His leaving now would be worse than baron staying all those years. If he and his players leave, we might as well lock the doors to the gym and put up a "going out of business" sign.

Dan told me the reason they rented is, because they've had a problem selling their house in NJ.
As for his tweet, he didn't have to say squat.

Seeing a lot of reports of Rutgers being interested in Danny Hurley. Would be a slam dunk, but don't see Hurley leaving URI after one year.

Crap. Does that mean they still have the house in NJ? How convenient!

This is getting tougher and tougher to deal with.

Somebody needs to wrangle something, anything, out of Dan Hurley pronto.

I know you're concerned, Rod. All reason says he should stay, but since when does reason win the day?

And, since Dan is headed to the FF tomorrow, we probably won't hear anything from him for a while, either way, unless he issues a press release.

So who's the first to get a comment directly from Hurley?
a) National Guy
b) ProJo
c) Small-paper local
d) TV station

I haven't always agreed with him and we had our moments, but Mike Laprey is very good at what he does, so I doubt we're going to hear much from Hurley until the school is sure they know what's going on.
If I had a job - or was younger and didn't have a kid to take care of while my wife was at work - I'd camp out in front of Hurley's house to be the first to get a direct "no comment," old-school journalism style. Wonder if the local TV guys will be so brave.

Local TV guys? Like Frank Crapano? None of them care.
Who said Hurley is going to the Final Four? Never heard or saw that anywhere.
I know Baron used to go. Wish someone had grabbed him.
Rambone, Hurley has a house in NJ. So what?
Is it near Piscataway? Who the hell knows.
I knew the second I wrote about what he told me, you'd go into
shell shock. Ugh!

Rod, with my work schedule in the afternoons, I'll be the last to know when something breaks.

Being in the dark about something like this, is tough. We're just going to have to wait.

Things like this seem to take on a life of it's own, doesn't it?

Still not worried. Too much to LOSE for Dan if he bolted from Kingston. Too many broken promises with recruits, players, etc. Just can't afford that right now in his career. The guy's excited about next season. He hates losing, and as I said earlier, I'm sure he considers this first year at Rhody the LAST losing season in his career, if he has anything to say about it.

I don't think this is a non-story. It's legit. Problem is, there's not much to report without talking directly to the people involved.
If I was gambling, I'm putting money on Zagoria, but I wouldn't be shocked to see KMac or PK - not sure who would take this story - get a few comments from Hurley first.
Also wouldn't be surprised if one of the local TV stations - who both do stuff with the school with Cox and Channel 12 - get something first.
Is it sad that this part of the story interests me the most? I'm such a journalism nerd.

Eric, good point about possibly throwing a bone to Rhody's media partners (Cox/WPRI) with an exclusive. Could be why communication with guys like Zags is so informal, resulting in unspecific statements like the one Zags posted earlier today saying Dan isn't reciprocating the interest from Rutgers.

What I'm thinking, is Dan may comment after Rutgers contacts him, which just about everybody here [including me] thinks will happen, and soon.

That way he can say he turned them down, and he's staying at Rhody. :P

Well, I heard just now from one of my contacts, and was told to
relax.
This person said Rutgers could be looking for a President and an AD, before a basketball coach, if
it comes down to a "who knew what and when?" situation, that was left to stew unchecked.
This mess could be a lot more than a basketball coach in trouble.
So, it would be premature for Hurley to have any comment on this.
Blames the NY media for the scope of this Hurley to Rutgers story.
I'd forgotten Jim Carr was on Rice's staff until this year.

Some faculty members are calling for the president to resign. This is just getting started.

Carr's presence was consistent at Rutgers through a series of coaching changes.

Exactly, Ace. This firing today was the tip of the iceberg.
It's a lesser Penn State scenario. The AD claims he told the President
about Rice's conduct. The three game slap on the wrist was a dodge.
What about Murdock's million dollar extortion attempt?
Who was he negotiating with to get paid off? Isn't there a criminal conspiracy somewhere in that?
It's going to be a procession of firings, and who the basketball coach is will take a back
seat to bigger people at Rutgers going down.
They'll be lucky to find anyone who wants that job, by the time the dust settles..
Eric, plenty of others on this board have better contacts than me.
I just got back into it this season. Give me a little more time.
There's this guy Dooley that I have to get to know...........

anyone still up turn on ESPN, there is an interviewing coming up that I believe is going to talk about how Gilvydas Biruta was treated (teaser was how Rice called a player "Lithuanian bleep")

I think the interview is with Murdock

Gilvydas is getting tons of attention on this Outside the Lines piece about Mike Rice's reign of terror at Rutgers. Says that Biruta's top reason for transferring out of Jersey was his poor treatment there and that he called his time there "difficult and disappointing." Gilvydas said Rice's of Rice's criticism, "It wasn't about my game, it was about me as a person."

URI Athletics would not allow Gilvydas to speak on camera.

Murdoch says that Rice's nickname for Gilvydas was "Lithuanian F*g". He also said that "for two years [Gilvydas] was targeted by this coach."

The amazing link here is Coach Carr who was front and center for all this physical and verbal abuse.

Can't imagine Coach Carr feels too good about it. If it were me, I may feel like I should have done something. What a horrible environment that must have been for Rice's players and staff.

Contrast that to today in Kingston. All roses and butterflies.

Gil's my Lithuanian brother!! Definitely going to get a Biruta jersey.

Maybe that's why Carr left, too.
Murdock spoke about wishing he'd stepped forward and done more.
There's some culpability on the assistants, it would seem.
They saw this happening every day, and did nothing.
Hope Gilvydas loves his time here at URI and thrives.
Nobody deserves to be treated like that.

I'll just add that the Biruta angle makes all this a little more complicated. Their approach has been to not comment on anything and even a reference to the Rutgers coaching position from anyone at URI opens up that door. Gilvydas is a great young man- smart and talented, very easy to root for. He'll get the right kind of attention on his own merit next year.

Mike Rice is a spineless coward. He knows he can abuse these kids because if any of them talked back or physically confronted him they would be thrown off the team immediately. Gilvydas was the best player on the team both years he was at Rutgers and Rice still treated him like complete shit. Hope he never gets another job in basketball at any level. This wasn't a one-time mistake.

My apologies to Gilvydas.

I think the most telling info to come to light about this might be the anecdote Murdock tells where Rice uses the word "faggot" in front of a group of 10 and 11 year olds. Rice didn't lose his cool one time, he is a bigot with an anger issue.

If it's not Rutgers this year it will surely be Hurley to Seton Hall next year when they fire Willard. Thor better start building the relationship with Bryant's O'Shea. Now that is a good hire for us. He is tied to RI and it would be a step up for his career. Surely you all new Hurley's tenure would be a short one? It does not take a college degree to have known that since the first day the Hurley's were hired.

Pressure now building for AD and president to be gone too. This is not over.
Do Mathews and Martin follow Hurley to Rutgers? Losing those two guys would devastate us no matter who uri gets as a new coach. Too late to replace them. I dont like how players can move with the coach with no penalty......opens up doors for unfairness with schools not only "recruiting" the coach but also part of his former schools recruiting class. URI gets screwed.

What can you do, though? Make them stay? Kids really should be committing to a school but it is usually the staff they commit to. I believe John Wall and Demarcus Cousins were originally Memphis commits before Cal left for Kentucky.

What you can do is make players sit out a year when a coaching change is made. This hurts the mid major schools far more than it hurts the big schools.
At any rate it could devastate uri's recruiting class which will hurt us more than losing the coach. We can replace Hurley, we can't at this point in the year replace Mathews and/or Martin.

Ramster, Rutgers is a mess. I don't see Dan taking that job right now. With the AD and president under fire, and all the other issues concerning facilities, players, etc. I would think Hurley would at least wait a few years. Once they get on the right track and in the B10, then I can see it, not before.
