next replacement from the portal will be a stud and the two who came in that were thought to be a stud, one was only on offense and had some other issues and the other never showed. Maybe having the stability of folks staying every year will build us (perhaps slowly but surely) into the program we need to be.SGreenwell wrote: ↑1 year agoI didn't want to be the first to say it, ha... Yes, kinda stunned actually, the maybe no one wants to leave leaves me with meh……cause the ginormous improvements needed across the skill sets of those staying to move up in the A-10, somebody gotta go. Lots going into these kid’s decisions. Some will come soon, I hope.
