Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2016-17
I can't see how Rhody would even drop one spot, nevermind out of the rankings altogether. They beat a top 25 team by 5 and lost to the #1 team by 10.
And can McNamara be any more of a douche? Having to needle Rhody fans isn't very professional. Journalistic integrity at its finest.

Yeah the more I think about it the more you're right. The fact that he has us just in at 25 is actually dumb based on how we are so far. Someone on twitter asked "which teams that haven't beaten a top 25 team yet do you have above URI and why?" which is a great point.Sweep The Leg wrote:I can't see how Rhody would even drop one spot, nevermind out of the rankings altogether. We've done everything a ranked team is supposed to do. Smash lesser competition. Beat good teams. Don't get embarrassed by the great ones. 4-1 with a top 25 win and the loss to number 1. We belong. Kmac is dumb.

CBS sports updated their top 25 yesterday and have the Rams at #20 improving one spot from #21. Seems about right.

It's us pretty much staying the same (we were #21, Creighton had a big week and jumped up, Baylor went ahead of us on their win vs #4 and us and Texas flip flopped, and Michigan St fell behind us with a bad week)

Amazing to be penalized for winning a neutral Top 25 game and then losing next day to #1 (or even #6) Duke by a respectable margin.
Can't wait to see the individual ballots.
At least we didn't get bumped out.

Okay, I get it, everyone usually has problems with their teams position in the top 25, but Texas???? Get the hell out of here. Three wins over BS teams and they beat us out? No idea why that happened.

Texas beat Incarnate Word by 5. We beat #24 Cincinnati by 5. They have a soft ass schedule too.
I don't get that one. Whatever. Let's not pull a Louisville football and bitch about it and come out flat Friday. Hopefully this is a motivator.

It's easy to see why Texas improved in the polls, they weren't far behind URI last week and between comfortably winning both games and teams falling around them, it's not hard to see how they picked up 17 more votes.ATPTourFan wrote: and then losing next day to #1 (or even #6) Duke by a respectable margin.

Amazing though that URI lost 39 votes. Have to wonder if people bought into the "Duke has all of these injuries" combined with "2nd game in 2 days," "no depth," and "the game is 40 miles from the URI campus," and the fact that Duke pulled away comfortably in the 2nd half must have really impacted a few voters. I can see them falling a few votes. 39? Wow, very surprised.
Teams shouldn't get crushed for having an off-day, I'm sure the comeback the day before was physically exhausting. But someone voted for Rutgers ... Rutgers???

The Brown game may have hurt us slightly as well as the Duke game. Maryland got dropped from the rankings after week 1 due to a close game against American so I could see the same logic applied to us with the Brown game. Can't be too upset, we're still ranked and have gotten passed what may be the two toughest opponents of the season.

Stuff like this is why I can't get too worked up over the polls. You have idiots like Dicky V voting, and there will always be mistakes like Rains made. Probably never even checked the score, and just assumed Cinci won.

Of note, a few of our early season advocates have dropped us a bit causing a good chunk of the drop in points:
Carmac Gordon dropped us 5 spots (14 to 19)
Kevin Lyttle dropped us 6 spots (16 to 22)

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2016-17
Overall assuming we take care of business and stay ranked into the conference schedule, I have a feeling we'll have more beefs with the rankings later in the season than what is happening now. The difficulty of the A10 is underappreciated and voters will probably crucify us for any conference losses with little corresponding respect for beating the top tier A10 teams.

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2016-17
I hope that people realize that there is no point in over analyzing why a voter or the collection of voters voted one team up or down in any given week. They just don't pay that much attention, honestly. It isn't just BJ Rains making a mistake - which he should be forgiven for, it happens - it's more the larger point that URI getting bumped down doesn't have to do with Duke having guys hurt or a less than stellar performance in the win over Brown, or why Texas would get credit for doing nothing and we'd be penalized for losing to a higher ranked team even though we had a good win. Mostly, these guys just look at W-L record, and if you lost a game that week then you move down. If you don't lose a game, you just jump whoever ahead of you did lose a game. There isn't a lot of thought involved, unfortunately.

Guys, it's November. Come late February and early March, this means absolutely nothing. What matters is the victory over Cinci and getting Duke on our schedule for RPI/SOS. The opinions of sportswriters around the country really don't phase me at all. Win the next game and keep beating quality opponents, and we'll be fine.
Don't get me wrong, having that number next to our name goes a LONG way in getting casual fans in the building but other than that, I really don't see the point of getting worked up over this.

In the long run though, top 50 wins mean a lot and we aren't going to have many opportunities to get them....
Maybe VCU and Dayton in our own conference, and that's it.
We're 1-1 right now [Cincy will definitely be top 50 as we should be in time once the RPI shakes out]
We will have quite a few top 100 games though, win more than we lose, and we should be golden. Ranked in March? Maybe, maybe not...we can't afford too many losses to anybody........especially 100+ RPI teams.....

Yeah I know we're new to this whole ranking thing, but it's not worth bitching about. Like George Carlin said think of how stupid the average American is, and remember that half of everyone is dumber than that. 65 random sports writers from around the country, can't imagine they pay that much attention. Especially with college football and the NFL on.
These polls matter in February.
Just win our games. People will notice, and the rest will take care of itself.

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2016-17
I think people just need to remember that the initial rankings also began subjectively for each voter, and they make alterations based off of that. For example, Scott Wolf opened the season with Texas at 18th and now has them at 12th. Craig Handel opened the season with them at 15th, now has them at 13th. That's a big chunk of votes that helps minimize all of the pollsters who have them unranked. Like you said as teams lose ahead of them they pick up spots, and picking up 1 or 2 spots by pollsters who had them in the poll already is what enabled them to rise. It's not as simple as breaking down the 1 v 1 resume. As a result, Texas, who was only 17 spots behind URI last week, picked up spots, and URI, who lost poll spots as a result of their loss, was passed.TruePoint wrote:I hope that people realize that there is no point in over analyzing why a voter or the collection of voters voted one team up or down in any given week. Remember folks, the A10 gets little respect compared to the P5's....... And URI is new to this "ranked" thingy........we have less margin for error...any loss and we get downgraded, no matter who it was to.....
If we lose even one game in the next few weeks, we are liable to be out.....

Re: Rhody and A10 in the Top 25 Polls: 2016-17
The Brown game didn't help us. Also Duke had already lost last week so they weren't really the top team in the country and anyone who watched the game knows that even though we lost by 10 it wasn't very close. 23 is still a very fair ranking, beat Belmont at home comfortably and then win two on the road and we should be closer to 15 than 25.Rhodymob05 wrote:Who ever thought losing to the highest ranked team possible in America by 10 and beating a top 25 team would drop us 2 or more slots. What so these azzzos want from us?

I agree, I'm happy to be ranked and thats great so I'll leave it there. BTW Cincy beat Penn State by 21 yesterday. Should help us a little right?

And remember it's this time of the year that we're trying to get buy-in from our passive/casual fan base. Having that national ranking every week is going to help drive home the idea that we're good.
Given that we've finally been on TV (and at least ESPN3 footage is available from our win vs Cincy), people will start to believe.
Sure hope we can get through the PC game without another loss. That would be amazing for attendance.
