Most Hated A10 Rival Player

Watching the game (and subsequent A10 games) with MichSt last night, we had a conversation around who we hated most as a player over the years - but we were having struggles thinking of guys that we absolutely loathed.

And not like in a "I hated Deandre Bembry because he killed us" type way. Or a "wow why does Pepe Sanchez always hit that big shot against us" way.

This wasn't a question of "who did you have a hateful respect for" - it was more a "who do you hate in the fiber of your soul" type thing.

For an example, think of this more in a "I will root against Yuta Wantanabe in every aspect of his life on or off the floor because he was a whiny bitch who didn't deserve any of the accolades he got and robbed Stan Robinson of DPOY. I hate him so much if he was an accountant I would go to his job, file fake taxes, waste his time, boo him at his car, follow him home, and boo him while he cooked. I would make my life a green eggs and ham of how and where I would boo that bum" type of hate.

My vote was and forever will be Yuta Wantanabe.

Love this!

I actually never really hated Yuta all that much, but I always thought he was incredibly soft and OVERRATED.

Stan being robbed of DPOY is the single most disrespectful thing EVER.

That said.

My most hated player would have to be

MATT GLASS

After that illegal screen that killed Monty.

That was a blatant cheap shot from the depths of UMass hell!!!

After Matt Glass it would have to be every single good guard they've had.

Chris Lowe, Ricky Harris, Chaz (although he was fun to watch) Pipkins and more.

The 2015-16 St. Joe's Hawks for putting Jarvis Garrett and Kuran Iverson in the hospital. I don't remember who their players involved were, fuck them all from Martelli all the way down to the managers

I HATE Marcus Evans. It all started when he tried to start a fight with Dowtin in March after we beat them in Brooklyn. He's also such a classless player. I remember he threw some player down in the recent Dayton vs VCU game.

The duo of Scoochie Smith and Pollard always bugged me. Probably because we recruited Pollard and his abilities despite being undersized were frustrating to play against.

Jordair Jett was another.

Yuta is still hands down the winner.

Always hated Donta Bright with a passion during the Calipari/Umass years

Games up at the PCC my dad and i would always get fired up and be thinking what that POS was gonna do during the game as a cheap shot

Man there is too many to name.
Pepe Sanchez temple.
Aron Mckie temple.
Mark Macon temple.

Pretty much anyone who suited up for temple.

Temple was the #1 team in A-10. Always hard fought game at Keaney, civic center, Ryan center. URI always seemed to loose heartbreaking games to them. That’s why I was very upset to loose temple to the big east/American but they wanted there football program to expand.

Love or hate him but Coach Chaney always did what was right for the conference and always praised rhodys players in post game interviews. He always seemed to talk about our players more than his own guys. I always thought that was so cool.

Jonathan Williams of VCU graduated in 2018 I believe is a close 2nd. but Yuta is 1st due to making a NBA roster/2 way and the robbery of Stan's DPOY which should be an all time snub.

IDK who will win DPOY in the A10 this year but for reference I believe fatts already has more steals than stan did that year or is coming up on them. He should be the front runner since he is on the NCAA mid season list

Edit: Stan had 69 steals and Fatts currently has 61 currently. Fatts has cracked the top 10 all time in program history at 144 (2 away from delroy)

Then non A10, if I may, Marty frickin Conlon, just because he went NBA and he was such a stiff, all the stupid locals loved that guy, Kenny Green could ball 3 circles around that guy and never had a shot at the NBA, bad knees or not, Green (my always and forever favorite Rhody Ram) was a monster and Conlon was the robot from the original Lost in Space.

Our current Assistant Coach is my 2nd fav Rhody Ram because of his level of commitment. In all the years I've been a fan, I just can't think of a better ambassador of the program. Very smart, totally diligent, 100% effort 100% of the time. I still sometimes get a little choked up when I think about his senior night.

Not only did Rivas knock out Silk's tooth, he got in a fight with Bonzie Colson. Bonzie had had enough of Ramon's shit, so he just started him pounding him. Bonzie got a one game suspension, but it was worth it.

Too bad this thread isn't titled Most Hated Opponent Player Ever.

There's a couple from Stanford in '98 and at least one from Duke [especially from '88] that would be at the top of the list.

Let's see...Mark Madsen, Arthur Lee.....etc.

If we are going there, it's Danny Ferry. Hands down.

I was actually a Duke fan until that game. Not a huge fan, but liked them and rooted for them passively. That all changed in March of 1988.

Basketball was more physical in that era but Rivas at 6'10" and at least 265lbs (I do not care what his official weight was he was pouring out of his jersey) was still like the basketball equivalent of a hockey goon. True or false: Penders had told the URI bench that somebody better knock his bleepin' head off? I did not hear it myself, just heard stories at the time. Bonzie was taking a serious risk going after that guy.

My favorite story from the tourney game against Syracuse (if true - unconfirmed) was at some point you can see Silk laughing at the foul line before taking a foul shot. Reports have it is that a Syracuse player asked him when he was going to get his tooth fixed (the result of Rivas' cheap shot). Silk responded with, "right after we win this game."

Also, when Garrick played for the Clippers and were in town to play the Celtics, Rivas was on the Celtics at the time. Garrick if I recall correctly positively acknowledged him so I'm guessing the incident was forgiven if not forgotten. I know Garrick wasn't the one hit, but it was his back court mate.

As for conference fan bases, based on going to multiple A-10 tournaments I was really not a fan of St. Joes or St. Bona fans. Had some good conversation with some Bona fans, but several of their fans were obnoxious.

I can go way back to the mid 60’s and pick Toby Kimball of UConn. Six eight center who beat us too many times. But I would also go with Rivas. Not sure but I think it was the first game with Temple that year ( where is rod when I need him) that the fighting took place. The second was at Kearney. Electric atmosphere. Was that the year they beat us three times? Anyway, thanks Lamar for giving us a championship banner against the Owls. Beat VCU!

Ramon Rivas........I can still feel his sweat when he and Bonzie got at it under the stage side basket.......a bad scene.

The other Temple players mentioned here I admired.......they were good players.

John Chaney would sit quietly behind me in the stands, 45 minutes before the games at Keaney. Never knew why.

St. Joes fans are the most obnoxious. UMass are not far behind. VCU fans are (mostly rightfully) boastful of their program, but if we had their success I would scream it from the rooftops as well

John Chancy was an awesome coach, and among the most fun when we had seats on the sidelines in the Ryan Center as students. He always laughed at a good heckle and at least once per game would look back at the section and acknowledge we existed. Temple kicking our ass was always a given. I think his face on a stick made him laugh the most.

I don't know if I have a player that makes me go.. he is just a URI killer. I had fun playing with some of the opposing teams over the years, but none that make my blood boil between games. I know Rhody has a few that make others feel that way (Hellenga for Dayton comes to mind)
