The problem is there is no depth in the pen and they are still relying on relatively unproven guys.

Brasier was good down the stretch and had a very good April, but in May opponents are hitting .316 against him and he had an 11.25 ERA, again not including JBJs game-saving robbery. He’s not this bad but is it possible he’s closer to an average arm?

Workman has had a good season but is still a 30 year old afterthought pitching as their 2nd/3rd best bullpen arm.

The offense bashing the cover off the ball hides these things until you get into a close, high-leverage game.

George Springer, ex UConn, kills the Red Sox tonight. What a year he's having.

Yanks with 3 in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Rays.

This Stroman dude is trying to single-handedly make baseball suck. More than 30 seconds between pitches...a 30 minute half inning with zero runs scored...no one wants to see that.

MLB has become a game of have and have nots, to the point of absurdity.

So many organizations only care about raking in the TV money and making a profit instead of trying to compete on the field.

We are barely one quarter through this season, and teams like the Blue Jays and Orioles look like they've already quit.

Except that tanking [or just sucking] doesn't really get you anywhere in MLB, like it does in the NBA.

The only way to make more teams competitive is to institute an NFL type salary cap...of course that will never happen.

So in the American League East, we will have 3 90 plus win teams and 2 50 win teams. Great. And the rest of the AL will have dreck except for the Astros and Twins [maybe] and Indians [maybe].

208, the Sox will be a playoff team, as long as they don't get whacked with the injury bug like the Yankees have...they don't have the depth to withstand that. Chavez obviously has been a surprise, but who else they got on the farm?

I think the farm is 'on the team' as much as possible. Too lazy to look up how many everyday guys are 22-25 years old.

But, on the farm, pretty sure they have:
-Mike Miller, the guy that used to play for the Heat
-Sam Travis, country singer
-TW Lin, solid utility guy
-Brock Holt
-Dustin Pedroyer
-The Hernandez bros (Gorkys and Oscar), hitting a combined .310

So, it's not like they aren't stacked there, too...

They together have 19 homers against Baltimore.....this season.

I don't know if it's a real story, but supposedly one time Manny was on a rehab assignment in Pawtucket and told team officials he wanted to stay there instead of going back to Boston. The fact that we don't know if it's true or not is pretty damn amazing. According to Bill Wanless, the PawSox VP of communications, he did have a couple of other Manny Moments while there:

"Manny Ramirez had a rehab stint with us in 2002 and went just 3-for-30 in 11 games (for a .100 average).

While he was with us, he had some memorable moments though. He left his car running in front of McCoy Stadium when he first arrived, thinking we had valet parking, and it took about 45 minutes for someone to realize it was his car and to get him out of the clubhouse to park it.

The next day, after batting practice and before the start of the game, he went for a haircut at a local barbershop in Pawtucket while in full uniform."

Pedey...looks like a sad ending, just read this (older) story on the surgery he had: https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-re ... estoration

From the description of the surgery and listening to him talk...total knee replacement seems like a much more certain long term option.
Look for Pedey to get that once the Sox stop paying him. Titanium and plastic are good replacement for bad cartilage.

Red Sox pulling out all the stops this weekend in NY.

Their best 3 pitchers lined up. Even playing Pearce...who's done shit so far this season, but was homer happy against the Yanks last season.

Do or die. Ha ha. Not really, but they can't afford to fall too much further behind.

The Rays are hot also. And Oakland is showing their usual signs that they will fight for a wild card too.

2-1 either way does nothing to change anything, and that's what will likely happen.

They will play 13 more times this season after this series....one team won't dominate the other.

Red Sox have to play better against the better teams. Beating up on stiffs won't get it done otherwise.

Again it's still early, but it's true.....every year is different.

Some years, everything goes your way...like for the Sox last year, when the pitching stunk, the hitting picked them up...when the hitting wasn't there, the pitching won the games.

This year, that's not happening, at least not yet. Maybe it's the Yankees turn....we'll see.

Frazier is an adventure in right field like Andujar was at 3rd base.

Didn't really cost them the game, but it didn't help.

Anyway, Judge will be back soon so it won't matter.

Red Sox will get some helping of stiffs coming up, so they should start winning....

Still too early to say it's not their year, but it certainly isn't anything like last year.

Red Sox are getting outclassed by the better teams.....Yanks got more injury problems and aren't playing well either, but the gap really isn't narrowing much….if the Sox don't turn it around before the All Star break, it's wild card city for them, at best.

And Price and Sale are the only 2 guys holding this team up right now.

If JD Martinez's injury lingers, the Sox are in a world of hurt.

There's little margin for error with this team.

David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic last night, reports are that he is in stable condition. Initially reported as a robbery attempt, but the videos released of a shooting don't seem to back that up.

There are videos circulating online of the alleged shooter being beaten by people on the sidewalk after the shooting.

The Sox are playing better, but still leave WAY too many runners in scoring position.

If they don't improve there, no division title for them. Last year, every time they needed a key hit, they got it, or so it seemed.

As for the Yanks, the human Whiff Machine is back [Stanton]…..yes it's only one game, but he's picking up right where he left off.

And Frazier, bad glove or not, who was .375 with runners in scoring position, is back in the minors.

I would love if the Yanks could get rid of Stanton, but almost 30 million per year reasons why they won't/can't. Bad contract.

Trade him to a team that wants a 200 K a season guy who hits .001 with runners on, for a couple of sodas, and pay most of the contract. Wouldn't bother me in the least.

Yes the Yanks are winning and all looks well....but look ahead.....

Just a matter of time...the homer happy or nothing approach is back....all the big guys are back and it's going to be whiff or HR....

Fine for Yankee Stadium, but not for the road or the playoffs.

Even Torres is doing it......Sanchez is red hot but what about the Whiff Machine or Judge?

Meanwhile the Red Sox are continuing to feast on cupcakes.....

The division will be decided by the 2 teams record against each other....they play each other 8 times in a 10 game stretch in late August.

The Yanks are beating both the Rays and the Sox head to head at present...if that continues they win the division.

When people think it's not the money, or say it's not the money, it usually is the money.
I think in this case, they just didn't want the combination of the money + his unreliability + his ineffectiveness in non-save sitches + inability to go two innings + inability to deal with coming in to a game with runners on +...+....

I'm ok with him not here....would still like a closer, just not him.

Red Sox bullpen has blown 15 out of 31 chances.

If anybody wants to know why the Sox are 8 games behind the Yankees, look no further.

In contrast, the Yankees bullpen is holding leads, but they are walking far too many guys, and the sheer number of pitches they're throwing could come back to bite them later in the season.

And by the way, get rid of Holder...he sucks. He isn't holding anything lol.
