I also think Warwick Mall is pretty useless other than Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, Target, and H&M.

Does anyone have any updates on how this project is going? Construction was supposed to begin in February of 2015, but I haven't noticed any outward appearances of construction. It certainly would seem that the target completion date of July 2019 is in jeopardy unless I'm missing something.

Re: PASSED: Question 4, $125M bond for College of Engineerin
In the absence of specific information so far for how the engineering complex is coming along, I looked up the process for the new chemistry building. That one was approved on the 2010 ballot, I couldn't find an anticipated completion date from that time. The groundbreaking for the building was held May 5th, 2014 and it seems like the building is going to be open in the fall. I'd love to know why it took 3.5 years to go from voter approval to groundbreaking.

According to the Governor's capital budget recommendations, construction should start at the beginning of the 2017 fiscal year. She recommends a bond question on this year's ballot for $25.5 million for phase 2 of the project.

Was down at URI this weekend, still no obvious signs of demolition/construction taking place. From walking by and looking in windows it still seemed like there might be a lot of equipment still inside, I'd imagine all that stuff would have to be removed before the project could even get under way.

Yea maybe there's a delay in financing or some sort of construction demolition ordinance. Hopefully is picks up quickly.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Was down at URI this weekend, still no obvious signs of demolition/construction taking place. No obvious demolition has taken place yet, but they've built a staging area in the middle of the engineering quad. I believe demolition will begin in January now.

I haven't seen the site plan, but I was hoping they would have tried to save those two enormous cottonwood trees that lived in the center of the engineering quad, too bad. Good to see progress at least.

Re: PASSED: Question 4, $125M bond for College of Engineering
Was on campus today. I had thought Bliss Hall wasn't going to be renovated until the new engineering building was finished next summer, but they're working on it now. Most of the windows were out and had plywood over them, so at first I figured they were just replacing them over the summer, but the noise coming from the building suggests heavier construction and they had dumpsters outside the building. I can't imagine it will be open when classes start in the fall

Re: PASSED: Question 4, $125M bond for College of Engineering
Correct, I'm an engineer and have heard from faculty that they are relocating classes from Bliss to other sites for this coming semester and maybe year. In a fortunate circumstance for the new project, the granite rock used for 3 sides of the building during construction in 1928 happened to run out from the previous campus quarry which was used. Therefore the back of the building was finished with brick, and unlike the other walls this can be altered/rebuilt.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Was on campus today. While the face of Bliss will remain as is to maintain the quadrangle views, the rear of the building will be expanded and modified to align more with the architecture of the new engineering building.
What remains to be seen is how long the staff/students will be kept out of Bliss, whether it is the duration of the rear addition work or only until the new columns/walls connecting to the rear addition are built.
