Are you thinking that he would transfer to one of those 5 schools? You don't go from redshirting in the A-10 to playing at an SEC school...

Redshirting on a 10th place A10 school

Means they could reunite in Rhode Island. Tres at URI, his brother playing for the CFL HC who was afraid to play URI, then went 13-13 and lost to 11-seed BE perennial bottom dweller DePaul in game 1 of the BE Tourney.

Speculation is Quante committed to PC on his visit which could be what they are talking about.

No official word yet - but videos were on social media of Cooley doing his signature pool dive, with the comment before the dive of "I'm very excited with Q. These commitments I go in the water."

Hard to tell what’s the hold up on a formal announcement unless he wanted something more formal or the quote was misinterpreted.

That make sense. I am surprised. Guessing some of the other Top 5 didn’t guarantee him a spot then. Tennessee would be his #1 chance by far to play with AAU teammate Brian Edwards.

Harris getting his teenage girl on all over IG.

Good luck wherever he goes. Hopefully he finds a higher ceiling than he was able to find here.

As been speculated on this board about a possible departure of Harris, players have until tomorrow 7/1 to enter the portal and qualify for the no sit rule. After that, they will have to go through the waiver process in order to qualify for immediate eligibility if they transfer.

So time is running out and we have seen a huge slowdown of players entering the portal.

At this point I am satisfied with our current roster going into the season.

I sincerely doubt he was a "serious problem" - he seemed to be well-liked by teammates, and there isn't any indication that he was a problem child from an academic or chemistry standpoint. I think it's important to make a distinction between guys who didn't live up to their initial recruiting hype because of injuries or a scouting misevaluation, vs. guys who didn't live up to the hype because of their own actions. I think Harris is more in the first category than the second, which would be more of the Dana Tate, Jonathan Holton and Zach Marbury types.

I never understood the intense hate Jermaine received here. Well, I "understood" it - people were very disappointed he didn't live up to his recruiting hype. That said, it really went overboard IMO.

Good luck Jermaine - I was pumped when he came here, unfortunate that injuries happened and he stagnated in his development.

I wish him well and hope his injury issues are behind him.

We now have 2 spots open with both loses being in the frontcourt.
Also considering that Mikhi is coming back from knee surgery, I wouldn't mind them adding another big.
We would be very thin in the paint if the injury bug hits again.

I don’t think he meant problem in the locker room, more liability on the court.

Seemed like a good kid who saw way too much playing time when it was clear there were better options who deserved those minutes based on his play.

Poor eval or not, he was the 3rd highest rated recruit since 98. Odom, Terrell, harris. Usually when you’re that high a player would at least be serviceable at the A10 level.

Sucks he didn’t pan out because we could’ve used his projected abilities. I’ll wish him well wherever he goes, and hope that he can make some type of comeback at a lower level.

Don't forget Abdou Samb!

Gonna be hard to get anybody else to join the frontcourt since there's not a lot of playing time behind the twins and Walker.

Makhi's injury is not a big deal. He's long recovered.

I always liked Samb as a recruit and Ileri has the athleticism, but they are untested at this level.

I wouldn't mind them getting another big body, with some experience that can contribute.

Perfect example of a player who needs a new environment. I’m content with the Mitchell twins and Walker starting, Martin switching on the wings and the freshmen working their way into the lineup.

As I look at the roster construction now versus under Hurley it's completely different and it's not for the better. With Hurley, you could see a core group coming together that was eventually supplemented with key transfers and role playing freshmen and sophomores.

With the 2018 and 2019 URI recruiting cycles now all gone, this current roster under Cox feels more like a disjointed accumulation of athletes rather than a core group that is building towards something. As an NBA fan, it feels like we're turning into the Orlando Magic of the A10, just accumulating raw athletes year after year without any regard for roster construction or basketball fundamentals. Cox also has shown an inability to develop this raw talent as well.

The fact Hurley turned Andre Berry into a serviceable A10 big man and Harris regressed under Cox is so effing damning.

I’m 50/50 on it. Jermaine is a great player on your team if he’s your 4th best big and not counted on for anything more than eating minutes while Mitchell twins and/or walker are in foul trouble. Also doesn’t hurt for longer term injury depth

That being said with walker and Harris (prior to the transfer) being set to graduate they probably wanted to get samb some minutes to develop. There was legitimately none to be had if Harris stayed

We keep talking about development or lack thereof, when the past two seasons, a wet behind the ears coach was hit with some of the most dramatic landscape shifts in the history of the NCAA. Its difficult to pivot in unfamiliar territory. Sure, they are excuses, but they are FACTS. Does Cox need to improve, YES! But, there are level headed individuals that actually know and understand, rather than the things the posters of this board purely speculate about, deem it fact, and run with it. Sure, that’s the nature of Internet message boards, but it doesn’t change the FACT that, kids lost almost an entire season to workout and find some sort of cohesion prior to the COVID season. The guy has a steep hill to climb, and to establish and develop CULTURE, there has to be some type of foundational framework…and that’s not an instant thing, it’s something that finding an identity, and ultimately WINNING will cure. The dude knows he has to win…we know that as well, and every year he doesn’t, the leash gets shorter and shorter. Only Thorr knows the length of said leash….

Cox, IMO, has 2-3 years to prove me right or wrong, but, I know, I know, I’m whatever you guys say I am….despite any real facts other than coincidence.

Fair, but I pretty much disagree across the board. Covid and transfer excuses hold no weight to me, since every program is/was dealing with both to varying degrees. In terms of Cox being wet behind the ears, it sounds like you are making the case that URI should have hired someone with more experience that would have been better equipped to handle the prosperity left behind by Hurley.

In terms of a timeline, this is a make or break year for Cox in my opinion. If we miss the tournament this year (which I think we will), Cox will be 0-4 and have lost the entirety of his first two recruiting classes at URI. Those first two year classes are incredibly important for establishing a culture as a new HC, especially an inexperienced coach. Those 2018-19 recruiting classes should be coming into their own this year and next and leading the next round of URI tournament bids.

The bottom line is Cox has squandered any momentum left from the back to back tournament runs, has made poor assistant coaching hires and has nothing to show for his first two recruiting cycles at URI. I also think Cox attached himself too much to Fatts/Harris, which did not work out. As a URI fan, I want Cox to succeed, but as time goes on, I'm becoming more and more pessimistic about the direction of URI basketball under David Cox.

Is having yet another thread of "Cox's coaching" on this board really necessary? This has been discussed at length, everyone knows where each other stand. At the end of the day, it's make or break for him this season. Let's see how it turns out.

BoBo your thread refers to Roster Changes and you alluded to addition by subtraction.

Does this mean that the staff has a player in mind as a replacement for JH or any other roster spot?

No need to reference any names, just a general question.

I’m pretty sure they want an impact shooter that can play ASAP and would prefer to keep the other scholarship for a mid semester transfer or grad transfer next year. Recruiting has changed dramatically and it will be extremely difficult to keep HS players for 4 years.

I also like Harris. He did not anticipate well on the defensive end of the floor. It seemed like he was late to the game and still trying to catch up but had put a lot more mental effort into the offensive part of the game.

…….Jermaine; when I look at the list of those other higher level schools that recruited him, and then look at his performance here, I have to think again how “off” the prep recruitment ratings can be to on the court in D1…….. maybe he will resurface at a lower level and find his place there……

One four year recruit with experience, unbelievable. Again, another indictment of the program under Cox because that just doesn't happen at programs that haven't changed coaches and are well run. Go look at the thread talking about A10 expectations for the year. The programs that are expected to be good have one thing in common. They're programs that have built, developed, and kept a core group of players together. We haven't developed or kept a core together under Cox and the jury is out if he's even built a talented enough core

"The guy has a steep hill to climb, and to establish and develop CULTURE, there has to be some type of foundational framework…and that’s not an instant thing, it’s something that finding an identity, and ultimately WINNING will cure."

And that right here is the entire problem with the Cox era in a nutshell. The whole point of hiring him was that we weren't supposed to have to establish and develop culture if we kept him instead of going with an outside hire. That was supposed to be in place if we kept him. There was a foundation to build from, Hurley left a turn key operation, yet Cox has burned the whole thing to the ground in three years with nothing to show for it. Now we're "building" from a 10-15, 10th place in the A10 season with only one four year recruit that has experience. Three years in and there is no foundation for success here. Three years in and Cox has been a complete failure

One of the biggest facets of a head coach's job is roster construction. Cox' success or failure in this area is very germane to this topic
