A10 to add men's lacrosse

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

I put this in the other college sports category because currently our men's lacrosse team is a club team, but all indications are that the Atlantic 10 will add men's lacrosse to the list of sports it sponsors, though the conference hasn't made an official announcement yet. Current A10 schools that play division 1 lacrosse and their current conferences:

#26 UMass in the Colonial
#13 Richmond in the Southern
#40 St. Bonaventure in the MAAC
#16 St. Joseph's in the Northeast

The Northeast conference announced yesterday they will no longer sponsor the sport.

You need six teams to be able to get an auto qualifier into the tournament, so apparently the A10 is looking at #38 Hobart, #32 High Point, and/or #51 Fairfield as associate members to get an automatic qualifier.

Currently there are 73 teams that play division 1 men's lacrosse. St. Joe's and Richmond made this year's lacrosse tournament (18 teams make it) and will be playing Saturday

It's a growing sport in the U.S., so hey, why not? Seems fine to me.

I assume none. I don't think Title IX is concerned with how many men's sports a conference offers, the concern only comes if individual schools add the sport and how their scholarships are affected by adding

There are 15 New England Schools with D1 Men's Lacrosse. Included is their NCAA Ranking from among 73 Total D1 Teams:
6-Yale
10-Brown
12-Boston University
15-Harvard
26-UMASS
33-Dartmouth
35-Vermont
36-Bryant
46-PC
51-Fairfield
54-Merrimack
65-Quinnipiac
69-Sacred Heart
70-Holy Cross
72-UMASS-Lowell

A10 Teams with D1 Lacrosse playing in other Conferences:

13-Richmond - Southern Conference
16-St Joseph's - NEC
26-UMASS - CAA
40-St Bonaventure - MAAC

Why wouldn't URI have D1 Man's Lacrosse with so many nearly New England Schools having D1 Programs? Seems logical to add Men's Lacrosse after announcing Women's D1 Lacrosse for 2024-25 Season.

One reason for for not having either - MONEY $$$

URI already can't adequately provide enough financial support to many of its existing programs. Adding two men's programs would also necessitate adding more female programs for Title IX.

Why would we add lacrosse before hockey? Hockey is far more logical

RF is right. Look how competitive most of the sports are. Imagine where they could be with a budget of say $35M,instead of $25M.
$25M is the bare minimum for D1 competition. Delaware is $50M.

At some point a booster will step up and fund both URI men’s and women’s hockey

Sadly the powerhouse teams of the mid 2000’s were the ones to promote. How much is left in Augustine’s tank?

Both programs would be immediately welcome in multiple conferences.

Assume we’d also have to add both men’s and women’s lacrosse simultaneously due to Title IX constraints?

We're already adding women's lacrosse. I think spring 2025 is their first season

it's not a dig on Auggie or the woman's program but the current coaching staffs would not be coaching URI if they went D1.
