Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Not sure others here will agree, but I think Bruce Weber would work out here nicely.

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Look Weber is a good coach, but he is also a Midwestern guy and spent his whole career out there.
He will also be 66 when the season starts.
I just don't see him as being a fit here.

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Valid. I'm thinking he might have just enough time to stabilize the program, make us respectable again, and then hand over the program to someone in 5 years or so.

My odds for head coach next season:
1. Cox (50%)
2. Some guy we have never really heard of who is a head coach, coaching at low level D1 (40%)
3. Assistant coach somewhere, likely with ties to DH (9%)
4. Home Run Hire - Miller, Mack, Crean (1%)

Weird to put 50% odds on Cox when he was fired 5 min before your post.

Wow - I am pleasantly surprised. Need to amend the odds I guess.

An example of how out of touch the casual fan is, on Twitter I've seen Lamar's name a few times, TJ Buchanan (great Ram but how can anyone mention that with an inkling of knowledge), Tyson Wheeler and to a couple Jared Grasso would be a home run hire, IF URI could get him.

From Jeff Borzello:
Friday, 10:15 a.m.: Rhode Island made the expected move of parting ways with David Cox on Friday morning and now another attractive New England job is on the market. While there were some Archie Miller whispers a couple of weeks ago, two names expected to be in the mix for the Rams are Vermont's John Becker and Bryant's Jared Grasso. Becker has had a tremendous amount of success with the Catamounts, while Grasso guided Bryant to the NCAA tournament this season and has a strong reputation as a recruiter.

If we go through all this and just end up with Becker, Grasso or Skerry it's going to be a bit of a letdown.

Unless it’s Archie Miller, it’s likely the next head coach is still playing. So it’ll be at least a couple of weeks.

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Hurley was hired on March 22, after Baron was fired on March 4. Cox was hired on April 4, after Hurley left on March 22. So, that's roughly two to three weeks, although I think in both cases there were leaks / whispers that they were the strong contenders for the job.LoveThoseRams wrote: ↑2 years ago How long before the new coach is announced?

Let's not forget this is a "State" job, so they have to legally post the job and take interviews for I think a month before they can officially hire anyone.LoveThoseRams wrote: ↑2 years ago How long before the new coach is announced?

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Why does everyone love Grasso so much? Bryant is 202 in NET. 0-4 in Quad 1 & 2 games and 3-2 in Quad 3 teams. They beat the worst of the worst.
They lost 111-44 to Houston. If you take the amount of points Houston won by and used that as their score, they still win by 23, 67-44...

Ha, these lists are all over the place - KMac's doesn't even have Becker, Grasso or Skerry on it. Brusier Flint is a name I haven't thought of in about a decade. I have no clue if any of these guys are more plugged in than the others.
ETA - Oops, he did have Grasso on his list! Thanks to Rhody15 and Giovanni for bringing that to my attention.

The more and I think about Grasso, the more I like it.
Young, hungry, a mad man (which can be good and bad) and works his ass off.
He got better players than he should’ve at Bryant, with 3 of his kids easily Being able to play in the A10 (Kiss, Pride Elias)
We don’t want someone who hasn’t/can’t recruit in the A10, but Grasso has 3 A10 type talents, which equals to him potentially being able to recruit players above the A10 talent wise.

Unfortunately that is what all the supposed sports media members do these days when it comes to coaching openings. I am left to assume the Newhouse School at SU has pretty poor journalism teaching standards where rumor mongering is quite acceptable.KingstonLane wrote: ↑2 years ago Kmac is clueless. Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
When we hired Hurley the news broke on March 16th. Baron was let go on March 4th, for context. So that one took under two weeks. Considering it took them less than 12 hours after the season ended to make the announcement on Cox, I’m interpreting that as they are going to move expeditiously here. If they have identified who they want and can come to terms with him, I doubt they will wait. The state hiring process formalities can be dealt with after the fact.RamIt! wrote: ↑2 years agoLet's not forget this is a "State" job, so they have to legally post the job and take interviews for I think a month before they can officially hire anyone.LoveThoseRams wrote: ↑2 years ago How long before the new coach is announced?

He got a vote of confidence, but I believe that was before the Stanford game. There's speculation that he could still be out, if pressure grows on the AD to make a move.RI_Bred wrote: ↑2 years agoHurley was retained at AZ. St., correct? Bruiser Flint? I had to Google to see where he was. Looks like a Jim Baron kind of hire.

I know this has been mentioned before, but I really don't think it can be overstated how big of a hire this will end up being. We're about to get a pretty clear indication just how much the administration and donors are willing to invest to make us a consistent tournament contender.

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
Compensation will determine how good a coach we can get. If the big donors are on board maybe we can get an Archie Miller.

Many of the names being bandied about by the media have no real credibility and are no better than what many posters here are flinging out. I would not get too worked up this early in the process about names being publicly mentioned by so called journalists. They are for the most part just guesses and conjecture.

On a positive note the national media are all portraying it as an attractive job. They definitely don’t read some of the posts on this board.

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
With the expediency of the announcement of determination I would think Thor has been working behind the scenes on this for some time and has one or two guys in mind that he is targeting, much like when he hired Danny. With that being said I'm sure there is always the possibility of a name that is unexpected for whatever reason to perhaps put his name in the mix

Re: Head coach speculation for 2022-23
There’s plenty of reasons why Hurley could be making a move on his own. Just because an AD says he’s keeping a guy doesn’t mean that guy wants to be there.RI_Bred wrote: ↑2 years agoHurley was retained at AZ. St., correct? Dark horse candidate: Brett Campbell of St. Charles High School in Waldorf, MD. He is a URI alum, and has built a powerhouse at a new-build public school in short order. Would likely only command around 1m/year.
