2023 Coaching Carousel
Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
Count me in the camp that no-way Cooley leaves for Georgetown.
Georgetown owes Ewing around $15M (possibly negotiate an $11M buyout).
They aren't writing Cooley a blank check to come, and doubtful he would regardless.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
Unless he’s solely motivated by money, Pitino in Lubbock, when he has other options, seems unlikely to me.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
I doubt Lubbock as well, but the more jobs Pitino gets linked to the better for negotiating.

Cost of living in DC is like twice what it is here. They don’t have a fancy practice facility, the fans don’t show up and the whole roster needs to be replaced. Oh, and the last three coaches have been fired. It would take a ton of money for any successful coach to consider that.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
Pitino isn’t going to Lubbock. That is his agent intentionally creating more interest to up his leverage.
Those dismissing Georgetown outright aren’t fully understanding the psyche of D1 cbb coaches. No one is worried about cost of living when they are making 4-5mm/year.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
For Cooley it will all come down to whether he wants to go through another rebuild. Dan had the stomach for it. Not sure if Ed does. If he does he’s gone. All these national guys aren’t talking about it for no reason.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
I know it’s been years, but Georgetown for me is all about Allen Iverson and Big John laying it all out to defend his players and being a strong presence and role model in a white coaching world. It’s also my husband’s favorite team, for all the Thompson reasons plus kid him having Ewing come to his Knicks, so it would be nice if they got back.
Cooley has handled the new transfer market as good as anyone, so I think a rebuild isn’t as big of a challenge as it was even five years ago. Coaching is a weird job, but the reasons people leave or stay are similar to a lot of people’s jobs when they are fortunate enough to have options. New challenges versus comfort and familiarity, compensation and resources, some ego and self-fulfillment.

Him leaving UD was the best thing to happen to Flyer fans. Opened the door to Archie and their greatest run in the modern era.

How he messaged that situation was beyond baffling to me. High school PR person could have given better counsel.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
There are multiple reports that Georgetown may pursue Cooley. As for my take:
I don't practice Santeria, I ain't got no crystal ball
There are however others much closer to the situation that apparently do and perhaps they know much more. Any candles being lit?

He’s their #1 target it’s not a doubt at this point. It’s only a matter of if he takes it.

I was bummed, but then I remembered...the guy after "The Guy" can't possibly live up to The Guy.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago Autry is an awful hire for Syracuse. That’s a marquee job and they could have anyone they want. First time HC who presided on the staff as the program got progressively worse. I’d be shocked if he’s successful.
You're looking for The Guy After the guy....hopefully it doesn't take too long to get through the guy after The Guy.
I mean, at least Rhody has already passed through the Phase 1 guy after The Guy....

Whole lot of ick on both sides here…
I don’t know enough about Providence’s overall resources to know if Cooley could use the Georgetown talk to make his situation better at PC.
I like Micah Shrewsberry for Georgetown, mainly because he seems like a really good coach and Penn State is trash.

But in this case, most felt that Cooley would be a top target.
He may use it as leverage for more $, but doubtful he is going anywhere.
He is already where he wants to be, unless of course a blueblood P5 (not BE) program comes calling with a ridiculous offer.

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
Let’s see what Gtown offers since he’s their # 1 target , if it’s north of 5 M could be hard for Ed to pass up for all the reasons mentioned above

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel
I think you are underestimating the ambition of cbb coaches. And applying too much logic. The longer it goes without a statement from Cooley-PC the more possible it becomes. I don’t think this is a posture for another renegotiation he Is very well paid at PC.Jersey77 wrote: ↑1 year agoActually, it goes "where there is smoke there is fire."RF1 wrote: ↑1 year agoI guess my cryptic post was perhaps a bit over your head.bigappleram wrote: ↑1 year ago

Right now the team is concentrating on Selection Sunday and he doesn't feel the necessity to make a statement to the media at this point.
Maybe because no concrete offer has been put forth yet.
Who knows, but still I don't see this happening.

Friartown Talk
Yuk
Edit:
Actually I’ll add to my snarky post…
Mods how ‘bout we create a separate Friartown thread so those of us who choose to ignore poster obsession with Friartown can ignore it like I ignore the Big East and uConn lovefest threads?

The coaching carousel is a disturbing ride lol. One season and he’s not a good fit, ridiculous. As for Cooley, I’d say it’s a 50/50 shot of heading down to GT.
