Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Verbal Commit)
Mark Aguirre and Adrian Dantley were both guys who were
chubby, and used their butt to create space.
Dantley got into great shape early in his NBA career,
but was a tub at ND.
Agree, undersized low post players, who use all of their
guile to score, are a lot of fun to watch.

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Verbal Commit)
He had such strength and iron will, that no matter how big
his opponent was, Big Step would wear them down near the end
of the game and win the battle.
I remember him going up against 7' Arthur Beatty of American U.
Beatty had games of 33, 29, 29 rebounds in a single game! He also averaged
22.0 ppg.
Stephanson dominated him. He was that good.

Yeah, I saw Adrian Dantley in a High School game in NJ against my old HS and he was about 6'4 and around 260 at the time. He was even more than chubby
at that time, but he was still athletic and used his weight to bull his way in and could shoot. Very hard to stop even then. Haven't seen Berry at all, but I'm
sure Hurley and staff will whip him into top shape. Hope he has the offensive skills to be more than a backup and minutes eater.

Seems he's been that and more……unless, there's a severe thyroid problem.

He looked thinner in JC than he was in that HS video.
Still has a ways to go, but he'll get there under Marshall.

I know. I just couldn't resist the "minutes eater" dangling there -- to be gobbled up, naturally.rambone 78 wrote:He looked thinner in JC than he was in that HS video.

In all seriousness, Marshall will do wonders for Berry's life, never mind just his basketball life. Imagine having a resource like Mr. Marshall!!!!

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Verbal Commit)
Difference between Aguirre/Dantley vs. Berry is that Aguirre/Dantley were 3/4 positionally both at the college and pro levels. Berry is going to be a 5 at college, no doubt about it. Aguirre was far more athletic and diverse in his game. Dantley had a little step-back, fade away from 10-12 feet away.
Berry will be/should be 5-feet and in for his shooting range. If he ever shoots from outside of the paint, put him on the bench.

He made some 10-12 footers in that JC video. He can also shoot FT's at better than 70%.
I agree most of his shots will be from close in, but once in a while....

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Verbal Commit)
Ummmmmmm, Adrian Dantley and Mark Aguirre were both Top-10 recruits during their respective high school graduating years, with games so far more developed than Andre Berry's that it's not even fair to talk about positions, per se. Also, to be noted Dantley was more of a hybrid 4/3 than a 3/4 for his height. Conversely, Aguirre was Carmelo Anthony before Carmelo Anthony….PlayMikeMotenMore wrote:Difference between Aguirre/Dantley vs. Berry is that Aguirre/Dantley were 3/4 positionally both at the college and pro levels. Also to note: Aguirre played in a McDonald's All-Star Game at the Civic Center his graduating year….
As Berry develops, becomes more muscular, well-conditioned for the rigors of the Hurley Experience and perhaps/hopefully develops his footwork and range, maybe he can become this team's version of "Where Did He Come From?!?!?!?!?" Kenny Green.
Yes, I know….one of the greatest Rams ever. And one of my favorites.
We all can only wish…...

Stop it. Kenny was long and had long arms.
He played above the rim.
I saw Aguirre in the PCC game. Kevin Whiting was the URI
representative in that game.
Again, people with big butts, using their bulk to make space against
bigger people.
Guess I should have put up a film of Charles Barkley as a prime example.

Maybe he can develop like Draymond Green, more of his physical kinship, which would be pretty awesome….If he were like Jumpin' Johnny Green…..or like Walter "Teach Me How To Run" Berry….

I would like Andre Berry to be as good as Walter Berry.
I know Bressler remembers recent Spartan Derrick Nix...he went from doughboy literally and figuratively (he went to Detroit Pershing HS Doughboys) to solid performer. Check out his before and after photos. This is the hope for Berry...see link below:

Not many will remember Andre Green, but when I was a student I played in a pickup game with him at the gym and he looked like Scotty Pippen playing against the guys from the dorms. It is easy to forget just how good these guys are compared to the average student in the intramural leagues.
I remember freshman Kenny Green being a little bit heavy. He really transformed himself to a chiseled athlete.

I talked to Andre's father a lot at the games. He did honestly feel that his son was better than anyone on the team. He wasn't obnoxious about it, though. I found him to be very nice. And, I really liked how he bragged about his son.

Andre Green was super smooth.....in layup lines.
That's about it. He contributed virtually nothing when given the opportunity to play, which wasn't often.

Green looked like a basketball player.
We had a guy who played on the Sly Williams' teams
named Derrick Groomes from Florida.
This guy was 6'8" and built. He looked like a poster
for what a basketball player should look like.
Like Green, he never did anything at URI.

I remember the impact Larry Farmer had on our bigs,
during the 97-98 season.
Hopefully, ARD will do the same for Hassan, Big Earl and Andre.
Wouldn't that be nice!

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Commit)
Ace, this was from Ramsey, posted on the QUADREE SMITH thread. Could you please shed some light on this. Obviously, if anyone else could, please do so…Thanks, Bressler.
"I said it before I will say it again. Berry is horrible. he is fat and way out of shape. couldn't even play for 8 min stretches last season. Since he arrived on campus 2 weeks ago. I have personally watched him get absolutely abused by not just Hassan, which is to be expected but by earl Watson and even Onyekaba has made this kid look like he has no business in D1 ball.
The sad part about it, is the fact that this is the exact type of recruit that Hurley has always railed against. Hes always maintained that he wasn't going to give up a scholly on somebody who was a total reach because we were desperate. Well that's exactly what he did and with a kid whos only got 3 years of eligibility left. that is probably the only good caveat is that he will only eat up 3 yrs instead of 4.
He will not give us anything on the court this year and I don't see him as being a contributor ever. Stanford robinson is more likely to get in the game this season then berry.
They jumped the gun because they felt pressure to get a big on the roster. well they messed up. ARD was disgusted with the kids effort the other day and sent him to the showers early when he couldn't even complete an hr practice without having to beg out and sit down.
Knee jerk reaction by a staff clearly worried about there biggest weakness. But at the end of the day, a 6'8 tub of lard doesn't fix our lack of a true big. just makes the spot more glaring. Kid has no hands, zero touch. Mike hart told me that Bonzie colson used to put up 40 and 20 on this kid in scrimmages by just wanting it more.
The worst part is, the staff put him up against ousmane ba and technically I guess Berry was slightly better. But they got to see what hes got and its certainly not worthy of where we are intending to be.
Hurley grew up in his fathers system. his father has always repeatedly won, not by having the best bigs but by having the best guards, the best defense and the most effort. mix in some court intelligence and that bob sr toughness and bang you got st anthonys. The season thought to be St. anthonys best ever was the undefeated season chronicled in Adrian Wojnarowskis "the miracle of st Anthony" as anybody who has followed the hurley family or read that book will know, the only big they had on that team was former St joes forward Ahmad Nivins who sat out the beginning of that season and wasn't even a starter as the friars won the mythical national championship.
Danny certainly had some good post guys at St benedicts like Tristan Thompson and even a couple 7 footers mixed in here and there but the bottom line is, this isn't high school basketball. We can make do by having the best guards in the league and the best power forward and will most likely run through the A10 but we will see what our true problems are if we can beat tcu and square up with Maryland.
Maryland goes: C-Diamond Stone 6'11 260, PF-Robert Carter 6'9 250, SF-Jake Layman 6'8 210 as starters with PF/C-Damonte Dodd 6'9 240 and C-Michal Cekovsky 7'0 240 coming off the bench. Plus they got a SG named Jared Nickens who is there first guy off the bench and is the size of our best post player at 6'7.
All this stuff about us not being able to recruit bigs is total BS every other school out there whether they are P5 or not seemingly has guys coming off the bench that are over 6'8 and can actually play. We aren't asking for the moon here. Damonte Dodd was a 3 star recruit rated outside of the top 150 and last year as a sophomore he played 15.8mpg and put up 4.2ppg 4rpg and 1.6bpg. These guys are out there we just aren't really looking for them and that's the bottom line.
We offer 10-15 PFs and Centers; well we offer over 50 Guards. They are starting to make a name for themselves as a team that potential Big-man recruits aren't interested in playing at. They see us as a place for guards to run the show. Adding ARD will certainly help that stigma but I really think the real problem is that Hurley and staff don't necessarily see bigs as being key to what we are doing. Guard mentality."

Bressler, I wouldn't be 100% convinced this is what I just wrote on that post:
Ramsey, what day was this workout you watched Berry get thrown out of? I know Hass pretty well and not only did he say that never happened, but he also said the guys haven't done ANYTHING head to head. Everything has been 1 on 0 or guard+forward pick and roll/pop situations with no defense or with coaches playing token defense. Not sure why Hass would need to make that up, or why you would for that matter. Personally I have no clue what the kid looks like, but I really don't care how good/bad he is right now. I'm more concerned with seeing the development of Earl and seeing how they use Iverson at the 4. I see the most likely situation being Earl stepping into Gil's minutes, Kuran getting TJ's minutes and more, and Iffy sliding into Earl's minutes with Berry taking a year on the bench like Iffy did last yr.

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Commit)
I've never personally seen Berry play, but I've got a lot more confidence in Dan Hurley's ability to evaluate D1 basketball talent than most of us who post on this board.
I agree with the idea of giving Berry an opportunity to work with Marshall and ARD and having patience to see how he evolves and develops. Geeeez, it's early June, he just transferred in, give him a chance to work on his game.
Plus, I'm pretty sure he's our very first recruit from St.Andrews, it opens up a new door for us to have him at URI and succeed here. It might lead to other St Andrews recruits.
Finally, if we're gonna take a chance on someone, a 6'8 kid on the 12th scholarship is the right way to do it. Me, I hope he works his ass off and becomes a major contributor for us. I'm rooting for you big guy!

Finally, if we're gonna take a chance on someone, a 6'8 kid on the 12th scholarship is the right way to do it. Me, I hope he works his ass off and becomes a major contributor for us. I'm rooting for you big guy!

Until proven otherwise, I put zero stock into what Ramsey sees or hears. I'll wait to pass judgment on Berry until I see him play for myself.bressler3south wrote:Ace, this was from Ramsey, posted on the QUADREE SMITH thread.

As a counterpoint to ramsey, who we know to be as reliable of a source as you can get, here is Brian Keiper on A10Talk on Berry:Billyboy78 wrote:Why don't we give this kid a chance to be with Marshall and get himself in shape instead of trashing him....sheesh.
I think I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach here, and not totally buy hype or hate on the kid. But seeing Berry's tape from juco would put me more in Keiper's camp, and I said that before we offered him.Andre Berry was a big fat kid who played basketball. Now he is a big kid who has gotten himself into much better shape and could be an absolute steal for Danny Hurley’s team. I saw where Berry was listed at 6-8 and 250 lbs. last season buuuuuuuut I think that weight may have been just a bit off....My guy is probably a biscuit away from 275 in that shot. The reason I even bring this stuff up is because the kid is really talented. As I watched some of his highlights and later a game tape, I came away thinking that he has nice hands and better than average feet for a kid his size. He could be an instant factor in the post if he can stay healthy and continue to work on his conditioning. (Emphasis Added)

Re: '15 JUCO PF - Andre Berry (URI Commit)
So, Keiper never saw anything more of Berry than we have.
Tapes. We know how incomplete these mix and highlight tapes are
compared to game tapes.
However, judgement can wait, until we see the actual player.
This isn't like a transfer whose stats could be scrutinized, and people who saw him
where he previously played, could tell us about him.

I basically agree with you, rod, but I also think that if the videos of Berry from juco showed him just crushing people and dominating with raw strength I would be more skeptical of carrying that over than seeing good footwork and soft hands. To me, that is stuff that can transfer - not to say it will be as effective at the A10 level as it was in juco, it just makes me a bit more optimistic.

K, I'm willing to see what Berry shows us,; but aside from us, who else recruited him? Has to mean something with so many schools looking for big men.
