The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
I just hope someone "informs" the Providence Journal.
As of 2:00pm there is no Cox hiring mention on their web site and Koch and McNamara have not yet tweeted anything. Koch's double duty covering the Red Sox may explain his situation as I would not be surprised if he was currently en route back from last night's Sox game in Florida.

I must be one of the few out there who actually like Mike Tomlin as a coach. Granted, I'm not a Pittsburgh fan.

For the record, anyone who has a screenshot of them being blocked by a Head Coach (former in this case) as their Twitter cover photo is probably not a reputable source.

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
Details are beginning to leak out regarding the coaching search. In the end there were three candidates standing along the foul line at the Ryan Center. Thorr said whoever wants to be considered for the head coaching job, please step forward. Two of the candidates stepped back, leaving David Cox in front of the other two and he was hired. At that point David Dooley was heard in the background saying "Think BiG, We Do". For all of you that were pushing for Cox, which was probably the entire posting community minus myself, you should bombard Thorr with emails, texts, letters, etc and urge him to take the money he saved by Dan jumping to UCONN and invest every dime into the practice facility and other program upgrades. If what was reported that he offered Dan 2.5 million annually is close to being accurate then there should be plenty of money available. Or was it Dan doing Thorr a solid on the way out the door and said you hire my guy and the guys I'm leaving behind and I'll make you look good with your alumni. No one is yet to come forward and reveal from where that money was coming.

This is the last thing I will post on this subject and probably not much more after that. I will just go back to reading all of the positivity until the baron 2.0 thread re-emerges so here is my bold prediction. Even with a one year head start for Cox, Rick Pitino will bring a school to the NCAA tournament before David Cox does. Let the public ridicule resume.

Sounds like you are expecting every key contributor to return next year blueman? (Layssard and Tertsea are still up in air depending on how cox handles each respective situation.) And fatts is the one that could go either way? Think if fatts sees everyone stay committed to URI and he factors in having to sit a year that he might lean towards staying.

Would have loved (LOVED) to have seen Pitino be the hire, but this will work. Sounds like just about all of the players will stay, so I expect NCAAT this year (let the public ridicule commence on that). I do think, whatever team Slick goes to, will reach the NCAAT almost immediately...jmo. The reason he won't get there before Cox is, well...Cox is going this year, and Pitino doesn't have a team yet..Cameron_Dollar wrote:This is the last thing I will post on this subject and probably not much more after that. Congrats Coach Cox. I believe you deserve this and you had some competition. Enjoy today but it’s back to the gym by Friday we need an impact 5th year player. You have the perfect sell we are one impact player away from being an NCAA lock and that’s you ... You’ll be an instant household name and an integral part of our run as opposed to how much time does he get where’s he from again.
Think the really looser in this is Danny always thought Baron was a win away from being our coach till he died, and I never was a Baron fan, but when Kevin Clark left to go with Skerry Baron’s shit blew up big time. Always thought Cox was that important to Danny.
But now it’s your time Coach Cox get to work and give these guys credit on this keaneyblue board they we’re relentless in their support of you.
GO RHODY!

Jared and Stan hung out and read to the kids in my class for about a half hour. I've had many URI athletes from various sports come in and they were easily the most engaging that has ever visited. They took a genuine interest in the kids and may have had more fun than the kids did. Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
Since the Projo was doing comparisons, it should have mentioned that the HIGHEST PAID coach in the state of RI makes more than THREE TIMES the amount that Cox will be paid at URI. The small "religious" college in Providence (PC), with an enrollment less than 1/3 of URI, pays its coach (Cooley) three times more.

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
No, that's kind on topic. This was a coaching search thread. If people want to keep posting in it, fine by me. But the actual hiring of David Cox marked the end of the coaching search and the beginning of the David Cox era as coach. That thread can continue as a place where the state of the program during the Cox era can be discussed on an ongoing basis. That was the thought, anyways.NJRhodyFan wrote:Off topic, but is there a reason we need two separate threads on David Cox?

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
We should all tweet or write the projo with the real facts and tell them to correct their misleading headline. Facts:
Fact #1:
DH (and any other coach or member of the athletic dept) is paid by URI. That makes them a UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND EMPLOYEE, not a state employee.
Fact #2:
Of the $1.1 million, only $300K is paid directly from URI's budget (the rest from a variety of other sources).
Fact #3:
Since the state only pays 9% of URI's operating budget, then the state is only paying $27,000 of DH's salary.
add these 3 facts together and even if you want to consider the coach a state employee, then either the state employees are extremely low paid, or he's not even close to highest.
This is all stuff we all here know and the article itself does explain most of it (though it glosses over fact # 3. Mentions that URI's budget only pays for $300K and the state pays for 9% of that, but doesn't specifically mention the state is only on the hook for $27K of the salary. BTW, $27K is only 2.45% of DH's $1.1 million compensation).
I've tweeted to the projo a few times this morning telling them how misleading their headline is.

4) The state pays $27,000 over the coach's salary...the coach pays $62,000 to the state in income tax. The coach is a $35,000 net positive to the state's bottom line

The Oklahoma newspaper years ago wrote an article about how football coach Bob Stoops was that state's highest paid employee at $4 million, and a Sociology professor made $40,000.
The paper asked former coach Barry Switzer about it, and he replied, "when that Sociology professor generates $100 million in revenue for the school, you can pay him $4 million a year, too."

Freakin' Barry Switzer. Yeah, I'm going to go to that jag-bag for a comment. Stoops doesn't single-handedly generate $100 million in revenue for the university. Let's put it this way...Bigsnoop wrote:The Oklahoma newspaper years ago wrote an article about how football coach Bob Stoops was that state's highest paid employee at $4 million, and a Sociology professor made $40,000.

Take away all the professors and there's no university and thus no football program.
Take away the football program, and the university still exists, there's still teaching, still learning.
