Any interest from Rhody? Is he a player that would fit our current roster?

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
Received this from a Terp season ticket holder about the twins.
********
Former Maryland men’s basketball freshmen Makhi and Makhel Mitchell announced on Instagram Monday that they have committed to play at Rhode Island.
“Big decision and it’s been made,” Makhi wrote in his commitment post.
The twins were 12 games into their first year with the Terps before the program announced on Dec. 27 that they had put their names into the transfer portal.
The duo played sparingly under head coach Mark Turgeon before departing but offered depth in the team’s front court.
Makhi, who averaged 9.3 minutes, 3.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, and Makhel, who averaged 5.7 minutes, 1.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, now join an Atlantic 10 team that finished with a 21-9 record.
Though they departed the program in December, the Mitchell twins remained enrolled at Maryland though the spring. They also visited Providence in late February before committing to the Rams.

It's like hoping the Red Socks are going to land that key starting pitcher. Hey, at least we are involved in this whole transfer process. Imagine being some of the other teams in our conference, where people leave their first school and aren't looking at you as a landing spot at all.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
Wilson's minutes per game fell in year two, which probably wasn't a great sign of his future role. He also averaged 6.8 fouls per 40 minutes, which seems... high, for a wing.

Is that a subtle force out?
I believe this is Dan’s first transfer that isn’t a Grad Transfer.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
Hm, depends on how you look at it. I always thought that one of Hurley's things was being honest with kids about their roles going forward, hence why we had grad transfers why he was here at URI. I'm sure he said something like, "I'm going to recruit at your position next year, and I can't guarantee you playing time." Is that forcing a kid out, or just being honest about his role going forward? I'd say it is the latter, unless the message was something like, "You're not going to play here and you better transfer."

Wilson was basically cut from the team or you could say he was thrown off the team. Pretty drastic move by Hurley.

Everyone forgets Matt Butler! Justice for Matt!

He could’ve stayed if he wanted. His situation is tricky since he already transferred once, so he had the option to stick it out and then leave as a grad transfer. They already had a spot open, now they have two. Facts don’t care about your feelings. I’d personally prefer Vaughn over Martin, especially with the no sit out thing not being decided anytime soon.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
Why would you say that when you know how he’s always operated as a coach? The Nolley rumors picked up, and Sid chose to look elsewhere. They had room for both; but, as Sid said, he made a “business decision.” He wasn’t happy with how few minutes he got when he was one of only eight available players, and the prospects didn’t look much better for the upcoming season. Players want to play. They can be wildly wrong about their actual skills sets, but I don’t blame them for at least trying to bet on themselves.
It’s been interesting to see what programs are coming up with to recruit right now. There’s still going to be a lot of misses (even when guys commit) in this recruiting cycle. Spring of ‘21 has the chance to be even wilder.

Regardless of how anyone has always operated as a coach, it's a new world. In the old world, "I'm going to try to recruit another forward" most likely meant a freshman, who may or may not be able to play right away. Now, this probably means more like, "there's going to be all kinds of (at least semi-) proven transfer options out there that are likely going to be able to play right away, and I'm looking for one that plays your spot."
Maybe before when people got recruited over, it was more of a 'threat' (because...freshmen) and now it's more of a 'promise' (because...player with D1 experience coming aboard)?

But I posit, things aren't so different than they were when you proposed to your first wife, whatever relationship you're referring to has to be strong, with high compatibility before you go and slap a label on it.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
In college basketball in 2020, *everybody* talks to everybody before they transfer. Like, you think Malik Martin put his name in the portal without having a couple destinations in mind? So yeah - Tyrese might have had back channel communications with folks at UConn, but I find it really hard to believe that we're not benefiting from this as well, since we've now landed three transfers.LoveThoseRams wrote: ↑4 years agoC’mon if Tyrese ends up at UConn I would have to suspect they were talking to him before he entered the Portal.ace wrote: ↑4 years ago

Every one of these kids who leaves or comes in was having conversations through intermediaries before making the move. Disagree with Rothstein on this.
Too much player movement expecting the rule change for the NCAA to delay.
A high percentage of your best D1 talent in limbo?

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
I don't care if Martin goes to Uconn. And conversations are how things get done. With a little more on court success, Cox will win more of the 'conversations' battles than he will lose, so it more benefits us.
This was largely my point when DH left and I tried to explain that a Uconn booster told me in like February that they were trying to get Hurley in to coach. I don't even know the guy, we both were at a baby shower or something. Getting him wasn't even the question in that guy's mind, he was more questioning if DH would be a good fit/winner there.

I very much hope it fails. I prefer the long view and would rather sacrifice some pain for just next season than every season going forward.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
I think you have to recruit over your kids every year at Uconn. Either it's a national contender or it's not. National contender programs have to recruit over kids and try to win a title at all costs. Probably most programs it is admirable for a coach to stick with kids he brings in, but at the teams with a legit shot at a title it would be malpractice to not try to fill the roster every year with the best talent.SGreenwell wrote: ↑4 years agoHm, depends on how you look at it. Hell no. You hope Fatts comes back and the transfers are eligible. Sorry, but with all of that and whoever else we are going to add, we sure as hell should be able to get into the tournament.

Re: The Transfer Carousel - 2020
Even if transfers are allowed to play immediately I don’t understand folks who think we would be a sure fire ncaa team. We lost 3 of our 4 top scorers. I don’t care how good the Mitchell’s could potentially be we would have to overachieve to make the dance IMO.
