Exactly...that's the way it worked for me every time I applied for and received a promotion.NJRhodyFan wrote:Am I the only one who thinks this process is idiotic?? Assuming Cox is the choice, what happens if they inform the other candidates they didn't receive the job, and then upon contacting Cox as part of their final phone call, he displays trepidation...or wants to renegotiate part of his deal...or throws some other wrench in the wheel that prevents the deal from going through. What then? The process should be happening in reverse. Inform Cox that he's your choice, get confirmation that he's accepting the offer, and THEN you notify the other candidates.TruePoint wrote:

Agree. Joe made a mistake. The selected coach already knows and has agreed to a memoradum of understanding which includes his compensation and number of years. Thorr knows how to negotiate and you don’t do it after announcing the candidate has the job and notifying your second choice that he didn’t get it.RhodyRam86 wrote:I have to believe they've agreed in principal with whatever coach they are hiring, they've let that person know he has the job and they've told him it won't be announced until after all others are notified they did not get the position. I would not take Joe K's tweet literally word for word.
UMASS was different last year. Their selected coach signed the memorandum of understanding (a binding agreement) then got cold feet just before the press conference and backed out. UMASS could have gone after him for the penalty but just wanted to put the PR disaster behind them.

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach Thread....
I think it is more likely that the tweet was misleading/incorrect than it is that the process you all are laying out here is what is actually happening. I am willing to trust that Thorr isn't a complete buffoon at this point in time.NYGFan_Section208 wrote:Exactly...that's the way it worked for me every time I applied for and received a promotion.NJRhodyFan wrote:Am I the only one who thinks this process is idiotic?? Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach Thread....
I have to ask why do so many people think that the roster would be gutted by guys leaving (with Hurley) and the entire recruiting class would go elsewhere? I have seen people post that they "guarantee" if Cox is not hired that URI's season next year is over and the program would immediately go in the tank. What is this thinking based off of? I'm racking my brain (not much up there, I realize) and I cannot think of a situation where a new "outside" coach was brought into a successful program and all the players abandoned ship. I certainly don't remember players simply tagging along with the coach to the new school. (like some folks are saying Fatts and Dowtin would head to Storrs?)
Bill Self replaced Roy Williams at KU.
Mark Turgeon replaced Gary Williams at UMD.
Huggy replaces Belein at WVU.
Mike White replaced Billy D. at Florida.
McDermott replaced Dana Altman at Creighton.
Wojo replaced Buzz at Marquette.
Basketball life continued at all these schools. I'm not saying that Cox is or isn't the right guy to URI's next head coach. But why the "sky is falling" talk if Cox is not hired? I don't get it.

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach Thread....
Different times, different situations...can't really do an apples to apples compare of transgressions. Today every single thing that someone does, or that someone imagines them doing...is published. My guess (and not to denigrate Harrick, because I don't really 'know') is that, in today's environment, there would have been a lot more digging and a lot more public flaming of Harrick....PlayMikeMotenMore wrote:So to clarify, you were OK with Harrick's hiring? You think he was let go at UCLA because of an expense report solely? But you would not be OK with Slick Rick?RF1 wrote:To compare Harrick at the time URI hired him to the Rick Pitino of today is ludicrous. Pitino has ten times the baggage and all his transgressions are not even yet fully known. Harrick never had his NCAA title vacated. Anyone that can't see the differences is blind to reality.
The comparison is not ludicrous. Both coaches in the later stages of their coaching career, both had tarnished endings at high major programs, both won NCAA titles, and both dogged by charges of NCAA violations, some proven and some not. Like Harrick, Pitino is looking for a mid-major job to get re-established in college hoops. What's ludicrous about the comparison? You can compare them and at the same time, they can be different. I didn't say they were identical.

Re: The Official - URI’s NEW Head Coach is DAVID COX
FYI Undercover Friar knows what he's talking about. I won't let him take credit for having it "first" but he was the first to put *BREAKING* to it on twitter
Though it seems like there were a few on this board who had this as fact over a week ago but the noise/freakout drowned those voices out for a bit.
Smart hire, was never really close - but it was still a legit process. Cox "wowed" in his interview, and blew the other candidates out of the water - independent of the benefits that came with keeping program continuity. That last part is just for the mouth breathers on here who were somehow worried about this hire because of his "experience" - even though EVERY OTHER SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM IN THE COUNTRY HAS AND FOLLOWS A SUCCESSION PLAN FOR COACHING REPLACEMENTS.
