First two games this year each had an almost identical +300 more than their counterpart game ly. My thinking is this number ties very close to the increase in full season tickets that occurred. The mini pack sales increase is still yet to be seen as neither game played to date was part of offered plans. I unfortunately do not think we will see big numbers for games other than PC until mid January when the students arrive. I also think the recent injuries will prevent the team from meeting initial expectations in the OOC portion of the schedule and not drive upward momentum as was once hoped.

I hate to ask a question that I am sure has been discussed many times but does the 4,309 count turnstile tickets (actually scanned and entered the Ryan Center)or is is tickets actually sold?
Also, does the 4,309 include players, cheerleaders, concession workers, security workers, basically everyone in the building?

Sorry. I do not have a definitive answer to your questions. I however am inclined to believe it is scanned tickets as there are sometimes wide variances from game to game.

I believe it is any sold/comp ticket and any scanned student ID. Anyone working would not be included.

Maybe 1000 showed up last year just to see your signs. An atrocity that Roady Jay's signs are no more

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
With the PC game home on Saturday, that took away any limelight this game might have had last year. It’s not an apples and apples comparison due to that but still nontheless disappointing. Hopefully that turns around as the season progresses. Also as the season ticket base continues to grow year over year, this will start to become less of an issue as scarcity and the event helps the cause.

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
Attendance for weekday games is a reflection of the local fan base, students included. I'm a season ticket holder who lives in Boston; I attend select games including Saturday's and any game that I don't attend I donate to the Vet ticket program.

I disagree. This is about as apples to apples a comparison as you can get.
Same opponent, 1 year later, in November, School in session for both games
4,485 versus 5,630: lower by 1,145 or 20% fewer people
I've read a lot of excuses and "justifications" and reasons today.............not buying any of them
Before yesterday's game there is not a poster here who can honestly say they thought attendance would be that much lower than last year, but today it seems many were not surprised
No PC Game last year (Away) but now this year because Brown is on Tuesday and PC is 4 nights later on Saturday that URI Fans decided to forego the Brown game? Really? If that is the case and URI fans are that fickle we are in some kind of bad shape
- URI has now won 4 Top 25 games under DH. Complaint was Baron never beat a Top 25 team in 11 long years
- URI won the A10
- URI got in the NCAA
- URI won an NCAA Game and got significant National Publicity with performance in Sacramento, Lamar Odom and Jim Harrick publicity as they attended both games in Sacramento
- URI picked to win the A10 Conference in preseason for the first time EVER
- Top 25 Recruiting Class for the first time ever
- Dan Hurley in his 6th year
My fear is that the 4,485 is a sign of things to come. If we can drop 20% year to year like that I struggle to believe we won't see similar drops in other games as well. Was this a fluke? Hopefully, but I have my doubts.
Hurley, Cox, the Seniors on this team, the Junior, Sophomores, Freshmen and incoming recruits deserve larger crowds than what we are getting.
Our Coach will not stay here forever, he is frustrated by small crowds like this, and incoming candidates for Head Coach will take note of the attendance figures too.
We want Cox monetarily rewarded for his accomplishments and have people donate - fine. But also students, alumni and other fans needs to get in the seats in larger numbers.
VCU down year but still over 100 consecutive sellout and the caliber of the opponent, day of the week, National Football League Schedule, time of game, weather, etc do not matter. Dayton sells out regularly with over 12,000. Sure they have a head start on us. We are catching up on them fast with Recruiting, W/L Record, etc but our attendance rate of increase is snail-like.

Does everyone that is complaining about attendance go to every game?? My wife and I do (snow stopped us once last year)... Think about why you miss games .. Others have the same reasons.. Student attendance is the biggest disappointment.. You are already there. Fact is no one has the answer to why the building is not full.. Uri since I have been a fan (37 years) has always been the bridesmaids to the arrogance from up north. Not sure that will ever change.. We enjoy the games even more so now with the improved product. Enjoy the ride while it lasts, stay loyal and do what you can do to support the team.. Even with 4000 in the building it can be loud.. Let's do what we can control to keep the train rolling.. Much more fun talking about players coaches and recruits than harping on something that may never change.. Enjoy the ride.. Its kinda fun... Rhody rhody rhody

Don’t look so deeply into Brown type games. As has been shown there are local teams with far more resources and success and even multiple national championships that can’t sell out a crap no-doubt win in the OOC.

1,145 less than last year is going in the wrong direction
Student attendance is the opportunity. Put people in the promotions department that can get students to attend. It can be done.
But the defeatist, woe is us attitudes, it's the best we can do type people should not be in the promotions, marketing, ticketing jobs - get some creative, energetic, optimistic people in those roles
Reminds me of the posters who said why would a player like Jermaine Harris ever come to URI back in the pre Hurley days
We change coaches, why not make changes to bring some energy to ticket sales and promotions - focus on the students - they will come

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
The thing is, 1500 students will be there on Saturday and many others will be shut out. I wonder how many students who stand in line for an hour or so, then get to the door and are told that it's sold out, will return? Probably not a lot. The hard core students will be towards the front of the line already. They will get in. Many of the fringe student fans, will not. So, in this case, there will be too many students interested in going. Ironic.

Nail on the head with the students. By far the biggest disappointment. I don't blame them.
Make ticket acquisition as simple and quick as possible. Never make them wait in line to get in and then not let them in because too full. Ration out the tickets ahead of time. Respect their time. Do not make them waste their time in line to be disappointed. How does that make Students feel?
Mobile tickets on phone.
Get with the times. Get rid of paper tickets.
Make more than 1500 Student Tickets available.
Give them some better seating. Not just end zone
Raffle, lottery for better seats courtside - start with 50 or 100 but give them something to get them excited for
Get students involved in marketing, promotions, halftime events,
As far as enjoy the ride absolutely. I said in Jim Baron 2.0 let the season play out - the 5th year is not over yet - that was just 9 months ago. How things have changed.
Students are the key. They are not to blame either. Neither are posters here, season ticket holders, mini pack holders. URI has to turn around the marketing, ticketing, promotional aspects.
This Head Coach and Assistants will not be here forever. If we can't draw students now we likely never will

Like I said there are no paper tickets for students anymore.
You are extrapolating out that attendance will be bad the whole season because of poorly attended Brown and Holy Cross games.

Have the casual fans and the students already forgotten what we did in March? You would think they would be at least somewhat interested in an early season game to see what we look like this year. (yeah, yeah, they're all waiting for the PC game to do that. The fringe fans can even kill two birds with one stone.)

How did they fit so many people in the RC yesterday? I thought Standing Room was illegal? I'm not complaining. It was great. I had a bunch of PC fans right next to me in section 211 standing at the railing in the corner. It was great watching them suffer. I turned over to wish them a Merry Christmas with about 30 seconds left, but they had already bailed.

I thought it was limited by fire codes. If we can get nearly 8k for a sellout, I'm all for it. BTW, sitting in the car listening to Steve and Don (and Chris) for 20 minutes was a pleasure.

Also nice to get a few hundred "bonus" butts in the seats for those of us in the 6000+ avg per game club.

Remember the full effect of the mini packages incremental to the full season tickets began with the PC game and the second game in the package is the C. of C. game.

Yes, it looks like that game will have a good crowd too....not close to 8000, but well over 6000.Obadiah wrote:Remember the full effect of the mini packages incremental to the full season tickets began with the PC game and the second game in the package is the C. of C. game.

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
I think the conference schedule attendance will truly dictate Dan's willingness to stay or go.
Every single excuse that's been listed for attendance - NCAA, A10 title, NCAA win, national ranking, beating PC - we've covered.
It very well could be as many have said that the location/etc doesn't bode well for us with casual fans. Maybe that is the case, and we're not meant to have a super passionate fan base for basketball. If that becomes a reality, expect our coach to be gone shortly.
Having seen what I've seen in the Ryan Center, the paper 20 win teams could command a lot of 6k + games January to March, even when collapsing.
Saturday should've convinced the last of the holdouts that this program deserves the fanfare we want. I'm betting we get it.

That's a great point Blue no reason attendance in conference games should be lower than 6k on average

Unfortunately the students won't be on campus for 4 of those, almost 45% of the A10 games.Blue Man wrote:I think the conference schedule attendance will truly dictate Dan's willingness to stay or go.

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
Agreed. I just don't think those are the types of games Dan or anyone would expect to be packed - unless it was a year when you had a great A10 team coming in. It's not reasonable in any college environment that isn't pitting 2 top 25 teams against each other, to assume you can get 80% capacity for games when your school isn't in session.Billyboy78 wrote:Unfortunately the students won't be on campus for 4 of those, almost 45% of the A10 games.Blue Man wrote:I think the conference schedule attendance will truly dictate Dan's willingness to stay or go.

Without the students on campus, 5500 is what you could consider a realistic "sell out" without the 2000 + student fans.
If we're get 4500 for those games, you can certainly expect 6500 the rest of the way.
Win and that place will sell out. Just gotta keep it going.

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
The friar fans who bought the mini-plan solely to get in on Saturday will not return for the other 5 games.....I have been told this by several acquaintances who are doing it.......the others with no strong ties to the friars may come back for weekend games....
Unfortunately our conference opponents are off to terrible starts so the draw of playing other potential tournament teams won't be there.....

Also, interesting to note that MBB continues to sell the 5 game mini packages even though the PC game has taken place. You can buy the package with the 2/23 Dayton game in place of PC and the package will be available up to the 12/16 game with C. of C.

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
The corner sections in the 200s and the midcourt sections in the 300s are pretty much sold out for the C of C game. That's because of the increase in the mini-plans,

Re: 2017-18 Attendance Prediction Summary
Like the writer, loved this line:
Each empty seat at a game represents one fan who existed in 2006 that no longer exists today.
As attendance has eroded, so too has the overall interest in UConn basketball.
