Nooooooooooooo!!!!! Haha I had almost forgotten about that clown! If he becomes an NBA All-Star I might have to swear off the sport forever.
I have no problem with this as he could score and was a great offensive player. The fact that he was given DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR over Stan was an insult and a sham.

To rehash, that 17-18 campaign in conference:
Stan: 5.4 reb/2.0 stl/.5 blocks per game. 1.1 defensive win shares per game. 4.6 D Box +/- (which led the conference. Literally the stat that quantifies how much better you are defensively than the average player in conference)
Yuta: 5.8 rb/.8 stl/1.3 blocks per game. 0.6 defensive win share per game. 1.8 D Box +/- (16th in the A10).

Yuta played 200 more minutes than Stan did that season in conference and Stan had almost 3x the steals.

That was an absolute joke. I hate Yuta. I hate the A10. I'm happy Bray is going to light it up for us and let GW watch him torch the Colonials in Keaney Blue.

That from-out-of-nowhere block at the buzzer against Davidson all by itself was a more impactful defensive play than a whole season of Watanabe.

Cox certainly could get talent. However, he just couldn’t develop and coach them during an actual game.

Rhody72 would say that was good evidence to extend and keep Cox - that he could get talent. He'd be wrong, but he'd still say it.

Interesting about (C)Ousmane (6'10/230).
He decommitted once the twins decided to come here.

He is a major piece for a strong North Texas team.
Started every game last season for a team that went 16-2 in C-USA and averaged 10 pts/ 6 rebs and led in blocks.

Looking back would have preferred him to the Mitchells.

Ousmane is 52.4% FTs in his first two years. Mitchell’s got crushed here for their FT shooting as did Langevine.

If you took the time to look up their lines, you might as well include their competition, or lack thereof. Long played against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Ousmane played Southern Nazarene. Stephens played something called "Life Pacific" and finished 5-for-12, *all* attempts 3s. Toppin and Walker can play, so yeah, it would be nice to have them, but I'd be kind of surprised if the other three would be clear, starting level talent in the A-10.

And we played Quinnipiac. Our top 2 transfers had a combined 2 points.

I don't think we should lose to them regularly, but Quinnipiac at least puts up a fight most years. We've only played them 4 times, and we're 2-2, with the biggest spread being a 15-point URI win in the 2000s. They're probably going to be OK this year, at least moreso than whatever Maryland-Eastern Shore is.

Ousmane would be an immediate starter at center for us this season.
Also, probably for about half the teams in the A10.

North Texas is no slouch team, they won 25 games last season (16-2, C-USA).
He had 16 pts against Virginia in the 2nd round NIT.

He would have been fourth on the depth chart for us last year, and Samb would have been fifth. He's fine, but it's not like UConn whiffing on Ryan Gomes here. (And having said this, I fully expect him to drop 40 on us now...)

Ramster, just my guess.

I felt that once the twins committed here, Ousmane may have thought that Cox would prioritize them, and he would be buried on the bench.

Ousmane had committed here on a Friday, that following Monday the twins committed.
Within a few days after that Ousmane decommitted.

It turned out well for him, starting every game as a sophomore on a very good North Texas team and having a nice impact there.

Agree, a wise move by Ousmane, especially after seeing the disastrous 2 years for URI under Cox that Ousmane would have experienced.

I disagree with those who think Cox was a great recruiter. A huge part of Recruiting is being able to judge talent which includes physical ability, work ethic, basketball IQ, basketball emotional intelligence, upside potential, unselfishness. team player mentality, etc.

While posting the 1st game of the season results for 5 players, what about those who left and didn't do much?
Nate Brafford did not play in Georgia Southern's 15 point loss at San Jose State
Ileri Aya-Faleye did not play in Vermont's 1st game vs Brown. He played 8 minutes vs St Michael's and 13 minutes vs Middlebury in Exhibition games
Tres Berry played 12 minutes in a 31 point win by Charleston Southern over Tacoa Falls. He went scoreless, 3 steals, 4 assists.

Cox was often not a good judge of talent, work ethic, upside potential in recruits/transfers, etc.......... especially with big men as evidenced in the Twins and Jermaine Harris.

I wouldn't say Cox is a great recruiter, but not bad.
Otherwise, Willard at Maryland, Rice at Rutgers, or Hurley at URI wouldn't have hired him.
I think his present position is a perfect fit for him.

Cox just wasn't a good HC.

Name me the best 5 Recruits Cox brought in as Head Coach and his best 5 Transfers - in his 4 years at the Helm. Therein lies the problem - it caught up with him in a bad way in year 4 and we all continue to pay the price for his recruiting shortcomings.

Hurley landed the recruits at URI, not David Cox.

Hurley and Luke Murray worked relentlessly to identify, recruit and sign the best Recruits at URI. They are doing the same thing at UCONN. Cox was a bad judge of talent and not good at developing talent either.

Tres Berry
Speaking of Tres Berry, it looks like Cooley wants to redshirt his brother, Qante.

Obviously, if the HC is not successful, the players he brought in will have a difficult time developing, so can't really answer that. Our program under Cox was trending downward.

Jeff never would have come to URI if not for Cox.

He did identify and sign Toppin.
Ousmane probably would have been solid here.

Why do you think Willard after being successful at SH, hired Cox at a premier program like Maryland?
Probably not because of his X's and O's.

Hurley must have thought highly of him by promoting him to associate head coach.
Then endorsing him for HC.

Hurley loves to mention how many of his assistants end up as head coaches. He does have a decent track record and I'm sure it helps him recruit top assistants. He seemed to genuinely believe in Cox's head coach abilities I think more so than Cox believed in himself.
Dan Hurley 2012-2018:
Year 1: 8-21 3-13 T–14th
Year 2:14-18 5-11 10th
Year 3:23-10 13-5 T-2nd NIT 2nd RD
Year 4:17-15 9-9 7th
Year 5:25-10 13-5 T-3rd NCAA T
Year 6:26-8 15-3 1st NCAA T

Archie Miller 2022-?:
Year 1:9-22 5-13 14th

Cox is without a doubt an above average / great recruiter.

Now he can't coach those recruits, but he sure can get them.

Not every kid is going to be a hit, but more often than not Cox got legit players.

15,
Name me who you think Cox’ Top 5 Recruits, in order, landed from the time he took the HC Job - 4 years:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

And His Top 5 incoming transfers:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

I think he was a lousy recruiter with freshmen, worse with transfers and his retention was horrific.
Not based on stars or ranking, just who were his best in your eyes.

Cox called bad time outs, did bad coaching, did bad substitutions, let players do what they wanted all 4 years.

Those were constant

What changed and made the team worse every year until he got fired was that his recruiting prowess, or lack thereof, caught up with him. Once he had all his own recruited players then that, combined with his HC deficiencies, took the program to the bottom of the A10.

The talent on the team got progressively worse to where the team became a 10th, 11th A10 team that Led to his firing. It was so bad in his 4th year that it became obvious yo most all, still there were a few who did not think Thorr would pull the trigger- but he had to. No choice.

I don't have the time to dig into every player he brought here when he was an assistant, but the twins, Walker, Fatts, Toppin, and Tyrese all were/are very talented players.

Yes, the twins and Fatts were extremely tough to watch, but nobody could deny they were talented.

I would say average to above average coaches could have gotten more out of the twins and Fatts.

Cox is a fantastic recruiter as an assistant. However, I'd say he's an average recruiter as a head coach.

Toppin is a stud

I think Long is a very solid D1 player. He looked incredible in his first game this season

Tate had potential.

The twins were a big-time get at the time.

Landing Carey was as well. A lot of programs were going after him.

Betrand never had a chance here, but he would be one of the better players on our roster this year.

Antwan Walker is a good player.

Shep was a nice pickup. VCU wanted him badly.

EA was a solid get

Malik was our best player the other night. Solid A10 get.

These players didn't lack talent. They lacked coaching. So we got the worst versions of them.

Recruiting a kid to play for Hurley and recruiting a kid to play for yourself is a big difference. In most cases, the reason a kid comes to a school is the head coach.

The special treatment given to Fatts, Harris and the twins doomed Cox at URI.

See, it's not hard to make logical and correct posts. Why can't you do this more often?

I know St. Mary's is good but what an ugly game for North Texas.

They only scored 12 pts in the first half, that is embarrassing.

Jefe notching 15 minutes in last night's Raptors win over the Pistons. 4 points. 4 boards. 1 block. 2 assists.

Proof that hard work and patience pays off. Keep rolling!

Temple/URI at the Providence Civic Center: wasn't it 8 points for URI at the half?
Did Randy Bennett visit the N Texas locker room after the game?

Stevey, do you think Toppin is a lock to have an NBA career? Regular playing time NBA type career? Curious as to what you think because I am not so sure anymore.

I’ve watched him play last season and early this season and I think he measures up athletically but I am not sure about his bb skills - primarily, shooting, ball handling, passing - are near NBA caliber right now. However, he may have NBA caliber defensive ability.

He does have potential and has the athleticism to make eye popping plays periodically but I don’t know. I expected he would be more polished offensively by now.
