The basic rationale behind my prediction is: URI lost three starters from a team that outrebounded most of its opponents allowing that team to excel in second chance points which itself resulted from some dreadful shooting especially 3-pointers. The standard on three point shooting is if you can’t hit on a least 33% of your shots, then you should not be even taking the shot. Last year URI hit over this number six times out of 31 games. Reflecting URI’s porous defense our opponents hit threes above that rate 20 times. Also opponents’ FG% exceeded 50% in 12 games, URI’s exceeded 50% once.

The current team will not have the front court presence, so the issue becomes how much will the shooting improve and will the defense stiffen to offset the frontcourt weakness. I see more hope in the latter, but it all amounts to a wash so my prediction is:

Explanation - I feel that defense and discipline will take hold and we will win a lot of close, low scoring games. I also think that the team improves towards the end of the season and gets on a great roll. Or could it be that it was sunny and in the upper 70's today here where I live in SoCal and I'm feeling a little giddy. In any case, I won't be able to claim the prize if I should win so I might as well shoot for the moon! Go, Rhody!
