Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
Some fans are miffed a FBS school has not hired him by now.
His name came up in regards to recent Michigan and UConn AD openings.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
He needs more experience, i.e., team successes in major sports to attract any serious attention. There are other political factors not in his favor. Interestingly, he's lucky to have the gig he does.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
Yup. He gets the football program back on its feet and the BB program to the NCAA's....bigger schools will come calling.
Neither are easy tasks for sure. His football coach is a big question mark as of right now.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
why do you guys constantly question the football coach? he inherited a mess, has been successful at the FBS level as a coordinator and was 21-1 as a head coach before coming here. Just wondering.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
Football and outdoor track facilities, and baseball stands are needed badly. Not that AD does not know this, just that the Funds to do these are lacking. Football coach's or coach's have not been the problem, facilities and upper Administration support and State of RI support has been.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
Because he's never been a head coach of a scholarship level football team before he took over here and he was a crap defensive coordinator in the MAC for the majority of his career.Surfri72 wrote:why do you guys constantly question the football coach? he inherited a mess, has been successful at the FBS level as a coordinator and was 21-1 as a head coach before coming here. I see the perception a lot that URI football has never been good, and I'm honestly not sure where it comes from. They won three conference championships in the 80s. In 84 and 85 they went a combined 20-6 (9-1) over two seasons.

Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
That perception comes from how long ago that is. Hell I was a kid that went to those games, though still young enough I can barely remember them. Now I'm old and grey, or at least I feel old though I'm definitely getting pretty grey. At a certain point the glory is so far in the rear view that it's just not relevant.

And they followed that up with two 1 win seasons. Two years does not make an established program. Plus, only everything has changed about the landscape of college football in the last 30 years. Even the biggest football supporter should be able to admit football at URI has never been a rebuild, its a build and its a build from almost nothing.SmartyBarrett wrote:I see the perception a lot that URI football has never been good, and I'm honestly not sure where it comes from. Re: Thorr Bjorn Recognition
His bio is pretty irrelevant, it's written by people designed to make him look as good as possible. I did the research, and here's what I came up with and shared in a previous post:
"His defenses did very well at UCF. This year they were 3rd in Points Allowed in the American. In 2012 they were 1st in PA in CUSA and 29th nationally. Sounds great, right? Well in 2011, the year before he was on the UCF staff they were also 1st in PA. How much of their defense the last two years was based on what Fleming was doing and how much was him continuing the system George O'Leary already had in place?
Looking at his numbers from 2004-09 when he was DC at Akron is even more worrisome. In '03 Akron was 6th in conference. Fleming takes over and in 04 and 05 they're 7th. 06 they're 5th. 07 they're tied for 5th. 08 back to 7th and 09 they're 9th. Basically in 6 seasons as DC at Akron his defenses were average at best.
So we don't seem to be getting some kind of crazy defensive genius, he did very well at Sacred Heart but how transferable is that to the CAA, and he hasn't been a head coach in 12 seasons
Looking a little bit closer, I don't think he's ever been the head coach of a team that had scholarship football players until this year. He coached in the NEC in 2000 and 2001. They were definitely non scholarship in 1999. Sometime between 1999 and 2008 they allowed 30 scholarships, though I can't pinpoint when that change happened."
