Week # 9 - Games of Interest
Week # 9 - Games of Interest
Conference play is underway everywhere in College Basketball as we begin Week #9. Dayton gets its first ranking coming in as # 25 in the AP poll and gets significant votes outside the Top 25 in the USA Today poll. George Washington and Saint Joseph's get votes in the AP poll. GW also gets votes in the US Today poll.
Among URI OOC opponents, Maryland gets the #4 ranking in each poll. PC moves up to #8 in the AP poll and gets the #9 spot in the USA Today poll. Houston got some votes in the AP poll.
Cumulative record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 101-76, a winning percentage of .571, up over previous week and the highest since first week of season. American retains the ranking as the worst team on the OOC schedule with a RPI ranking of 332, Brown is next at 307, followed by Rider at 270 and Holy Cross at 228
Apart from a few stray OOC games usually involving Philly's Big Five, the OOC schedule is now complete for conference schools. The A-10 cumulative record in OOC play concludes at 112-56 , .666 winning percentage, slightly down from last week. The conference RPI remains # 7. La Salle with an RPI of 280 is the worst ranked A-10 team. Dayton is the highest at # 8.
While still early to have any real creditability, here are some URI rankings as of January 4:
RPI - 108
BPI - 65
KenPom - 64
Sagarin - 70
No A-10 games on Monday evening.
In games involving URI OOC Opponents:
* West Virginia at TCU. 7 PM. On ESPN2. TCU was drubbed in its first B12 game, so this is a big chance for the Horned Frogs to resurrect themselves.
* Niagara at Iona. 7 PM. Good chance for the Gaels to get their record above .500.
* Rider at Quinnipiac. 7 PM.
* Cleveland State at Detroit. 7:30 PM. On ESPN3
Other game of interest: #1 Kansas hosts #2 Oklahoma 9 PM. On ESPN.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
Another week, another big thanks to Obadiah for setting these threads up each time!
Rhode Island has an expected (end of regular season, PRE Conf Tournament) RPI Forecast of 70. It can very easily be swayed in either direction based on some swing games against quality teams.
With all URI's opponents already locked in until Brookyn, the only variables in RPI forecast are where URI wins and loses games.
Avoid home losses, and get some road wins. Enough of both will result in a sub 60 RPI heading into Brooklyn.

TCU leads #17 West Virginia, 47-45 at the half. WVU much bigger than TCU so they are getting more boards and in a very physical game, many WVU fouls. TCU is 22-25 on FT's in the first half alone. Jonathan Holton has 13 points with several nifty put backs.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
Go TCU! If they (somehow) manage to get their RPI down to under 100, (right now its 196) then our victory over them will add to our currently non-existent résumé.

Tonight's results in games involving URI OOC Opponents:
* TCU ran out of gas in second half to lose to West Virginia, 95-87. WVU was just too big and too deep. Holton finished with 15 points and six WVU players scored in double digits.
* Iona beats Niagara, 65-52. AJ English scored 21 points but had seven TO's.
* Quinnipiac edges Rider, 64-60. Rider continues winless in the MAAC.
* Detroit gets by Cleveland State, 88-80.

This OU-KU game has been some high level basketball, has a Final 4 feel to it. Very entertaining thus far.

Agree on KU-OU game -- Wayne Selden's game has come a long way. First two years he tried to get by mostly on physical superiority and athleticism, now has added more skills/finesse to go with his powerful build. We have a player who needs to have a similar evolution - Selden was more highly rated (I believe) and for him it didnt click until Jr year.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
With you on Selden BAR, definitely taken a step up this year. Seemed to disappear in games his first 2 years at KU if given a tough matchup with a physical team. It was too bad he picked up the 2 fouls in the 1st half too. He was clearly unhappy to be taken out of a game of such magnitude.

The atmosphere at this Oklahoma-Kansas game is outstanding- and that's even with the home team being down.
Ok, now they're tied.

Right you are Ace...I like non-conference and all, but college basketball unofficially begins to me when conference play rivalry games begin. I don't have a vested interest in either team or who wins, but anyone who's a fan of the sport should be glued to this game. Fantastic display of basketball tonight.

And VTech will pull off the upset...road games in conference are never a gimme, regardless of who you play.

Looks like it just might...and totally fine with it. One of the best games I've seen in recent memory.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
This will be an interesting test of the voters. Oklahoma should not drop in polls for losing on road at #1 team in 3OT, but I bet they will reflexively drop them a bit because they lost. I hate how they just form a line with teams based on number of losses and rotate them up as teams in front of them lose, but it is what they do.

Two important games on Tuesday's A-10 agenda. Besides URI hosting Richmond at 7 PM (on ESPNU), VCU travels to Philly to play a surprising Saint Joseph's team. Also, at 7 PM.
In games involving URI OOC Opponents:
* Marquette at #8 PC. 7 PM. On FS1.
* Tulane at Houston. 9 PM. On ESPNU.
* Nebraska at # 19 Iowa. 9 PM. On BTN.
Other game of interest: Temple at #23 UConn. 8 PM. On CBS Sports.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
VCU beats St. Joes at Hagan, 85-82. Miles was unreal in defeat.
How good is VCU this year?
Unfortunately, they might be mad when we come to town......
We can win that game though.
Let's see if we can play like this on the road. At home, could we actually go 9-0?
Twisted, Bentil is a beast. He almost won that game for them singlehandedly.

i didn't say anything about Bentil, just said it was great defense by Marquette on the last possession (I really only saw that 1 possession as I was watching URI)

VCU was down by 10 with about 5 minutes left in game and on sheer hustle and some SJU FT misses - the Hawks had four misses in that time frame- the Southern Rams grabbed the win.

Coming back to win in that gym is no small feat.
We are going to have to shoot our 3's well again to have a chance.
We now have seen how good we can be at home.[Not even at full strength either]
Now we need to play that way on the road. Going to be tough.

Also, Temple edged UConn, 55-53 on a Josh Brown jumper with 2.5 seconds left.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
Five A-10 games on Wednesday evening:
* George Washington at Saint Louis. 7 PM. The Billikens have lost their last two games, each by 28 points and are on a five game losing streak. It will be a challenge to turn that around against the Colonials. Not happening.
* St. Bonaventure at George Mason. 7 PM. The Bonnies continue a second season of surprising play. GMU has been good at home and owns two P5 wins whereas SBU has none. Will the home court be enough of an advantage to hand the win to GMU? I think so.
* Duquesne at Davidson. 7 PM. Pivotal game for both teams as they try to recoup from opening conference losses.
* LaSalle at Fordham. 7 PM. La Salle has disappointed so far and Fordham has been on the upswing and are keen on keeping the momentum going. Edge to Fordham
* UMass at Dayton. 8 PM. On CBS Sports. Apart from the Clemson win, UMass has a lackluster resume to date. Dayton has four P5 wins, the most notable one beating Vandy on their Nashville floor. Dayton should take this one.
In games involving URI OOC Opponents:
* Rutgers at #3 Maryland. 7 PM. On BTN.
* American at Bucknell. 7 PM.
* Colgate at Holy Cross. 7 PM.

Even if we don't win Sunday, I would like to see us play well.
We're doing it at home. Need to do it away too.

Saint Louis in an upset win over GW, 65-62. GW led most of the way and lost this game because of missed free throws . With GW leading by 2 points, Joe McDonald misses two FT's and SLU then puts in a three with 24 seconds and Guarino commits a turnover on the ensuing GW possession. SLU puts in two FT's to seal the win.

St. Bonaventure in an impressive win at George Mason, 73-56. Marcus Posley pours in 30 points. Win adds more credibility to the Bonnies' resume.
Also, Fordham comes from behind to beat LaSalle, 66-61.
Davidson over Duquesne, 77-66.

Re: Week # 9 - Games of Interest
TP, this St. Joes team is much better than last year's version.
Maybe not quite as good as people were thinking before they lost last night, but they had VCU beaten until they missed some FT's at the end.
Their defense isn't very good, but they can score with Bembry and Miles.
A lot of people think this will be a loss.
Believe it or not, I think we can win it. That's if the team that played St. Louis and Richmond shows up.
I don't know if GW losing tonight helps us. We will need wins against top 25 and 50 RPI teams, if it gets that far. Their RPI will take a hit, but at least it's a road game, so it could be worse.
Rhoomes for Fordham has really improved this year. He's going to be a load for our bigs to handle.

Schmidt is great at maximizing his talent, and this year with Marcus Posley, Dion Wright and Jaylen Adams he has real talent. Adams may be best PG in league by season's end. Bonnies are underrated.

Agreed. Posley was outstanding tonight. I think Adams gets overlooked because he ended last season with that hand injury, but he was a lock for all-rookie team before that.bigappleram wrote:Schmidt is great at maximizing his talent, and this year with Marcus Posley, Dion Wright and Jaylen Adams he has real talent. I think it does help...helps reinforce that Rhody can beat GW. Might be worth more in the individual game if they hadn't lost...but every time the top A10 teams lose and Rhody doesn't....should increase confidence for URI. Maybe URI is actually the best team in the conference....undefeated til they lose.rambone 78 wrote:TP, this St. Joes team is much better than last year's version.
