Another "meh" tourney.

Two P5 middle-to-bottom of the pack teams.

Ugh dear God please get us a big name coach who will make us relevant again.

Tournament started in 2017
2017: Richmond, Cincinnati, Iowa, UAB, Louisiana-Lafayette, Buffalo, Wyoming, South Dakota State

2018: St Bonaventure, Clemson, Georgia, Creighton, Boise State, Georgia State, Illinois State, Akron

2019: George Mason, Loyola Chicago, Nebraska, Washington State, New Mexico State, Old Dominion, South Florida, Colorado State

2020 and 2021 cancelled due to _ _ _ _ _

2022: URI, LSU, Tulane, Kansas State, Western Kentucky, Akron, Illinois State, Nevada

Good place to spend this year’s 3rd week of November. Each year a A10 Team invited.

Granted this won't be a premier tournament but definitely a step up from Daytona.

LSU has beaten 2 top 20 teams and a mid-pack SEC team.
K-State is struggling in the B12
Western Kentucky usually a decent team.
Akron a top MAC team with a very good coach.

In addition, next season we also play PC and at SH.

Also, at Georgia State won't be easy.
Now fully healthy they have won 9 of their last 10 games.

Blue Man remember next year will probably be a total rebuild for us and coming off 2 bad seasons.
What more would you expect in a schedule, it won't be pretty for us?

Georgia State has won 7 straight, 9 of last 10 as you say. They got hit hard with injuries an Covid. Good bet to win the AQ

I like the tournament in that it's 8 teams. Not the two 4 team divisions where you play in different groups like in Dayton and some other tournaments.

Good location too!! No complaints from me. Best we were going to get imho, even better than I expected.

How can Rhody fans complain when URI will likely be one of the worst teams in this tournament's field next season?

Will the Yanks hold on and qualify?

Caymans could be a great pre-turkey day place to hang for a few days and watch hoops and soccer.

Agree with you guys, given the current state of our program, actually not a bad field to be a part of. Not overly exciting or anything, but its a decent group of teams.

I have flippantly renamed this. :) I figure it makes sense to keep this a separate thread, because if some people actually do want to travel down there, this can serve as a decent "meeting up" and advice thread as well. That would happen in the past, for things like the A-10 tournament.

Travel To The Cayman Classic

Unread post by Blue Man »

Since we've turned the page, let's talk travel! Packages are up.

https://caymanislandsclassictravel.com/ ... de-island/

Mrs. Blue and I got gypped out of a 5 year anniversary trip last year, so Thanksgiving week in the tropics with Rhody is a suitable replacement.

Who's going??

Do the hard sell in month one or two. After a couple weeks of having the baby home, most new parents are happy for anyone to hold it and watch it for a couple of minutes, and more open to the idea of taking a vacation for a week. ;)

in all seriousness, the wife and I went to 7 mile beach about 7 or 8 years ago and it was beautiful. The restaurants were fantastic. The restaurant at the Ritz was easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, and that includes some of the Michelin star rated ones. We stayed "cheap" at the time and went to Sunshine Suites. I can't say enough good things about this affordable place. it wasn't right on the beach, you have to cross the street, but the taco restaurant there was really really good. The island could be real expensive and if you are like me and would rather spend the money on nice dinners, I really recommend Sunshine Suites to stay. Just don't sell it out in the off chance that my wife is crazy enough to allow this trip to occur.

Little Red was three months old when we took our first vacation without her. Nana and Grandpa were thrilled to have her for a week.

I tried talking to the alumni association, but they don't have any information yet.
Not sure about the hotels or if they also do an all-inclusive resort.

I was down there in 2015 and stayed at the Grand Cayman Marriot Beach Resort and it was wonderful.

Looks like they already do Rambone. My experience is you have to go thru the tournament. Could also buy the tickets only and make own flight and hotel plans. These are usually lightly attended due to cost, travel and timing during Thanksgiving week.

I'm honestly leaning toward booking the hotel myself and getting tickets through URI.

Huge gap in pricing and the room block is facing the courtyard, upcharge for the ocean view. If the wife and I are bailing on family Thanksgiving to go to the Caribbean (though not uncommon for us with URI basketball plans), I will be waking up next to the ocean.

I will also look into possibly booking the room separately.

Ummmm - if you're planning on going and staying in the team hotel I would book now.

They're running some special for Bonvoy members where it's like 30% off. Just booked and no joke the hotel was about $3500 cheaper than the tournament quoted me.

Agreed. Did the rental car thing, and even with tickets (which I'm assuming I can get through URI), that's $250 each. I'm still looking at almost $3k cheaper than what the tourney would cost through them. I am really wondering what else the package is giving you for that much. Am I missing something?

I'm sure there's some perks, but not nearly $3K worth of stuff.

Last November we were invited to a destination wedding at a resort outside of Cancun. The couple was using a wedding planner service and through them we were required to book 3 nights minimum. I went to the resorts web site and was able to book any # of nights (we chose 2) for significantly less cost. Unfortunately COVID forced the wedding to be cancelled so I can't tell what advantages booking thru their wedding folks would have given us. Perhaps better rooms or extra stuff, but I can't imagine it would be worth the extra cost.

WOW!

Oh I even went back and forth and requested pricing for an ocean-facing room (team/tournament block has a courtyard view), and that's what I'm pricing against. I know they cover the ground transportation, you get some tourney swag, and there's some private functions - but $3K worth? Idk tough sell.

You’re slipping my guy. I admire your commitment to trolling your rivals message board in the off-season though.

That’s a level of sad I never aspire to, but hats off.
