2016-17 Home Attendance Prediction Summary

Unread post by Obadiah »

The distribution of predictions is wide, about a thousand fans per game. If you put that in monetary terms, it amounts to about a quarter of a million dollars, so I am sure Athletics is rooting for Mongo to be right.

Is there a limit to free student tickets? Were any students turned away or forced to have to buy tickets?

I've heard that the soft cap is 1500, but if the game isn't going to sell out they let more students in for free. I think the only time they have to pay is for an NIT game.

Seems fair to me. When my daughter went to Syracuse, students had to pay.

Well students technically do pay, it's just with an activity fee on their tuition bill.

Monday night. So much of Friday's opener were groups of families and other kids groups and teams.

Attendance gets a lot of discussion and people are in general almost always disappointed, discouraged and upset.

Bottom line could be that this is the norm. Many URI graduates leave the state and move where the jobs are.
Many URI graduates were not that enthused about the basketball team when they were there......not likely they are going to catch the bug after they leave

It will probably take a while of the team being strong To make it fashionable to go to a lot of games, especially the bad blow out type games. It can happen but it will take a while

Meanwhile enjoy this ride. Attendance is simply going to be what it is going to be.

We have waited way too long to get back to this situation.....1998-1999 to be exact. The blip when we were rated during the Baron years does not count to me because Baron blew it and the season fizzled and was just a shame.

This is the year people! Attendance acceptable or not acceptable we know we will be there.

Yes it is what it is.
Go to the games and enjoy.
The good thing is that you can go and get a much better seat than if 6000 were at the game......assuming you don't have season tickets.

Plus less traffic to deal with

There is a glass half full view for virtually everyone in this world

Are we coming off back to back to back NCAA tourney berths and located in the state's capital?

Last night's attendance will not be typical.

I hope not. As of now, there are 16 sections with "high availability " for tomorrow night's game, more than there were for Marist.

And, to be fair, last night was also their home opener. Like we saw last week, the intrigue of opening night will bring a few extra fans to the arena. Comparing the home openers would look like this:

Team Attendance Capacity % Capacity

PC 8310 12993 64%

URI 6052 7657 79%

There's a long way to go and, as this team continues to perform well, attendance will continue to increase. Best part is that it's only the beginning and we get to enjoy the ride.

For the Marist game the attendance was 4021 with a student attendance of 1100. Averaging 1500 students through the first game. I hope we keep hearing student attendance numbers throughout the year.

We need the local students to come during Thanksgiving break against Belmont and especially during Christmas break (3 league games, I believe).

Just win, that simple. Cincinnati, PC.....and.....get a shot at Duke.
Lose 2 of those 3 games and attendance will be disappointing.

Beat Cincinnati and you are assured to prolong the run in the polls. The Duke result shouldn't impact us negatively if we lose.
Beat PC because the perception of the importance is greater than the reality, and it helps in the battle for share of voice in the state.

These two wins will help maintain enthusiasm and interest through the holiday breaks and before our big conference games that are sure to sell well.

It is HUGE that the three biggest home games are in February when students are on campus (Dayton VCU Davidson). Those games should all be sellouts.

We need to approach 5K tonight - sleepy Wednesday, students should have ZERO to do besides this game.
Hopefully Rhode Islanders are more compelled to drive 25 minutes with a local foe.
Get off the couch, grab a friend, and go see the nationally ranked Rams. How many freakin times have you been able to say that?!!!?

The whole "its hard to get to Kingston to watch a game" is so half ass and just a lazy excuse. This is the 21st ranked team in the country facing an in state opponent. Will be a disappoint if its anything less than 5000.

All you have to do is look at the ticket map. There are TONS of tickets left, even a lot more than there were for Marist on game day. Unless there are huge game day sales and/or a large student turnout, attendance won't be anywhere near 5000 and possibly under 4000.

I think you have to factor in the fact that there has been 3 games in 6 days as well (all against not so exciting opponents). Have to imagine that will hurt attendance for these games a little as it is unlikely most people outside of the die hards are going to be able to make that work.

i don't think attendance will match Marist.
5000 for the first game of the season, introduction of 5 new players, Friday night game with most not working the next day, EC back for first game in a year plus EC going for his 1000th point.......

I'll be shocked if we get 5000, and surprised if it exceeds the Marist game.

Most, if not all, of my friends that grew up in Rhode Island with me now live elsewhere. Simply put, it's difficult to make it to weekday games for the vast majority of recent graduates and those that grew up with the 1998 elite 8 run. It's not feasible for me to attend more than 3-4 games annual from Chicago and/or Louisville, unfortunately. I will watch from afar for the non conference slate and will attend games in St Louis, Dayton, Valparaiso and Kingston once or twice - when the games are against more high profile opponents.

If we continue to win the casual fans will show up.

Somewhat off topic, but I'm hoping to see the day that Southern Rhode Island attracts recent grads with six-figure salaries. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening anytime soon and in the meantime our talent will continue to go elsewhere for work. I'd be interested to see attendance analytics comparing recent graduate numbers between URI and comparable institutions located near major cities in the same region. Outside of student attendance, what do our demographics look like? How does that compare to someone like PC?

Not only are lucrative jobs scarce for URI grads but better opportunities lie elsewhere AND RI is one of the most expensive states for retirees. Tons move to Florida for the weather, no state income tax, lower cost of living.

No I think it is more reality.
It is what it is. 3rd game of the young season, against a weak unexciting opponent,on a Wednesday night. Expectations for attendance just need to be tempered to reality otherwise people will continue to be disapppointed game after game after game just like this board proves.

Look, regardless of circumstances...the continual voicing of continued disappointment...will not be denied. ;)
