nice win....probably best win of the season so far (or TCU). The returning players are starting to look more like themselves, KI is solid, and CT is showing some life. 4 is in one heck of a slump...he is missing wide open shots and FT's. They theorized on the TV broadcast that he is no longer sneaking up on teams, and they are game planing for him.

I like watching a team where pretty much all 5 players on the floor are a threat to score. They look better every game. Was EC there?

Yeeeah...not even close to 5K. ESPN box score says 3,600. and, they also included this nugget in the re-cap:TruePoint wrote:I would be surprised and impressed if we got 5000. Such is the nature of URI fandom.
The Rams led 53-41 when Rob Gray Jr. scored 11 straight points and Houston closed to 57-52 with 2:50 remaining. Garrett made a layup and the Blackbirds hit eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

If Four is struggling because defenses are keying on him, that is still helpful to our offense.RIFan wrote:nice win....probably best win of the season so far (or TCU). Yea the shooter rep helps. Its probably why BB let Ebner kick the onsider.
Forcing the other team to prep for a lot is good. OR if you're great you just do what you do and thats enough(lightning in a bottle approach).

Back from the game.
Well, it's a win. Strange game.
I never recall so many of our guards in foul trouble
so early.
Free throws abysmal. Pretty bad when the FG% is better
than free throw%.
When Houston went to their zone, for a couple of trips
down, it looked like they were clueless.
As soon as they went high post inside the circle, they solved it.
I liked Iverson's aggressiveness on the boards and his hustle on defense.
He shows more and more of his game, as time passes.
Hassan was Hassan. Tower of strength.
Terrell played a solid game, especially on defense.
Jarvis only played 23 minutes, but did some nice things while in there.
Earl did well in his time in the game.Only player on the floor not
to miss a shot of any kind.
Thompson was in foul trouble and it hurt his playing time and
aggressiveness. He'll be fine.
Four struggles against quick players.
The kid grey scored 14 points in 20 minutes, despite foul trouble
holding him to 2 first half points.
Held them to over 30 points under their season scoring average.
Pretty impressive.
Students were there. It's funny, the section where the band is
made a ton of noise. The ones on the opposite side, not so much.
EZ Buckets needs to go yell at them once in a while.
Lousy crowd. I figured we'd get 4,000, and we didn't come close.
Kind of sad, but typical.
Nebraska Sunday.Should be interesting.

Spot on...our seats are right behind them...a silent bunch. Brutal. Seemed like they didn't even want to be there...either like they 'had to be there' for a class requirement, or, they weren't getting paid enough to make it worth their while. Kinda pathetic actually... Well, they DID show up at least...rodfromcranston wrote:Back from the game.

This deficiency is one of the main reasons this team will not beat many top squads. Part of the reason we were in the PC game was because we did not shoot a lot of ft's.

Good win, but FT's. Again. Hassan and KI. 1-8. At home. Incredible.
Well, everybody missed them.
On the road, folks, this will cost us.
RF1, correct. We've only lost 1 game so far due to FT's.
There will be more, especially in conference.

Ramulous - I've stopped yelling during free throws. Unfortunately a bunch of others have started doing it. I'm actively trying to stop them. It's never yelled until after the ball is released, but clearly isn't helping.
Rod - I've attempted on numerous occasions to try and get the other student section to stand, make noise...do anything and my efforts are usually effective for a few minutes until I leave and they stop immediately. I'm beginning to think that students purposely go to that section to avoid participating in any kind of cheering or excitement. Then again, that can be said for every other section in the Ryan Center besides the main student section at this point. It was PAINFULLY quiet tonight. It's a real bummer from my perspective.

There was only one game last year with attendance below 4,000 and that was the Iona NIT game where there were just a few days to sell every ticket. URI has had two games already this season under 4k. I am beginning to think attendance is headed for a dip this year. The OOC home slate average will be less (estimated to be off nearly 500/game from LY) and the A-10 schedule has a few less attractive home games this season. We averaged 5,404 for all of last season and are currently at 4,681 ytd. I had thought pre season that this might be a banner year for attendance. That is not looking very likely now.

Place felt dead. But a good win against a good team. Think we're all a little down from Saturday. I'm sure these small crowds drive Hurley nuts. Given how many free tickets float around it was probably 3,000 paid. Free throws? AGAIN AND AGAIN...

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
It is looking like full season ticket sales may not have seen a dramatic jump. The increased ticket sales that were bandied about may be more related to the mini package sales. Most people who had the mini plans probably had just the PC game to date which might help in later games. I however do not expect this team to get on an extended roll as it will probably be a roller coaster. This would mean no momentum which would in turn hurt attracting the casual fans. With attendance already down (7 of 17 games in), I think we will see it end up below last year's average of 5,404. It might even be possible that it falls below 5k. I personally never saw that coming a month ago.rambone 78 wrote:If this team struggles in conference things could get worse....sad to say.

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
Just got home from the game a little while ago. Traffic was brutal. What should have taken 75 minutes, took nearly 2 1/2 hours! I barely made tip off. A strange (to quote Rod) and ugly win, but a win none the less. I'll take it. I did like the play and honestly free throws (or lack there of) kept Houston in the game. Houston is quick! But we pushed through the foul trouble and closed it out. Other Rhody teams in past years may have wilted tonight. Not this one. Glad to see Garrett get back in the game. That was quite the "NOT AGAIN!" moment.

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
Negatives stated about attendance, crowd enthusiasm and free throws. Attendance is just going to be one of those things that will be what it will be. Those who predicted 4000 or less were right. Iona will be less than that.
Positive notes:
This is a game we could have lost but didn't.
Got down to 4 point lead late but we held tough and gutted it out
Good win following the disappointing PC loss
Beat a previously unbeaten AAC team that could have a descent RPI later in season
Held Pollard in check
While Christion Thompson continued to get good minutes and perform well for a Freshman, fellow freshman Akele was impressive with his minutes with 4 rebounds including 2 important offensive rebounds and a blocked shot. Akele was on the floor during some clutch late game minutes after Thompson fouled out.
Good coaching by DH subbing Akele on defense and Four on offense during last minutes.
On to Nebraska
Team adjusting well.
Conceivable that this team can grab wins at Nebraska, vs Iona and at ODU.
Go RHODY!

I concur with all of this. Glad I decided to go tonight. Could've done without the "here we go again" when Gray went on his run in the second half, but to be expected unfortunately.
Highlight of the game for me was first half when CT and Gray started getting a little physical and chippy. Gray was really calling for the ball and CT wasn't backing down. Then CT gets subbed for after a foul and in comes JT with such a look of determination and "now you got me guarding you mothafuka" on his face as he was eyeing down Gray. JT proceeded to dial up the intensity a bit, draw a quick offensive foul on Gray and get him sent right to the bench. It was awesome.

The only good thing about the poor attendance was I was able to enjoy the second half sitting 10 feet from Coach Hurley when it was clear many seats were not filled behind Steve and Don. It was an educational experience.

We held a team that had been averaging 90.8 points per game on 52.37% field goal shooting to 57 points on 40.35% shooting. What we do works. And it works better then whatever pretty much every other school does. I guess it's ok to play defense like we do once in a while.Shinze88 wrote:Houston goes to a zone defense and URI looks completely lost on the floor, I dont know why teams dont use zone defense on us more. ATP; Yes, the behind the Hurley standing position, bench, is a game within the game.....he does work hard for sure, sometimes over the top, often what you would want from your coach, always keeping the bench involved, is the coach on the floor, feels our pain on missed free throws, provides some humor; I sometimes wonder how Steve can do the broadcast with so much going on, including his work space often being invaded by the sideline storm that is Dan.....the refs handling the storm is also interesting to watch....people who sometimes get my seats come away and tell me much they enjoy those seats and relate a Hurley story, non of which I have not seen before....a re-seating of the building where I could loose those seats would be a major disappointment.... Go Dan!!

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
I don't think yelling at the students will help, frankly a lot of people get annoyed at EZBuckets and the yelling act. I think the problem is having a disjointed student section, selection of seats, plus it's a lot easier to make noise when you have a band plus double the students. The section at the URI bench side is what, maybe 250 seats tops? Even if you pack all those seats, 250 students won't get loud. And I think the students that want to be loudest get there early enough to be on the visitors side.rodfromcranston wrote:Students were there. It's funny, the section where the band is

The Ryan attendance problem is a mystery to me, EC or not. Maybe people don't enjoy the style of this team. Not to make excuses, but other schools have similar problems including Houston. Houston's first five home games against lackluster opponents drew 1223, 3163, 2332, 1974, 2089. This from a school with a substantial basketball pedigree, playing in a decent conference, currently building a beautiful basketball practice facility and with 40,000 students, 8,000 of whom live on campus.

The section at the URI bench side is what, maybe 250 seats tops? Even if you pack all those seats, 250 students won't get loud. made a ton of noise. The ones on the opposite side, not so much.
EZ Buckets needs to go yell at them once in a while.
I get stopped at every single game from appreciative fans young and old who appreciate what I do to inject some life into the students & crowd. Could they be blowing smoke? Maybe. All I know is that I love this team and put every ounce of energy I have into starting chants, generating excitement, and creating a home court advantage to give our guys an edge.
So once our fans actually show some emotion and cheer instead of sitting on their hands in silence, I will stop my "yelling act".
Edit - I've already replied in this thread about yelling during free throws...I stopped doing it. Others started it up again. I was actively pointing them out to stop last night. It's over.

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
A couple of thoughts regarding attendance last night. When I got there and saw section 208 only had a handful of people I knew attendance was going to be light. I actually think section 208 is over priced because I rarely see that full. I think they should just open that up to students instead of having them in 215 and 202 in addition to 201 and the section 100s. Basically, both backsides of the hoops should be full of students.
Speaking of students, marketing needs to do some survey research and figure out why they are not coming and what would make them come. They need to figure out the top 3 reasons and figure out the top 3 things they could do to encourage attendance. Obviously, on the surface, everyone is going to say win big games, get ranked, etc but that simply isn't all there is to it. If you look at the top 100 attended division I programs (http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketb ... d/2014.pdf) Rhode Island is comparable in terms of caliber to many of those teams. No reason we should not have as comparable turnout as UMASS. It's obviously easy for me or anyone else on this forum to argue what they URI should do, for all I know they could be doing this, but a little over 1000 students in attendance is a joke.

I appreciate everything you do each game. I never here anyone complain about your "yelling act". In fact, I wish you could come wake my section up. It's such a bore to be up there sometimes.EZBuckets wrote:RhowdyRam02 wrote:I don't think yelling at the students will help, frankly a lot of people get annoyed at EZBuckets and the yelling act. It's not even that. Beat Valpo, and if you got the win Saturday there would've been another 2000 people in the stands. I think people are over EC's injury...or at least come to terms with it. Even if we didn't beat Valpo, a PC win energizes this fan base. It's been 6 god damn years. At this point we're almost permanently the little brother in this state.Rhody15 wrote:The injury to EC is definitely having an impact on attendance. Sucks, but it is what it is.
This is just the same old story year in and year out. The fans who have seen it before are getting tired of it, and the fans who went to school in the 00's/Barren years never felt any connection to the team because they never saw a legitimate win period.
So yeah the EC injury sucks - but if you win big games people will show up.
It might not be fair to this team right now, but they have to understand what the majority of fans have been subjected to from well before their time. Just because a lot of things are different...when you continue to lose to your instate rival, lose every "big game" that is played, then couple that with the "family friendly atmosphere" that the Ryan Center so desperately wants...why the hell would anyone go to a game until proven otherwise?
And Buckets you're doing a hell of a job. It's heavy lifting to try and energize fans with all of the above that I listed. It's sad that they need you to get up for games, but they certainly need you. Keep it up.

EZBuckets are you allowed to invite the folks in the cheap seats down to fill in the seats behind the basket at halftime? IMO would help dramatically with the foul shots and long field goal attempts.
That is a black hole back there..... Brutal background for depth perception.
Oh and keep yelling I like it. I have sat all over the building and never heard a single complaint about what you do.

Re: Game 9: Houston at the Ryan Center 12/8 7pm on OSN
Actually, I should clarify. Dan was very intense but did not cross the line with the refs. He had a good working relationship with this crew, I thought. He was able to get explanations of calls which satisfied him and there was not much tension there (from what I observed close up in 2nd half).ace wrote:There are just so many ways to interpret that last sentenceATPTourFan wrote:The only good thing about the poor attendance was I was able to enjoy the second half sitting 10 feet from Coach Hurley when it was clear many seats were not filled behind Steve and Don. It was an educational experience.
I guarantee that some refs misinterpret Dan's shouting and "energy" as directed towards them, when usually he's talking to his team. His guys "get it".
Dan also beats up the padded scorer's table right where Stevie Mac sits, both for good and bad events in the game. He does a good job not knocking over his juice bottle and marker, however he did make the marker go flying on one occasion (after a Rhody And-1 midway through 2nd half).
Also, educational because I was able to hear all the verbal communication from Dan and Coach Carr, the scout for this game. Calling out screens and offensive sets, the coaches are always saying something. There was even a time after Hass was beat on the defensive end that Dan had to shout and remind #12 that his opponent was left handed like he was.
After a whistle, Dan is always coaching and supporting his players. He never missed a chance to acknowledge a player coming off the floor, even if it was after a mistake. Dan appreciated the effort of every Ram this night, as he expressed in his post game comments.
It's obvious to me why his players often speak of Dan as a father figure, in all the best ways.

UMass is not a good comparison. While you might think it would draw well given it has a larger venue (9,300) and twice the undergraduate enrollment of URI (with a much higher % living on campus), it is not typically the case. UMass has averaged 3,482 ytd in 2015-16 campaign (biggest crowd was 3,818). They averaged 4,533 in 2014-15. Their best recent year was 2013-14 when they went to the NCAA and averaged 6,600. Other than that one season, their numbers are usually below URI. The sellouts at the Mullins Center under John Calipari are long in the past. Only winning big fills the Mullins.BleedBlue87 wrote:No reason we should not have as comparable turnout as UMASS.

I find it funny that no one on this board has ever heard a criticism of EZbuckets, yet he was blasted on this very board before people realized he was a member.
