Where its headed? Coaches leaving for more money is like the one constant of college basketball.
So Greenwell, you don’t think it’s odd for a guy to sign an extension On April 5th, AFTER the season is over, and interviews for another job? Really? You think that’s normal?
How does the Bryant AD feel? How does the Bryant president feel? how do the Bryant alumni feel? Bryant Students?

Less than a month after signing an extension, raving about how he loves Bryant, it’s AD, it’s new conference, it’s new arena announcement, his new transfers into his program.

For interviewing Fordham?

57 D1 Head Coach positions changed hands this year, and counting out of 350. Huge number based on the past.

https://www.cbssports.com/college
basketball/news/college-basketball-coaching-changes-2022-tracker-carousel-jay-wright-retirement-adds-to-huge-year-of-change/amp/

Now not just Coaches going for the money but players, no sit-out year required anymore, players transferring in droves almost up to 1500 this year in D1 Only portal, players comparing NIL opportunities among schools.

If you really believe there’s loyalty in sports, I don’t know what to tell ya.

For YEARS, coaching have been saying one thing, then leaving for a better job within the next week.

It’s not “where college basketball is headed” like you said.

It’s always been that way.

If only we had a painful example in our past history of coaches, where one of them left for more money at a bigger school in the dead of night, essentially, and a few days after it seemed like he was sticking around. But surely, that's never happened to us.

Yeah, like it’s always been this way, nothing changing, Harrick example means it’s always been like it is today. Ok.

Keep your head in the sand while fans continue to drift away from what has always been my favorite sport.

It’s not always been this way.
Players were not paid, they received scholarships.
Players had to sit out a year before being eligible.
Players typically stayed at a school for 4 years
Senior night was a wonderful event where we showed our appreciation for 4 years of commitment and watched played grow, improve, develop and go out into the world representing their College or University.

No more building rosters to build a future on. No foundation.

Now you need a scorecard to know the players, not just the freshmen but 50 to 75 percent of the roster.

Where college basketball is headed is like football. FBS with the Cartel and all the rest as FCS.

There will be Universities who will join together and not participate in this arms race. Not all schools will want to enter bidding wars for players every year.

Not what I said at all .

Fans are getting screwed in the long run. Coach and roster turnover is decreasing fan interest.

Pay the players all you want. But going to the fishers bidder is causing massive roster turnover and interest is waning.

Who was the last head coach to leave Fordham for another head-coaching job? Was it Nick Macarchuk?

Didn't Macarchuk get fired and move onto Stony Brook?

If the question is who left as the Fordham coach for greener pastures. My guess is Tom Penders. Yeah Rhody!!!)

IIRC, Macarchuk jumped before he was pushed. He left to start Stony Brook's Division 1 program.

How many head coaches has Fordham had since?

This was a nice write up by Native 7 years ago in Keaney Blue on Fordham Head Coaches since they joined the A10. Macarchuk was HC of Fordham from 1987 to 1999. Fordham joined the A10 in 1995 moving from the Patriot League. Native comments on all of the Fordham HC in the A10 up until 7 years ago when the article was written.

Nick Macarchuk

Nick Macarchuk started his college coaching career in 1972 as an assistant coach on Dave Gavitt's staff at Providence College.

Following the 1977 season, Macarchuk left Providence to take over as head coach for a struggling Canisius program. Macarchuk compiled a 149-128 record in 10 seasons at Canisius.

In 1987, Nick Macarchuk left Canisius to take over a Fordham program that had just suffered its first back-to-back losing seasons in 10 years. In Macarchuk's first season at Rose Hill, Fordham went 18-15, making the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament finals and qualifying for the NIT. Fordham's success in the MAAC continued in the upcoming years as Fordham again went to the NIT in 1990.

In 1991, Fordham joined the non-scholarship Patriot League, won the inaugural Patriot League Championship, and advanced to the second round of the NIT.

In 1992, the Rams repeated as Patriot League champs and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1970-71 (it was also the first time in Macarchuk's career that one of his teams qualified for the NCAA tournament).

In 1995, Fordham switched conferences yet again, this time from the Patriot League to the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Fordham struggled in the A-10 from day 1. Macarchuk led the Fordham Rams to a 12-15 record in 1998-99, which was Macarchuk's final season at Fordham, and which represented at that point in time Fordham's best mark since making the jump to the Atlantic-10.

In 1999 Macarchuk left Fordham to take over at Stony Brook as Stony Brook prepared to enter its first season of Division I competition. Macarchuk guided the Stony Brook program through its transition as an independent to its current membership in the America East conference.

Macarchuk retired as the Stony Brook head coach at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season.

It was interesting that the media names did not turn out to include the final selection.
  • Ivan Thomas
  • Bruiser Flint
  • Brandin Knight
  • Jared Grasso
I like the idea of hiring a young assistant that was selected by Kyle Neptune from a season Fordham had good success compared to prior years. Why not go with a good assistant coach.

Fordham finished in 8th place in the A10 going 8-10 conference and 16-16 overall.
Fordham beat George Mason in the 2nd round, then lost to #1 seed Davidson in the Quarterfinals.

That was a huge improvement over the previous season when Fordham finished last in the A10 going 2-11 conference and 2-12 overall in the C-19 impacted season

The year before that (2019-2020) Fordham finished 13th going 2-16 conference and 6-26 overall.

PC didn't seem to have an issue with fan interest. And that was a team that had 1 guy who had been there for 4 years (Watson).
Al Durham a 1 year rental was one of the most beloved players on the team.
The sky is not falling. Some of the NIL and transfer stuff needs to be regulated a bit as now its just open season but the game will continue to evolve and fans will continue showing up if you win games and play meaningful games.

No doubt that this was primarily due to “protecting” his recruits and existing roster from leaving.

If they felt he was the best candidate, fine, but if is for roster protection , it is a very short term thought process.

At least that’s why everyone here said when Hurley’s coaches were getting poached.

Yes and no. Ideally you'd want teams to want your coaches and be able to keep them. That said as long as you can keep a solid amount you should be able to keep things rolling

In this day and age, tough to take a significant pay decrease.

It's not like a position under Hurley is something to scoff at, either.

Perhaps, but it doesn't seem like he's on the radar for an assistant job at an A10 school or higher. Unfortunately sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward and I would say taking a position on Hurley's staff, both financially and experience wise, could be a better move than taking an assistant job at a lower level program

Even the reasoning was dumb. "You're probably going to think it's silly ranking him this high, but look at all the talent he landed." Half the talent was already committed there and most people on this board could pull in similar talent for Duke, let alone your average college basketball coach

Richmond won the A10 Tournament last year, then beat 5-seed Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Extending Mooney makes sense based on last year’s performance.

Entering CFL territory. Next stop, embaronsing?
Richmond won the A10 Tournament last year, then beat 5-seed Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Extending Mooney makes sense based on last year’s performance.

Baron never sniffed an NCAA Tournament Invitation
It took him 11 years to get into the Tournament.

Also Ramster in 2019-2020 they finished 2nd in the A10 and would have gotten an NCAAT bid had it not been for Covid. Mooney absolutely deserves an extension.

And it’s not a Jim Baron 10-year Coach for Life Deal - it’s only out a few years.

Baron never won the A10, never got to the NCAA Tournament but got a CFL contract.
