21-10 turnover difference. 6 by Toure, 4 for Magassa. That's the ballgame.

Win at home Saturday against a bad Dayton team and you clinch at least a share of the regular season championship

Because we're 1-1 against UMass this year - even though they beat us by 152 points at home?

Did anyone actually see how the women's game ended? I was at the men's game and following the score on my phone. As i was walking to my car, I was seeing URI up 72-71 with 2 seconds left and we somehow lost 74-73? I acknowledge my phone could have been wrong on time left.

Please don't tell me we made the second of 2 free throws to go up 2 with 2 seconds and they made a 3 at the buzzer? That's the only think i could think of that could have happened. And if that's the case...In that situation you have to intentionally miss the second free throw and the only way they can score is by heaving one from 3/4 court. Again...the time on my phone may have been wrong.

That is exactly how it happened. We were fouled up 1 with 2.3 to play. Missed first, made 2nd. St. Joe's hit a ridiculous off balanced 3 pointer with 3 defenders in her face for the win a the buzzer. (Remember St. Joe's was able to take a time out after the make and in the women's game you get the ball at half court).

You might be right. I can't fully remember. And maybe St. Joe's didn't have a time out. I did watch it live, but my memory is white hot garbage.

Fordham guard hit
an off balance 3 at the buzzer after we hit 1/2 free throws to go up 2. She was well guarded, just hit a prayer

Thanks Stevie...

Ok..If that's how it ended,it sucks, but much more understandable. If Fordham has a time out and can take it out at half court and there were 4 seconds left...you have to make the second free throw. Bummer!

We BEAT St. Joe's on a last second 3 by Sophie. WTF are we talking about here? Sounds like we lost to FORDHAM on a buzzer beater 3 when we were up by 2 tonight. Which is FUCKING CRAZY

I saw the whole game. URI is making far too many TOs, 22 for game, 15 in first half. My observation is that Tammi is desperately trying to get Magassa going following injury. Opponents are jamming our outside shooters forcing us to go inside to Toure who had a good scoring game but 7 TOs. If Magassa gets going it will free up our shooters. Our PG play with a transfer and freshman is below average.

This was not suppose to be as good of a team as last year. With so many transfers, cohesion is a problem with 11 players getting minutes. There is enough talent to do damage but the team needs to gel - take care of the ball and become more dominant inside. Tough lass.

are the three big games tonight in term of conference seeding. A win tonight at Fordham and a Saint Joseph's win tonight would put us in the driver's seat for the number 1 seed going into the last day of conference regular season play on Saturday
I'm not stressing it. I checked the bracket, the #2 seed actually looks like they have better game times, etc, than the #1 seed. so, either way...

Example: the #1 seed has to play both of their games at 11am in the morning, where the #2 seed gets to play at 5p and 1:30p.

Bracket:

A10 Women's Tourney Bracket Link
Completely disagree with the game times being better for the 2 seed. Game times are 11, 11, and 12 vs the 2 seed being 5, 1:30, 12. Maximum recovery time between games for the 1 seed

So here's the schedule of games that could matter for seeding Saturday with NET rankings from after yesterday's games:

#71 Rhode Island vs #211 Dayton at 1 on ESPN3
#97 Fordham at #148 Davidson at 1 on ESPN3
#90 Saint Joseph's vs #138 Duquesne at 2 on ESPN3
#150 Saint Louis at #270 Loyola Chicago at 2 on ESPN3
#60 UMass vs #146 George Washington at 4 on ESPN3

Number 1 or Number 2 seed at this point is secondary to how seeds #3-9 shake out. Since they are completely in flux until the final game of the regular season, we won't know if the #1 or #2 seed is getting the better deal in games they have to play in the quarter and semi finals to reach the finals.

We do know that URI will be either the #1 or #2 seed, which means they and UMass will only have to win two games to reach the finals, which is still huge. But seeds #3-9 will determine the matchups for those two games. some matchups are better than others.

Yup. There are a lot of teams that scare me (Joe's, Fordham, SLU)... Rhody won't be able to avoid them all before the finals. If they can avoid two of those three, though, they'll be in good shape. They're not gonna coast to Sunday - will have to beat at least one tough team.

Right now, if these standings translated directly to tournament seeds:

A10 Women's BB standings for 2/23/23

The number #1 seed, presumably UMass, would play their first game against the winner of Duquesne and George Mason.

Then their next game would likely be against the winner of George Washington and St Louis.

The number #2 seed, presumably URI, would play their first game likely against St. Joes.

Then their next game would be against the winner of Fordham and Richmond.

Based on this past week alone, that is a tough road for URI to the finals. I'd rather have the #1 seed in that case.

However, by the time all of the regular season games are played, these teams are likely to flip flop all over the place. Fordham does seem likely to maintain the #3 seed if they win, and the #2 seed will likely have to contend with them in the semi finals. That's a tough out for both URI and UMass, based on the results of this season. We say this may be the best URI Women's bb team in program history, but yesterday the Fordham announcers said the same thing about their team. I'm sure they have high hopes for this tournament.

I didn't have a problem accessing it on my tv last night (through my GoogleTV device). But I have in the past and had to reboot the device or perhaps use chrome cast to cast it from my phone. Do you have the espn app on your tv? It could have failed for many reasons.

I know it's tough to change the schedules at this point, especially with tv, but really the URI/Dayton and UMass/GW games should be played at the same time.

Thank you Steviep. I tried again the next day and had no problem going thru Cox. I have a new Sony TV that turns on as a Google TV. I don't know if it has an ESPN app to try directly. It is something I should try.

After 2 tough games on the road 1-win/1-loss, Rhody returns home to face Dayton on Saturday in the RC.
Dayton has won the last 2 games, currently 5-9.
Their leading scorer Bohanon has missed the last several games (12.6 pts)

Other players of note:
Perez- 12 pts/ 9.5 rebs
Freeman- 11 pts/ almost 5 assists
Smith- 10 pts/ 9 rebs
Jones- 9.6 pts/ 6 rebs.

Look for our Rams to bounce back with a win in the regular season finale.

I don't see that as the case for this team next season.

Also no drop-off in talent, might even be better.

Really like the 3 recruits that Tammi is bringing in.

11 players are getting meaningful minutes this year. The three loaners we are losing - Haddix-Covington, Squires and Lassiter - all started at various times this year. The keys for next season will be the development of PG Debroise, the return to form of Magassa as well as the development of several tall reserves. Contributions from first year players will be icing on the cake. My biggest concern for next season is our ability to reduce TOs.

Yeah, I was just going to say all 1-year loaners.
All 3 are Graduate Students. Haddix-Covington and Squires played 4 years at VCU and Richmond. They get a 5th year to play curtesy of Covid.
Lassiter sat out her 1st year due to knee injury at Florida State, played a year, sat out another year injured, played another year at FSU, transferred to Rutgers and played a year then transferred to URI as a Grad Student.

Covid giving a 5th year of eligibility enabled these extended careers as it also did last year for Chanell Williams PG who transferred in from PC as a Grad Student and Dez Elmore who transferred in from Seton Hall as a Grad Student.

Once the Free Extra Covid year deals expire then these transfers would not be possible. So it's not the new thing. This Covid deal will expire.

1 Year loaners
I don't see that as the case for this team next season.

Also no drop-off in talent, might even be better.

Really like the 3 recruits that Tammi is bringing in.
11 players are getting meaningful minutes this year. The three loaners we are losing - Haddix-Covington, Squires and Lassiter - all started at various times this year. The keys for next season will be the development of PG Debroise, the return to form of Magassa as well as the development of several tall reserves. Contributions from first year players will be icing on the cake. My biggest concern for next season is our ability to reduce TOs.
Don't really care for the term being used of "loaners"
  • Hattix-Covington, Lassiter and Squires are all Grad Students transfers in Tammi's Year 4
  • Channel Williams and Dez Elmore were Grad Students transfers in Tammi's Year 3
  • Johanna Muzet was a Grad student transfer in Tammi's Year 2
All 6 of these Grad Student Transfers were Starters from their 1st Game and stayed Starters throughout the Season

Covid gave 4 of the 6 a 5th season of eligibility. That Covid extra year deal will be expiring - not a permanent perk.

They get recognized on Senior Day as Graduate Students. Congrats 🎊🎈🍾

"Loaner" not really meant as a negative connotation.

Just a light-hearted remark referred to in sports for bringing in a short-term player for an immediate fix to fill a need.

Those 3 players will be honored, deservedly so, no one questioning that.

Actually, wouldn't mind if Archie does the same this off-season to help the younger players grow into their role and develop.

I'd disagree that bringing in 3 Grad Starter Transfers is even "to fill a need"
Ed Cooley does not necessarily bringing in Transfers to fill needs - more along the lines of getting the best possible team he can by all means possible.
Don't need to go all freshmen and plan only hit the long term. Use every Avenue at one's disposal.

Portapalooza!

I'd expect Tammi will bring in Transfers for 2023-24 as well.

Well, the 3 that she brought in all started, so that was an upgrade and probably filled a need.
They did more than just provide depth.

Like I said earlier, with all the quality players coming back, not sure that will be the case for 23-24.
Yeah some players may move on and she could bring in some transfers to fill the roster.

But as it stands now, even with those 3 moving on, we already have enough skilled players on the roster to contend for the A10 title again.

Yep
3 Grad Student transfers this year, 2 Grads last year and 1 the year before. All 6 started from Game 1 to end of season

Every team could be argued if the Grad Transfers filled needs or bolstered the starting line up. Chicken meet egg.

Gone from 1 to 2 to 3 Grad Transfer Starters in 3 past years under Tammi. Players see what she is building here and want to be part of it. I expect more Grad Transfers for next year. Portal announcement coming over next 2 months.

Ramster, I don't care for the term" loaner" either and probably should not have fallen into the trap of using this word. I used because it was the descriptor used in the post to which I was responding. It is not a descriptor that I have ever previously used. As URI fans, we are honored that they would choose us for Grad school and to complete their athletic eligibility.
