Week #17 - Games of Interest
In the AP poll, Dayton moves up to #4, Maryland drops to #9, and West Virginia falls to #17. LSU gets 24 votes in the others category. URI gets no votes. In the span of two weeks, on the strength of losing two out of their last three games, the Rams go from 57 votes to zero!
In the USA Today/Coaches poll, Dayton moves to #3 position, Maryland drops to #8, and West Virginia falls to #19. In the others category, LSU gets 12 votes and Rhode Island now gets no votes.
Kansas takes over as the nation's #1 team in the both AP poll and the Coaches' poll.
The cumulative record of URI OOC opponents is 189-134, 0.585, a slight dip versus the previous week.
With the road loss at Davidson, the key URI metrics mostly were down, especially the all-important NET rank.
NET - 37, down 5
BPI - 52, up 5
Pomeroy - 44 down 1
Sagarin - 53, down 5
No Monday games in the A-10:
Only one game involving URI OOC opponents :
#20 West Virginia at Texas, 7 PM. On ESPNU.

Trailing most of the game, West Virginia loses its ninth game as the Mountaineers get beat at Texas, 67-57. WVU is now in its own February swoon having lost five of their last six games.

Re: Week #17 - Games of Interest
Big bubble game right there in the SEC.
Bama could really help themselves and really hurt the Bulldogs in that one.
Bama and PC playing their way in can be very beneficial to us if we are able to win the games we should.
Two tournament wins out of your non-conference can go a longer way than some people seem to think around here.

I wonder how badly the conference is wishing they hadn't given all these Dayton games to Stadium...

Re: Week #17 - Games of Interest
In today's bubble action:
Third to last bye NC State at North Carolina at 9 on ESPN "North Carolina's season has gone in the tank as the Tar Heels have lost seven straight. Their last win? At NC State. The Wolfpack have a large number of losses to teams that are not going to the NCAA Tournament, including three in Q3. This resume can't tolerate a fourth such loss."
Last bye Utah State vs San Jose State at 11 on ESPN2 "Utah State has looked the part of an NCAA Tournament team lately, having won eight of their last nine. The only loss came at San Diego State. A loss to the Spartans would undo much of that good work."
Second to last in Oklahoma vs #22 Texas Tech at 9 on ESPN2 "Oklahoma has lost three straight, with the first two of those losses coming against Baylor and Kansas. The Sooners were swept by those two, giving them four losses against No. 1 seeds. The most recent loss was a blowout at Oklahoma State. They are just 3-9 vs Quadrant 1, which isn't necessarily fatal, but a win over TTU would help ease some pressure off the remaining games."
Third out Memphis at SMU at 9 on CBSSN "Memphis has three of its last four on the road, including a season-ender at Houston. The Tigers also get Wichita State at home. So, the opportunities are there for them to resume-build a bit. That may not matter if they can't win games like this."
Fifth out Alabama at sixth out Mississippi State at 9 on SECN "The Bulldogs suffered a tough loss at Texas A&M on Saturday and needs to rebound from that. There are no games left on the schedule they can afford to lose."
Third to last bye NC State at North Carolina at 9 on ESPN "North Carolina's season has gone in the tank as the Tar Heels have lost seven straight. Their last win? At NC State. One of my closest friends is a UNC fan - I told him I 100% needed UNC to win tonight. He told me to 100% expect to be disappointed. UNC just plain sucks this year.

I have been!
Dayton is upping the anti right now and I think they are about to run away with it.
Mason playing hard. I think they have a good coach. If Kier hadn't gotten hurt I think they would be considered one of the stronger teams in the A-10. AJ Wilson playing great for them In this one.

Re: Week #17 - Games of Interest
NC State lost 85-79 "NC State’s loss at North Carolina may not look that bad on its Team Sheet, but it still hurts the Wolfpack’s profile. NSCU is now below .500 in a middling ACC, having been swept by both Georgia Tech and North Carolina. In all, it was the Wolfpack’s 8th loss to a team not currently in the Field, putting them squarely along the cutline."RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑4 years ago In today's bubble action:

Oklahoma won 65-51 "Oklahoma picked up a needed Quadrant 1 victory against Texas Tech in Norman. It boosted the Sooners to 4-9 vs. Quad 1 teams (not great, but four of its losses are to Kansas and Baylor); it was also, based on the NCAA’s NET Ratings, their first Quad 1A (Top Tier) victory of the season. At least for today, OU can smile. Next up, a trip to Morgantown, followed by dates with Texas (home) and TCU (road). We’ll see if the Sooners can keep improving an overall mark of 17-11."
Memphis lost 58-53
Mississippi State beat Alabama 80-73 "Mississippi State outlasted Alabama in an SEC Bubble game. With the loss, the Tide fall to 15-13. They need a winning streak."
Bubble teams are 76-69

Re: Week #17 - Games of Interest
In today's bracket games:
Fourth to last bye Rutgers is at #16 Penn State at 7 on BTN "Can Rutgers win away from home? That is the question to which the Scarlet Knights are still trying to provide a positive answer. You have heard this before. The last time a team got an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with fewer than three wins away from home was in 1994. Rutgers has one, with this game and a road trip to Purdue before the conference tournament. I do not believe that the Scarlet Knights will break that precedent."
We're the second to last bye at Fordham at 7 on ESPN+ "URI has been hurt by the poor play of the teams that are the best teams they have beaten, VCU and Alabama. Each of them have spent some time either on the bracket or bubble – more VCU than Bama – but neither are contenders any more. On the other hand, the Rams also beat Providence and they are making a late surge. Obviously, the game with Fordham is must-not-lose"
First out Stanford vs Utah at 10 on PCN "The Cardinal had a good weekend, sweeping Washington and Washington State to get off the schneid. Now they have a home game against a team they need to beat. Their margin for error is still pretty small, but games that can actually help are still to come."
Fourth out Richmond at George Washington on 7 on ESPN+ "Richmond is barely in the bracket and has benefitted from a late season surge by Wisconsin, which is the Spiders' best win. They are coming off a loss to Saint Bonaventure, which has done well in Atlantic 10 play, but is still not considered a very good loss. Richmond has no good losses left on their schedule."
Seventh out Arkansas vs Tennessee at 8:30 on SECN "Arkansas got Isaiah Joe back and got a win over Missouri last time out to stop a five-game skid, all of which Joe missed. The Razorbacks need that win over the Tigers to be the start of a five-game winning streak. Only the home game with LSU can help them at all."
Eighth out Georgetown at Marquette at 8:30 on FS1
If it seems like there's a difference between how a team is ranked vs what's in the quote, it's because I use the more accurate Bracketville for where a team is ranked, but I've been using Jerry Palm for writeups on the games to give a little more context

So VCU should not be considered a quality win anymore?

Screw VCU.
Mike Rhoades is a joke.
Texas needs to fire Shaka and Shaka needs to go back.
We are going to lose our quad 1 and 2! Jesus!

Re: Week #17 - Games of Interest
biggest fear is that we get VCU in the 2 v. 7 quarterfinal. They are clearly sleepwalking through the end of the regular season but they will be motivated to turn it on in Brooklyn and its hard to beat a good team three times
