Nope, he had some absolutely dreadful shooting games... but just kept shooting until he was benched. Their offense, at times, looked more functional and expansive after his injury, but I wouldn't put that all on him.rodfromcranston wrote:Hmmm..... on second look, he's a 38% shooter and 32% from 3. I could actually see the NCAA giving them all waivers. They could use it as an excuse for some PR to spew some crap about how much they are really looking out for student athletes.

Then I want to go back in time and have Biruta eligible for this year. We can do that, right?
But actually, now that the 12-13 season is behind is and everyone survived, I'm much happier having him around for the next two.

Re: Transfers
I'm going to throw a name out there based on nothing but speculation on my part. Kyle Vilares is a 6'4" SG from Central Connecticut and he just announced he is going to transfer after his sophomore year. In two years he has scored 1100 points. He shot .365 and .386 3FG% in his two years. And - get this - he is from Detroit. In light of what was posted in another thread about Preston being on the move recruiting-wise, I could see this coming together. Maybe they try to get someone that can play next year, and if they can't then they bring in Kyle.
Here is Kyle's quote:
Here is Kyle's quote:
Source: http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports. ... -transfer/“Nothing [bad] happened at Central,” Vinales said Thursday, two days after he shocked coach Howie Dickenman by requesting a release from his scholarship. “Everything here was good. Coach D and the staff and the athletic department showed a lot of love for me. But the part that got me was the NCAA Tournament, watching that, how fun that would be to play in. I can play in that, with that talent level. I feel I’ve worked hard enough and I’m good enough.”

TP, if he was 6'4", all day long!
The kid is a scorer. though.
One thing I recall Dan telling me was,
"I don't want a wild man coming in here and
disrupting our offense."
Not saying this kid is, but my mind ticks over to
Alan Iverson, due to his size and the number of shots.
I'm sure he'll find plenty of suitors.

Well Dan will have an opinion one way or the other.
As a freshman against Hurley-coached Wagner he scored 21 points and hit 13-of-14 free-throws in win.
Last year he scored 42 against Wagner.

Re: Transfers
McGary was a lottery pick according to Chad Ford of ESPN and DraftExpress.net. He also turns 21 in June. His stock might never be higher than it is after this NCAA Tournament. And very, very few players are actually ready for the NBA from Day 1. He should have gone.

I think Hurley will talk to Carter. Yes, his percentages aren't great but he scored 14 points a game for two seasons in the Big East. Re: Transfers
Ramster, that's a pretty impressive list of offers he got, though.
I still like the big SGs we seem to be involved with.
It tells me that's the 2014 priority, which may be why it
looks like they passed on Er.
The more I read and see about some of the rich 2014 class, the more
I think they should save them and have three for next season.
Of course, a post grad/fifth year player for next year could
play right away next season, and not eat a scholarship for 2014.

Re: Transfers
I agree. Save them. The chance of getting an impact player now is slim. This year's team will be good. Add 3 more top freshmen in '14 in addition to what we already have, and the "14-'15 team could be special. Biruta will be a senior and all the other new players, transfers and the two frosh, will have a year under their belt.If we add a top SG from the '14 class (Terrell?), we could have one of the better backcourts in the A10, if not the country. I say be patient. While '13-'14 will still be a good year, '14-'15 could be a great one.

If you save the scholarships, you have a chance to add an inside player, to succeed Biruta.
Terrell and Matthews could be potentially, our best back court ever in modern URI history.
If not Terrell, there are some really good ones Preston is looking at.
I urge posters to read the recruiting page we have here.
Some interesting and exciting information on players offered by staff.

Re: Transfers
Exactly.
Hurley knows what he wants from the SG position.
That he isn't involved with Carter, says something.
There were stories that Rutgers actually was better off when Carter got hurt.
Munford took a lot of shots, because he had to. Carter took a ton of shots
on a team with other options.
"I don't want any wildman coming in here and disrupting our offense"- Dan Hurley
speaking about what kind of player he might like for the remaining scholaships.

Why? "I kept him out cawz he had three fouls."
Who the hell keeps a stud on the bench in the second half for three fouls?
Especially while you're watching a big lead dwindle.
I never bothered after that game. It showed me
the caliber of our coach, and that his ego came before winning.
15 minutes as a freshman? On a shitty team, with players out,
and he couldn't play?
Never more than 28 minute average, with his talent, was a
disgrace.
Scott Hazelton playing behind Jamal Wise and others for a full season was almost as bad a crime.

Yeah I'll never forget that NIT game vs Creighton where Daniels spent most of the night rotting away on the bench. I think 4 or 5 other guys played more minutes than him that night, which is inconceivable. Not much to think he's come East.
Odd, he went from top scoring freshman in the country,
to 1.8ppg this season.
Lots of injuries stopped him from being the player he looked
like he was going to be.

I can see us all back in 1993. I don't want some midget point guard from conn, 5'10 is way to short. We need to go after bigger players. This kid Tyson wheeler can go somewhere else.
Let's not get too caught up in the height debate. Bigger is not always better.

Height is more important for a SG, which is a priority for the staff.
Look at every SG they've offered on the recruiting page and 6'3" is the smallest.
Tyson, Silk and Jiggy were all 6' and under, but they're PGs.

Re: Transfers
Height never hurts. One of the reasons Calhoun wasn't interested in Tyson was lack of size. And while that backfired, UConn has had a lot of quality big guards over the years. Clearly, Hurley wants a SG with some height, as Rod said. And I don't think they'll be recruiting 5-11 PGs in the future either.

Re: Transfers
Obviously, you would want a 6'4" guard over a 6' SG all else being equal but things are rarely that clear cut. I hope they aren't leaving guys off their recruiting boards just because of height. Forget just the Rhody guys, within 100 miles of URI there have been dozens of great college players who were undersized for their position. Khalid El-Amin was under 6'. Troy Bell was 6'1". Ty Rice wasn't 6 feet. John Linehan (god, I hated him) was 5'9". There are many others. They are definitely the exception but I would be happy if they were just looking for the best guys out there without any artificial restrictions. This isn't the NBA. A good guard is a good guard, especially in the A-10. Michael Cooper isn't locking you down out there.Iggy1979 wrote:Height never hurts. I recall that UCONN made a late run at Tyson but he was already committed to Al Skinner. I also remember that Tyson didn't like URI at first and many thought he would stay a year and transfer. Fortunately it all worked out great.
