ATP is Home from the Hospital - Dec 5 Update
Re: ATP is in the hospital
Please keep us posted. We will all be thinking about you. Good luck tomorrow.ATPTourFan wrote: ↑4 years ago Thank you everybody for your well wishes and prayers
Tomorrow I have the first of three all day long surgeries. A total of three surgeries in about 10 to 12 days
The neurosurgeons say that this is literally the most difficult procedure they perform

Sending thoughts and prayers that your surgeries are successful and your recovery swift. I have always been a firm believer that good things come in threes.

Re: ATP is in the hospital
Hi all,
Here is the latest update:
ATP is out of surgery. The last one was performed today. The tumor was removed & vertebrae in his neck was reconstructed. It was the toughest surgery the doctors had faced to date, but they believe they got everything they needed to get. How much mobility he will regain is uncertain. His upper body will be fine, but lower body mobility is up in the air. I was given permission to share this and will give more information in regards to visits, etc...if allowed. Next update will be this weekend.
ATP has got to be the toughest guy I know after going through all of this and I'm hopeful he'll continue to do well on this long road ahead.

No update. Doesn't want visitors right now. Atleast that is what I was told. Likely hitting him hard emotionally at the moment.

Re: ATP is in the hospital
I'm just keeping him and family in my thoughts and prayers, we of course can always do that, but if anyone has an inkling to do something organized or whatever consider me in. As I've said, ATP has made all of our silly lives a little bit better. I'm sure he knows we appreciate him, but if there is something we can do to show him our love and support, that's something I'd like him to know he has from us.

Re: ATP is in the hospital
A couple of years ago a was in car crash. Aside from knocking out most of my teeth it also obliterated my leg. went to RI hospital. The Docs did 4 surgeries to save the leg. But even then i could not feel my foot or most of my lower leg, and what i did feel was blinding nerve pain that kept me up for weeks straight until i was hallucinating i was going to nine inch nail concerts and living in a game of thrones like world.
2 Years later i walk around 5+ miles a day and no one who is aware of the unaware of the injury would assume I'm anything but a healthy middle aged man. Thanks to the Neurosurgeons i even have basically normal feeling in that foot.
These Doctors we have here are wizards man.
But, i made this post because i feel it's just as important a person in a situation like this has a positive, aggressive attitude. When this happened to me it's like it set off a fight or flight response. Every single moment becomes about just surviving to the next, i just wanted to get my life back so bad.. I knew that so long as that massive wound started healing it was only a matter of time before i was walking on it, despite the doctors talking to me about prosthetics for months after.
I don't know you to well but from what i've read here your a great person, you have the will to get through this. Does ATP still do those videogame podcasts?

Re: ATP is in the hospital
Hello KeaneyBlue family.
Thank you for all your well wishes support concern and encouragement
I would like to share an update on my condition. On August 30 I had an operation to remove a large tumor from within my spinal cord in my neck. While not cancerous the tumor had been growing for years and reach the point where it was too large to coexist with the spinal cord. In late July and early August I started rapidly losing control of my arms and legs And other bodily functions. I could barely walk when I was admitted to the hospital.
Because the tumor was inside my spinal cord the only way to remove it is to cut into the spinal cord which is highly risky. I was told there was a 10 to 20% chance of permanent paralysis.
The excellent surgeons at Rhode Island Hospital were able to remove the tumor. However I did suffer a severe loss of performance in my arms and hands and loss of sensation and control from the chest down. Effectively paralyzed at the moment.
But there’s some hope I can regain some if not perhaps all of my legs and torso. I can feel some sensations in my legs and I can twitch some of the muscles as well. This is a good indication that the spinal connections are not completely severed. It’s still very early so doctors are not indicating what recovery I may achieve.
Last week I was transferred to Spaulding rehabilitation center in Boston which is one of the countries best centers for this type of rehab. Since it is only three weeks from the surgery my spinal cord is still healing so progress has been very slow to date. This facility has all the best methods and equipment to achieve the best outcomes.
The facility is amazing and I have a beautiful view of Boston Harbor and the Tobin Bridge out my window. I could be here until about Christmas time away from my wife and my two boys. My treatment could continue for another year after I return home. Nobody’s sure how long it will take.
Thank you for your continued well wishes and positive thoughts.
Matt

it is hard to put into words how everyone on the board hopes for your full recovery . hope these words and the words of all the board members
can somehow give you a feeling that we are all supporting you in your return to health and hope that it will help you stay positive and encourage
you as you come along . Wishing you the best and hope to meet you at a Rhody game sometime soon.

I'm really feeling for you Matt. I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to go through what you're going through right now. That's a battle nobody wants to fight. I'll be rooting for you as hard if not harder than I will be for our Rhody Rams this year. If it weren't for you I would've never had this board/outlet to express my ridiculous Rhody fanaticism.
So thank you for all you've done with this board and Go Rhody and most importantly GO MATT!!!
