New Conference
This is a great opportunity to start a new conference.
Wichita St is getting hurt in the AAC, losing guys via transfer, UConn left, they are a misfit there.
Dayton is coming off a great momentum building season.
VCU - rounds out the core “3” with Wichita St. and UD.
Iona - This is the most important piece. They have the greatest marketer in college basketball. Pitino would hype up this new conference. (Be the conference that he built). That program would be rolling in 2/3 years when the conference starts.

St. Louis
Richmond
UMass
ETSU
Wofford

Re: New Conference
So Dayton, VCU, us, St. Louis, Richmond, and UMass, then
Wichita State
Iona
Eastern Tennesse and
Wofford
How is that better than what we have now? Wichita State would be an improvement but the other three would be a downgrade or even replacements for what's in the A10 now except further away.

Re: New Conference
I'm in. Fine with me. Bring Davidson though. And Murray State instead of ETSU.

Re: New Conference
Dayton should be aiming higher. I know they want in to the BE, but not likely, unfortunately.
Should be an attractive pickup for a P5, especially after this season.
Great facilities, huge rabid fan base.
As for us in a new conference? Would still be a mid major conference...same problems keeping players....no chance with our money issues.

Re: New Conference
Change is needed. Momentum is great right now with UD. And the unique ability to attract Pitino as a hype person. I think there is a rule about needing 7 from one conference to keep your auto bid. So maybe swap Wofford out for Davidson.

This will be the makeup of the next conference that URI would most likely be headed to:
Maine
UNH
Vermont
UMass-Lowell

Re: New Conference
It unfortunately is where things look to be headed. The A-10 is getting squeezed out. It is becoming increasingly difficult to get an at large NCAA bid. An A-10 team basically has to have very few losses to make the NCAA tourney. Teams from the top leagues can have double digit losses, many of which could be considered bad, as long as they got some good conference wins. Teams from leagues such as the A-10 do not have that luxury. It will get even worse with the new transfer rules as it will basically make much of the D1 college landscape the farm system for the big boys.
If the the A-10 gets to the point where it starts to send few, if any teams outside of its tournament champ via the auto-bid to the NCAA tournament, is it really worth being a part of it. It is expensive per an operations standpoint and it requires a lot of travel.

Re: New Conference
If but one or two A-10 teams make the NCAA tournament year after year, do you you think the draw of the conference schedule will be much different than the America East? Is seeing more NIT teams really that attractive?

Re: New Conference
I ran the Richmond teamcast on the Torvik site, had they gone 26-5, they would have only gotten a 10 seed this year, yikes

Little Ricky will be gone within two years. He’ll be back in the Cartel and Iona will go back to being Iona — playing in a high-school gym in a city best known as the setting for a 60-year-old sitcom.URI2006_Andy wrote: ↑4 years ago This is a great opportunity to start a new conference.
