Week #10 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Today's release of both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll once again finds no A-10 teams in the rankings. VCU and Dayton got votes in the AP poll. Dayton got one vote in the USA Today poll as well.

Duke moved up to the #7 position in both polls. Cincinnati remained at #22 in both polls.

After the Villanova loss at Butler, Baylor takes over the #1 spot in both polls.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 114-73, a winning percentage of .609, a slight increase from the previous week.

Today begins a summary of URI's position in various measurement systems ranking the 351 schools comprising NCAA D1 basketball:
.
             Week #10

RPI* 41
Sagarin 38
Pomeroy 35

*live-rpi.com
There are no games of interest tonight in either the A-10or among URI OOC opponents .

That was a 1000 to 1 shot...or better.....

There was a 12 pt. comeback in the final minute in last years' NCAAT....and I saw that one....but this has that beat by a mile.

We are still in the intersession period for all A-10 schools. Duquesne opens its Spring term first on Jan. 12. All the other schools begin classes next Tuesday, January 17, the day after the Martin Luther King holiday, with three exceptions - URI, UMass and George Mason which all begin Spring classes a week later on January 23.

Not a lot of action on Tuesday evening. In the A-10, only one game:

George Mason at Saint Joseph's. 7 PM.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

#7 Duke at #9 Florida State. 7 PM. On ACCN.

PC at De Paul. 9 PM. On FSN1.

Other games of interest:

Baylor with its #1 ranking on the line travels to Mountaineer country to take on #10 West Virginia. 7 PM. On ESPN2. Never cared much for West Virginia because when they were in the A-10, they always complained about how beneath them that was. They whined a similar refrain when they were in the old Big East with its basketball/football fault line. Maybe they are finally happy in Big 12 land, but then again maybe they yearn for the SEC! . Go Bears!

Also, in the Big East #15 Xavier visits #3 Villanova. 7 PM. On FSN1

On the strength of excellent shooting in the second half, George Mason surged by St. Joseph's, 75-67. Just Maybe URI has to be more concerned with their upcoming visit to GMU than the one to Hagan Arena.

Duke absorbed their third loss of season as they are soundly beaten at Florida State, 88-72

Also, Baylor's stay at #1 will be short lived as they are pounded by West Virginia, 89-68. Will Kansas wear the crown next?

I turned off the PC game with about 5 or 6 minutes to go to watch Indiana and Maryland which was a wire game. At the conclusion of that game turned back to the PC game with under 1 minute to go. I was shocked PC was now only up 2. When I was watching they were in total control and looked like they would cruise to easy win. Sounds like they had one of our typical meltdowns at the end of the game. I had questions about any of those teams being considered "good" losses. At least, in PCs case, they will still have a few games left vs ranked opponents . It's unlikely they will win any, but at least they have a shot to get a very good win.

Wednesday night action in the A-10:

GW at VCU. 6 PM. On ESPN2.

Fordham at Davidson. 7 PM.

Dayton at UMass. 7 PM. On CBSSN.

Saint Louis at Duquesne. 7 PM.

St. Bonaventure at Richmond. 7 PM.

The Dayton/UMass match-up should be the most informative game of the evening.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Houston at East Carolina. 6PM. On ESPNN.

Lafayette at Holy Cross. 7 PM.

Giovanni,
I have thought for a while now that PC would be our worst loss. PC is ranked 91 by RPI Forecasting, DePaul ranked 223.
Of our 5 losses: Duke is 9, Cincinnati 14, Dayton 25, Houston 39 and Valpo 75.
I also thought the game was over but I kept watching, hoping DePaul would pull it out. The oddest thing was how PC went into a stalling style of play on offense with about 6-8 minutes left in the game. PC was owning DePaul up to that point in time.
DePaul was playing bad. Bad shooting, bad defense, bad everything plus hardly any fans in the stands.
PC had so many opportunities to put that game away and in the end they gave it away. Horrible coaching decision to go to that stall ball.
Even with 2 minutes left and 1 minute left you still thought there is no way PC loses this, but they did.
Worse yet they foul the best FT shooter on the team when he scores inside at the end of the game so DePaul actually went ahead, then PC misses a layup to end the game that would have won it.

That stalling style of offense late in the game?

Did Cooley take a page out of Dan's playbook?

More bad things happen when teams do that, than good things......

ramster, the PC and Valpo losses could be killers.....both could end up being considered bad losses.

Can you imagine this board if URI had a 9 point lead with 1 minute 49 seconds to go at Fordham? And we missed a layup at the buzzer that would have won the game? And after Hurley told the guys to take the air out of the ball?

They typically get better and better as the year goes on.
But they are just always so good at home. A team like GW with no well established guards is very susceptible to the ass whipping they are receiving tonight.
Very glad we don't have to go to Richmond and play them this year...

I've watched a little bit of that. UMass is jacked up, they really want their first A-10 win.
Buuuut Dayton made a bit of a run at the end of the first half. I have a feeling UMass's lead won't last.
I don't know if I like the idea of playing an 0-4 desperate UMass team Sunday though...

VCU just walked all over GW, 85-55, forcing 17 GW TO's and making GW take bad shots for a poor shooting night - 2 for 16 on threes alone.

Several surprising halftime scores in the A-10. Will this continue in second half for several upsets???

UMASS now by 11 with 8 minutes to go as they just scored 8 straight points......Charles Cooke is playing for Dayton too.

Kind of a good reminder that these games happen, even to good teams. Unlikely that we will go the whole season without one.

We need some teams to miss their shots against us late in games....even the better teams don't always make them...except against us.

Like I said, UMass will not be an easy game at Amherst. At all.

Dayton struggled on offense before Cooke went out with his injury, then when he was out, they moved the ball much better as we know.

Now he's back, and they look bad. He giveth, and he taketh away.

St. Bona led for a good part of game - into the thirteenth minute of the second half when Richmond got the lead and opened it up from there to win, 78-61. Richmond and VCU now stand atop the A-10 with 4-0 records.

Saint Louis gave Duquesne all it could handle and the Billikens led most of the game, but Duquesne was able to get control in the closing minutes to win, 73-66.

UMass winless in the A-10, beats Dayton on the strength of balanced scoring from UMass starters and 19 Dayton TO's, 67-55.

Cooke was by far not the only reason Dayton lost this game. Several Dayton players were off and got to hand it to UMASS. I'm much more concerned about Sunday than before I watched this game. Not sure how well we match up with them.
Door is certainly open for us to win Thursday and Sunday this week.

I don't know how you could have watched that game and come away impressed with UMass. I didn't think they looked good at all. Dayton just didn't even show up. I have to agree about Cooke. He was not impressive at all. Based on the little I've seen dayton, they almost look better off without him.

Fordham upsets Davidson and takes a big road win keyed by a late trey by Joe Chartouny, 60-54. Saint Louis is now the only winless team in conference play as both UMass and Fordham shed that status this evening.

There's no excuse to lose to Dayton at the RC.

Pollard and Smith took the night off.

Look out for Richmond...surprise there.

BTW, Fordham beat Davidson at Davidson.

What the fuck is going on?

Jeykll and Hyde stuff...everybody is beating everybody.....

Richmond and UMass up....GW and Davidson down....VCU the class right now, and we should be 2nd.....
