If there were only two games to go to I’d recommend attending St Joe and UMASS

If I could only go to one it would be St Joe on Feb 1

I would try to go to that Joes game, but I'm working that night. It's too short notice to get the time off for a hospital these days.

The one I'm going to book is Dayton, the last home game of the year. It basically has to be a Sat or Sun on a weekend my wife isn't working. There are a couple of others left on those days, but they are away games unfortunately. Next year, I'll find out all of the games we can attend preseason and book them all. It will be good for my son, he's on the spectrum and has ants in his pants, so it's hard to find venues where they are going to welcome him at this point in his life. I see kids about his age dancing in the aisles at these games on tv, so he should be ok.

Tonight 6pm ESPN+ Ryan Center
Last year at Richmond in February we won by 3
Emma Squires was amazing for Richmond against URI
10-11 FG, 7-8 3P for a game high 27 points
She simply couldn’t miss
Now this year she plays against her former team 11 months later

47-30 URI at 6:34 in 3rd quarter. They were up 10 at the half on a big run and have continued to pour it on against a good Richmond team. Really impressive performance.

Up 62-40 after three quarters against 105 NET Richmond. Our bench has been better than their starters. Just a straight up wagon

Yes, no one played over 24 minutes, 10 players scored.
Outrebounded them by 10 and 20 assists to 11 turnovers.
Very solid game against a decent team.

Another game that was close early and then we pulled away.
There's a drop-off after Toure inside.
Rinet had an off game.
Dolly is getting better every game back from injury.
Easy win against a decent team and we were not at our best.
Sophie's two treys in a row were daggers.

The Bonnies on Sunday should be one of our easiest road games.
They are currently 3-17 (0-5 A10) and on a 9-game losing streak.
They will probably finish at or close to the bottom of the conference.

Their best and biggest player is I'yanna Lops (6'3") averaging 11 pts/ 5.6 rebs.
She is the only player averaging double-digits.

I expect a fairly comfortable win here.

The Frosh, Ines Debroise, off the bench to dominate the 1st quarter. 8 points in 5 minutes. 3-3 from the field, 1-1 from behind the arc, 1-1 from the line to go along with a steal and an assist. Rhody up 23-9.

Better teams will take it to Maya hoping to get her in foul trouble. We need other bigs to get better. Maya needs to stop guarding aggressively to stay in games to rebound and score. She is the only player we can't do without against better opponents.

Komara is a good back-up for Torre, she doesn't have the mid-range game Torre has, but she's a good defender, gets good position on rebounds and is competent around the basket on offense. She would probably start for 75% of the teams in the A10.

I thought SBU attacked Komara with some success. To compete among NCAAT teams, I think we need better inside defenders.

If we run the table the rest of the way heading into the tournament, the NET ranking will take care of itself. If we make it to the finals, having run the table we will get into the tournament, even if we don't win it all.

As for Tenin Magassa, we will see her this year.

Next up is at GM on Wednesday, who is currently 3-4 A10.

They are led by guards Jameson (13.4 pts) and transfer Smith (10 pts) who was 3rd team All-NEC at Sacred Heart.
Upfront they have Kaysia averaging about 7 pts/7 rebs, and a was a volleyball transfer from Charlotte.

Again, this is another game we should win on the road.

Freshman Anaelle Dutat is who Tammi refers to as her Dennis Rodman type player. Anaelle rebounds and plays great defense. Tammi will sometimes put Anaelle on the opponent’s best player.
Anaelle is just a Freshman yet quietly and astonishingly:
  • 7th in the A10 in Offensive Rebounds per game
  • 17th in the A10 in Rebounds per game
  • 3rd on URI in steals
  • 4th on URI in minutes played
Add Komara who is also a freshman as we have talented depth at forward/center positions. These 2 freshmen keep getting better. Tenin Magassa will add to that depth when she is ready to return.

Pete,
On the mens board talk is often we need a 3-point shooter or two
Tammi has very deep 3 point shooting that she has recruited
The very unselfish play and very efficient passing helps the 3-point shooting accuracy.

3-Point Shooting is 7.5% better than opponents
  • URI 36.6% (163-445)
  • Opponents 29.1% (104-357)
URI is 18th in the Nation in 3-Point %
URI is 19th in the Nation with 8.6 3-Pointers per game
URI is 23rd in the Nation in Rebounding Margin with +8.5

Phillips 42-100=42%
Cairns 27-68=39%
Lassiter 26-70=37%
Rinat 22-60=36%
Debroise 11-30=36%
Hattix-Covington-Covington 18-59=30%
Squires 17-55=30%

That’s 7 players shooting between 30 and 100 attempts. All 7 30% and up. All 7 capable of getting very hot any game

Tammi has 4 players on the court most of the time who she trusts to shoot the 3-Pointer

That’s a significant difference from last years team

I was referring only to the SBU game when Toure was out.
I take Coach-speak with a grain of salt as it is oftentimes what she wants from a player or thinks the player is capable of being.
Dutat certainly has time to grow into a dominant inside player.
If Magassa returns this year and performs as she has in the past, this team could make it to the NCAAT and do damage.

True 72.
I would not read too much into which player is taking the mist 3Ps either because this team is so well coached and so unselfish.
In rebounding by Toure, Dutat, Komara and all guards the ball is often thrown back outside to be redistributed.
Last year when we lost our last 3 games of the season to Dayton, then St Joseph’s in A10 Tourney and then to Quinnipiac in the NIT teams focused on Dolly Cairns because she was our 3P threat. Now Tammi has 7 3P threats. URI passes at a dizzying pace around the perimeter and inside-out to the lane in search of the best possible 3P attempt.
Great passing can lead to great 3P shooting percentages. Poor passing teams lead to one on one dribbling and low percentage and sometimes forced 3P attempts.
We have the excellent, unselfish passing this season plus 7 proven 3P shooters.
Tammi gets it.

Pete,

I get what you're saying, but in fairness to the Men's team, Tammi is in year 4 of the rebuild. While she had some outstanding players the last couple of years, the talent top to bottom this year, blows last year away. It took some time for them to mesh, but by all indications, we have a legitimate chance to run the table and receive a bid. Archie will figure it out.

A couple of difficult travel days, but still no excuses. We should have dominated this game tonight and by all accounts, our first unit did. There will be nights like this but the goal is to get out of town with a win. Now they will have to work Magassa into the lineup.

Not pretty but a gutsy win on the road. These ladies know how to win even if it's ugly.

Can't play like this next week against St. Joe's if we want to keep the unbeaten A10 record.

Wins on the road are always tough. Credit for this team pulling this out tonight.

Madison Hattie-Covington was key tonight. Played 37 minutes, hit a huge 3 of 4 3-pointers and led the team with 15 points. She played 9 more minutes than the next closest player with 28 Minutes being Lassiter. Madison is playing better and better and Tammi is depending on her leadership by example.

Touré with another double-double with 11p, 11r plus 3 blocks. She fouled out playing just 26 minutes.

6-14 on 3Ps for 43% Compared to GMU 3-18 on 3Ps For 17%. 3 Point shooting proficiency continues as a key strength.

10 turnovers from our 2 PG’s Tonight is opportunity for improvement.

Can't control schedule but can control wins and losses. If our next loss comes at the A10 finals, we will be in. In ESPN Bracketology, they have two Ivy League teams in, Columbia and Penn when I last checked. I don't believe that will happen since Harvard and Princeton will win enough games to have that conference at parity. At this point, just sit back and enjoy the ride. And I do apprecite you updating the NET rankings.

Agree, sit back and enjoy the ride. I would not get caught up in all the At-Large bid stuff.

Consider what Tammi said back early in the season about last year.
Paraphrasing here, but last season they were focused on winning the A10 Conference and winning the A10 Tournament. Those were the goals. She said they were so driven by those goals that when we lost the huge Dayton game at URI the team was devastated. We then got upset by a freshmen loaded St Joseph’s team in the 1st round of the A10 Tournament and then lost to Quinnipiac at the Ryan Center in the NIT. She said the team was crushed by the Dayton loss.

Tammi said that this year there would not be that same goal pressure. She had learned from last year and saw what it did to the team with the Dayton loss. Tammi said this year they were going to have fun and enjoy the season. Still play hard, work hard but enjoy the ride.

Next game is St. Joe's at home on Wed, currently 15-6 (5-4 A10).
Last season they eliminated us in our 1st A10T game, so we owe them.

They are still a relatively young team and led by:
(F) Brugler- A10 ROY 2022, averaging almost 16 pts/ 5 rebs.
(G) Smith - All A10 Rookie Team 2022, averaging 14 pts/ 4 rebs.
(F) Ziegler - A freshman big averaging 11 pts/ 8 rebs.

St. Joe's should be a good test but expect us to win this game at home.
