I don’t feel strongly either way. But if a little used name pisses off that many people we should remove that source of contention. We have more important things to worry about.

The name PLANTATION at the time of Rhode Island's founding had nothing to do with slavery. It was just another English term used at that time for a colony. RI just followed a naming convention similar to the neighboring Plimoth Plantation.

State is already in economic shambles, might as well spend a couple million to change all the state symbols everywhere.

To be honest, other than a state seal or maybe at the Statehouse, I don't recall ever seeing the full name anywhere. Is it really that prevelant?

It's not even something people say, but it is 100% on any official state document like if Gina gave a certificate to like "kid of the year" at some school, it would have the state seal saying the full name. Yes, extremely prevalent and will cost $$$ to remove off everything. RI's agenda is becoming irrationally progressive these days. In actuality, all of the privileged folk at Brown should look into the history of the Brown family and their history in the slave trade, if we really want to be playing fair.

The hand-wringing about "but how will we change the documents?!?!" strikes me as somewhat farcical. It'll be a couple days work for their graphics person to adjust templates in Adobe or Publisher or whatever they use. When it comes to historical artifacts, its not like they're going to take the sandpaper out and get to work on it right away. Pretty much all of the things like town / city / state seals get replaced and redone over time, so, just make the change next time you do it.

I voted to get rid of it. It is antiquated. Nobody knew Plantations was part of the name anyway. The state needs to not get hung up on silly debates.
Now, how much will it cost to rename? Take the money out of k-12 education, or some useless social program.

Who is paying for all the commercials, newspaper ads, to change this name? This group has deeper pockets than the Republic Party in Rhode Island has.

Excerpt from Projo article regarding funding.
At any rate we will know today if it’s changed or not.

That reality brought Representative Williams together with former Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch and former House Finance Committee Chairman Antonio Pires.

Together they recently formed a nonprofit, Rhode Island United, to try to get the issue on voters’ radars.

With an initial $75,000 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, the group plans to produce ads to run on social media to campaign for the name change. (Similar grass-roots groups have formed online.)

I did not realize, and was quite pleasantly surprised to see this at the beginning of the question:

Text of Preamble:

We, the people of this State which state shall henceforth be known as the state of Rhode Islandthe State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, grateful to Almighty God for the civil and religious liberty which He hath so long permitted us to enjoy, and looking to Him for a blessing upon our endeavors to secure and to transmit the same, unimpaired, to succeeding generations, do ordain and establish this Constitution of government.

Seriously, has anyone on this board ever referred to it by any other name?

As far as I can tell, neither side did research and published it publicly, but I'm just some dude doing a quick Google search. My assumption is that if the estimated figure was huge OR minimal, it would have gotten out there.

I'd also note that the ballot measure changes the name, but there isn't a mechanism for actually removing the name from existing things. (i.e. It doesn't say that it has to be removed from everything in X years.) I think it would be done the next time anything is refurbished or touched up. I'm not even sure what would qualify - Is there a list of the monuments that uses the full name, vs. just Rhode Island?

Would Rhode Island be called Providence if the original name was
Providence Plantation and Rhode Island instead of the other way around?
Actually, more people live in the area of Providence Plantations (Providence Plantations, Warwick Plantations, the South County Plantations) than live in Rhode Island (Aquidneck Island). Enough of this silliness.
Let's get more Economic Development for the state. More Truck Tolls and Casinos.

Ah yes. The truck toll system.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.provid ... ate=ampart

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Building, maintaining and running Rhode Island's truck toll network will cost nearly $70 million over the next decade based on new details released by the state transportation department Wednesday.

Kapsch TrafficCom, an Austrian multinational corporation, was awarded the 10-year, $25 million contract over five other companies, Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti Jr. said May 24.

The state will pay Kapsch $2.5 million a year to build and run the toll system, locking in the largest piece of the plan's overhead costs, which Republican state lawmakers and trucking industry leaders blasted May 23.

Furher Raimondo is something else Don't get me started on her.

As far as the state's name goes (trust me, some progressive "man" attacked me on Twitter)... When RI was first founded, "Rhode Island" was essentially Aquidneck Island, the rest of the state was "Providence Plantations". Plantations meant FARMS not what we know of the horrendous plantations that enslaved African Americans for generations.

BTW why are men so soft these days? Jeez

In the context of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Plantations meant English colony, which obviously takes it even further away from the plantations that relied on slavery

Since 1950 New Hampshire as gone from approx 533,000 to 1,400,000 almost a triple

I don't think I need to say anymore.

Now do California. I think the population of N.H. swelling would have more to do with the availability of land and its lower population density. Rhode Island is already pretty built up, and if you're in a more suburb-like area, the existing population fights tooth and nail against any sort of affordable housing, unless it's for seniors.

That is a very big factor.

Rhode Island presently has an approximate population density of 1,017 persons/sq mile. New Hampshire has just 148 persons/sq mile.

Yep, and I don't have the exact numbers on it, but the population of RI who lives "west of 95"/ "west of 295" up that way is essentially minimual. We are all within that corridor.

Not in the northern part of NH. The better job market is mostly within the Portsmouth-Nashua-Manchester triangle in the SE part of the state.
