Good to see the video room getting some use, and great to see the team hard at work. Should be a better season than last year.

What happened to Charise Wilson? 2 games played, 2 starts and 4 points. Is she being disciplined or is she hurt? Thought she was our best player???

Kicked off the team? As in OFF the team? Or multi-game suspension.

Looking into it, her last game was Nov 17 vs Samford where she went 0-10 from the field for 1 point.

She is still on the GoRhody roster, but has not played a minute since that game.

Not saying this is her fault, but I heard there were chemistry issues with the women's team last year. Heard about it in March and my impression was it was a year long thing. If she was kicked off the team it seems things haven't gotten better like it was hoped.

What could she have possibly done that was so bad? She wasn’t arrested..... it’s her senior year and by far and away our best player and she gets kicked off the team? I really like coach Laforce but this program has not shown any signs of coming back to life.

I was high on Coach LaForce when she started and her first season was promising yet that promise has come and gone. With her salary being I believe the 2nd highest for a head coach within URI athletics, she has yet to show anything that warrants it. When does Thorr throw in the towel???

It seems that the offense is non-existent.......Horrible shooting percentages.
Defense is decent, but in basketball the team that scores the most points wins.......I think !

LaForce seems to have brought in more size and talent, but they are net meshing yet.
Wilson was the star and point guard[mostly]. That was a key loss.

There are some young and promising players. I would hope we see some real improvement the rest of the way this year.

Agreed, the game I saw you could tell the players are better skill-wise but together they seem lost on offense.
CTRamfan wrote:I would hope we see some real improvement the rest of the way this year.
I would be surprised to see them beat their conference record from last year. Can't be a whole lot of confidence with this team, looking at their record, they haven't been competitive in most of their games against teams less that aren't A10 caliber opponents. Got to wonder when that seat gets warm?

It has to be feeling warm now.......The law of averages are .500.

I'm wondering if it isn't team speed. Conditioning takes a year or so at this level.
Like the men's game, the play has been quicker with D1 WBB. Maybe her style/system is not adapting to what is needed in the A10 in 2018?

"The 41-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y. has signed a five-year deal with a base salary of $170,000 that will go up $5,000 for each of the next three years, according to Bjorn. Pending a one-year positive review after the first season, her contract “will automatically roll over for one more year, making it a six-year deal,” he said. There is also the possibility for other bonus incentives."

Three more years apparently. I like her a lot as well but this doesn't seem to be a team or program trending upward. Also that's a ridiculously high salary given the results and considering that I believe Raph Cerrato was started at something like 70k, and he's won us an A10 championship AND a tourney game on national television.

Correct - 4th year

2014-15: 17-13 (8-8)
2015-16: 12-18 (5-11)
2016-17: 6-23 (2-14)
2017-18: 2-13 (0-2)

No kidding. I also didn't realize she had one winning season in eight while at Northeastern. It's somewhat surprising to me how much our women's team has struggled over the years. In the past 10 years, we've had multiple seasons where we've won only a single conference game.

On the negative side: record had gotten worse every year
2014-15: 17-13 (8-8)
2015-16: 12-18 (5-11)
2016-17: 6-23 (2-14)
2017-18: 2-13 (0-2)

On the positive side:
Nicole Jorgensen 6'5", is only a Sophomore, and in her final three games of the regular season last year, Nicole averaged 17.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per contest. She got A10 Rookie of the year the 2 consecutive weeks at the end of the season - her Freshman year
URI started off 2-0 beating NYIT(Exhibition) and UMASS-Lowell but then Nicole was injured and missed the next 4 games.
Yesterday at Davidson URI lost 77-67 but Nicole had 25 points on 10-19 FGs and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. Last 4 games she has had 5,4,4,4 Fouls so if she can reduce her fouls and play more minutes she can be more valuable.

Davida Dale has transferred to URI from Syracuse. She is sitting out this season and will join the team next year. She is a very good player and was ranked in the Top 100. URI recruited her hard but she chose Syracuse, now has returned to her home state. She will most certainly be in the starting line up next season.

Maia Moffitt starts and is only a Freshman. She had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists vs Davidson yesterday

Abby Streeter starts and is only a Freshman. She is an excellent 3 point shooter She had 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists vs Davidson

Marta Vargas, from Portugal, is only a Freshman. She had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists vs Davidson

Several other players are young also and contributing

Unfortunately Charise Wilson is no longer playing. Charise was 3rd Team A10 last season and picked preseason 2nd team for this year. So URI lost their potential star player.
Charise started every game of her career at URI but her shooting statistics dropped each year
Freshman: 16.1 ppg in 30 games, 32.3% on three pointers, 74.4% FT
Sophomore: 17.2 ppg in 30 games, 31.7% on three pointers, 69.3% FT
Junior: 19.1 ppg in 22 games, 30.9% on three pointers, 62.2% FT

This season:
NYIT (Exhibition): 30 minutes, 3-14 FG, 0-4 on 3FG, 3-3 FT, 9 points
UMASS Lowell: Did not play
Minnesota: 32 minutes, 2-12 FG, 2-7 on 3FG, 1-2 FT, 7 points
Samford: 19 minutes, 0-10 FG, 0-3 on 3FG, 1-2 FT, 1 point
has not played since

These things happen in College Basketball.

URI is a very young team with some good players. Davida Dale will bring a lot to this team next season. The youth is encouraging.

They need a strong recruiting class and the current players must continue to improve next season

Ramster, I don't disagree with your sentiments there, but I'm also not sure what evidence there is that La-Force can nurture that talent. As you mentioned, Wilson has regressed as a player. Is that because defenses are focused on her because of the overall talent is down? (And if the overall talent is down, that's kind of on La-Force.) Is it because her game has atrophied because of her own actions or injuries? Or is La-Force not getting the most out of her? I'd think that La-Force is on the hot seat for the rest of this year, and if she lasts the year, she probably has to show substantial improvement in 2018-19 to make it to the end of her contract.

Good questions SG, I agree with you. She has this season and then 2 more after this on her contract. I don't see Thor moving her out with 2 seasons left, 1 at the most, based on what he had done and not done in the past.
So she gets this season, recruiting for next season (with Davida Dale coming in and no seniors playing significant roles this year so everyone back), then next season. My guess is she shows enough improvement next season that she gets at least the 6th year to further prove herself and the program. May not be what we all want and expect, but my guess is that is the way it plays out. Dale will be an instant starter imho

URI lost to VCU at the Ryan Center tonight 61-49.
Highlights included
- Nicole Jorgensen (6'5" Sophomore) 16 points 9 rebounds in 22 minutes of play. 7-11 FG plus 4 steals. She had only 3 fouls so not sure why she only played 22 minutes

- Maia Moffitt (5'10" Freshman) 11 points with 3-5 on 3FGs, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in 36 minutes

Vargas, Moffitt and Streeter are all Freshmen and in the starting lineup

Can’t we get a few more seats filled? My hope is that after this season we return tougher and more seasoned, with a big chip on our shoulders.

Seeing the conference record plummeting the way it has and all the talk about how young our roster is in this thread made me look at the roster composition since coach came aboard.

It looks like we've had eight players leave the program early in the four years she's been here. These eight played at least one season here under La-Force, I'm not counting anyone that might have left in the off-season where we made the coaching change.

Of the eight that left early, five are her own recruits.

We had no seniors finish out the year on the court because all three players from her first recruiting class left early.

Like I asked a few hours ago, what is going on here? The record trends and the roster turnover are giant red flags. Is the age of the roster a valid consideration or should that be thrown out because it seems to be at least in part a self-inflicted wound? Can we count on things getting better as the team matures or are we going to continue seeing the type of roster turnover that will continue to hamstring any promise we could have?

For some reason, it seems that no women's coach can succeed here. La-Fource does not appear to have the program headed in the right direction. Time to reassemble the deck chairs when her contract is up next year (5 year deal) and hire someone else to see if they can break the cycle. It should not be this hard. A few good recruits is all that it takes to excel in women's hoops.

I had a theory, not knowing that much about the women's team. I wondered if the Ryan Center actually hurt our program. Basically my theory was that the Ryan Center was too big for women's games and that the resulting poor atmosphere made it hard to recruit players to come here. I wondered if maybe we had better results in Keaney, with a capacity more suited to the crowds that normally come to a women's game here. Or has our program benefited from the better facilities that come with the Ryan Center? I went back and looked at the conference record for the last 32 years (16 Ryan Center seasons, 16 Keaney Gym seasons).

What I found was futility on the scale of our football program. We are 132-374 in conference since the 1986-87 season. We've had a grand total of two years with a conference record above .500 in that time. We went 9-7 in the 1994-95 season and 13-3 in the 1995-96 season, our lone NCAA appearance.

Where have we fared better? We won 28.4% of our conference games in the Keaney years as compared to 23.6% of our conference games in the Ryan Center years. Unfortunately it seems like the better facilities haven't helped us, but playing in the smaller confines of Keaney didn't help us significantly to the point where we should think about moving back.

How can we be so bad in two of our three "revenue" sports? I understand the football problem, our facilities are putrid, unsafe, and not up to the standards of our competition. Everything flows from there. But facilities doesn't seem to be a driver for women's basketball. Have we just missed on every coaching hire? Is the budget so much smaller than every other school?
