The EC Wristwatch - Bad Timing

Unfortunately, this isn't about a new piece of fashion wear. EC is going to have an x-ray on his left wrist today

I have to believe that if they let him come back into the game, it couldn't have been broken or seriously injured. But I said last night, if they hold him out against HC to let him heal up, I won't be upset. No disrespect to the Crusaders, but we should be able to handle them without EC.

I bet it is stiff and painful today. If there's a break they'll immobilize it and he won't be able to do anything for weeks.

I'm cautiously optimistic. If they were worried about a sprain they'd be sending him for an MRI instead of an x-ray I'd imagine. The x-ray is probably just for confirmation that there's nothing broken. At least that's my hope.

The outlook for this season just drastically changed.

We do not have a lot of cupcakes in the OOC. May need another A-10 tourney run.

4-6 weeks puts him returning towards the end of the OOC. With a weakened A10 and weakened URI it may be A10 Tourney or bust if we can't find a way to steal some of these games without one of our stars.

My largest concern is it's his left wrist. How much will that throw off his game when he does return?

That puts him out for the OOC portion of the schedule.

Without him....my prediction of 8-3 just went out the window.

At least it isn't for the entire season. However how long before he's 100%?

Now we have a chance to see just how good Fatts is.....

And we might be without Stan for a while too, we'll likely know that after Thursday's court date.

Hopefully this news does not send Hurley into a funk for weeks which translates over to rest of the team. That is what happened two years ago when EC went down in Game 1 (hey-at least it was game 2 this time). Dan needs to man up in public and say it is a part of the game and everyone needs to step up. He cannot dwell on this and lament what could have been.

yeah, i think at best now they go 6-5 OOC

This sucks! next man up and hope we can get some guys playing above their level. If Stan misses games, which is still a possibility we could be 5-6 or 4-7 OOC

Stay positive. We're guard deep with veterans. Time for Garrett, Terrell, and Stan to play and act likes senior leaders. Jeff is in a lil offensive funk but will turn it around. Fatts has that Hurley style grit. Offensively we likely take a hit, but maybe its a blessing in disguise as I felt the team did better when it lived and died on lock-down defense and won low scoring games.

Interesting thought on Thompson but I'd be surprised if they activate him as 1) we have depth with guards and 2) he's still recovering from surgery and is far from 100% based on what Steve and Don were saying last week.

Awful news and I feel really bad for EC but this is a different team than when we lost EC two years ago. We still have 3 senior guards along with Dowtin and Russell. Obviously losing EC for 4-6 weeks hurts the team as a whole but we should still be a very good team.

If we can’t beat Nevada with EC, hard to see us beating Alabama, SH, Vandy/UVA, and maybe even PC (although that is home so who knows.)

Shitty.

Have to take a silver lining...

Jared is more than ready to be the alpha
Our greatest depth is in the back court
As others said, Jarvis and Stan have to step up
Dowtin and Fatts have to score (and they can)

Biggest issue I see- without a low post threat EC created floor spacing bc defenses keyed on him.

I feel bad for EC Matthews, after all he's been through during his career. The best thing for URI is that it's now rather than in February. I think Terrell can pick up some of the slack, and I'm a big fan of Russell. I think I mentioned this here before, but I spoke to his brother (WAC player of the year Dewayne Russell), and he said that Fatts will be better than him.

Tough news.
As BAR said, we have depth at guard and Terrell
does well when EC is out
I hope Dan doesn't do his hang-dog act, like he
did a couple of years ago.
As the leader, his attitude effects the players.
Belichick and Brad Stevens don't mourn their lost
players, they just go to Plan B, and win.

I feel like this situation is much different than the one a couple years back. I think the team is older and more talented, and they know EC will be back for the most important part of the year. I expect Dan and the entire team to handle this better. The Celts lost their prized free agents minutes into the season and haven't used that as an excuse. URI shouldn't either.

Are you people out of your minds...I'm sorry and I'm not trying to offend anyone but this is absolutely devastating news to our team/season and to EC. What do you think we are the Patriots? Next man up...we aren't Duke. We need EC just to have a chance against Seton Hall/PC/Alabama/Vanderbilt. This was EC's final hurrah season and god only knows now when he'll be himself again. I feel absolutely terrible that he has to deal with another injury again. I feel sick to my stomach. I know are players will give it their all and I will support them all the way but this is just not right......life is really just unfair. I just really can't believe this is happening.....unbelievable.

Next man up. And it's not the entire year, just until new years. This isn't a season killer.

Also gotta imagine we get the injury benefit of the doubt come selection Sunday. We are a known commodity now.

Also 4-6 weeks means it's a crack and not a major break. Even easier recovery

Well this certainly hurts our at large situation. With the way the A10 looks this year, our big games are going to be OOC. Hope we can win some between SH, Bama, Vandy/VA, and pc. Cause it seems like slim pickins in conference.

Hmmmm... I wonder if Tom98 is actually a Russian BOT sent here to divide us. heheheh

Team will become mentally stronger now. All for EC!! Do it for EC!! We must not hand off the season to EC with nothing but sweeping the A-10 tourney top get to the Dance.

Thank you Neo. They now have a purpose (other than thinking this season was theirs for the taking). The team can be the hunters once again! Re-born, better than ever!

Doesn't matter much this year. Our SOS is strong enough that we don't need to finish the OOC with 1 or 2 losses to be alive.

.....yes, yes it is devastating news, no question......feel bad for EC for sure.....for me next man up is not an impersonal expecting an immediate off the shelf replacement for EC but rather the move on approach, deal with it, keep team goals in focus, each player digging deeper to see what they can do, and not dwell on poor us.....

Fatts will get more PT, which will only help him develop faster.....

Not out of my mind, at least I don't think so...

Terrell's the best player on this team in my eyes. EC is pretty much only a scorer, average defender, ball handler, passer, etc. Two years ago when we lost EC it really hurt us because we really didn't have any other consistent scorers on the team when it came to guards. Terrell and Garrett were sophomores, McGlynn was supposed to be a shooter who came off the bench, and Thompson was a freshman. This year we have Terrell, Garrett, Stan and Dowtin who have all proved they can score. Also Russell looks like he could consistently give us some points off the bench.

I feel like some people still have it in their mind that EC is a lottery pick type player like he was talked about as a freshman. He's a very good player but he's not at that level and the team should still be very competitive without him.

I had them at 8-3 non conference. I'll say 7-4 now. NY will be huge. Don't see how they beat Seton Hall but they need to win UVA/ Vandy. 7-4 Will keep us very much alive in the at large conversation as long as we win 13 plus in conference. Committee will also understand that we were without EC.

Unless we shoot 50% or better from the perimeter we will lose by 20+ to SH. I've watched more of SH games over the past 35+ years than I have Rhody (lived about 10 minutes away growing up In NJ, dad friends w/ PJ, etc). They are primed to be a Final 4 team imho. Delgado is going to take our frontcourt behind the shed and have them for lunch...

With or w/o EC we lose unless we shoot the lights out, and at the FT line too. Must be focused. A nice dinner bet w/ my brother is at stake.

Stan is awesome...I love having him in the starting lineup because he can affect the game in so many ways...Him, Fatts, and Jarvis can all pick up the slack in scoring... Guard depth is not an issue. Your post sounds like it's season ending.. Relax..
