That person couldn't sell URI... could he?
I feel he would be a good hire.

Rod, Cox may have more experience in game planning and coaching, but when it comes to recruiting, no comparison.

Anyway, that ship has sailed. Even if Carr were to leave, I doubt Preston would return, unless as the HC somewhere down the road....

Preston needs to be a first assistant somewhere, if he wants to be a HC. Here? Based on his pay at BC, he would take a pay cut.

Losing Murray isn't half as bad as losing Murphy. We'll be fine. Cox seems to be working out fine, I'm sure Dan will find a fine replacement. But yes, Preston was and is a better recruiter than Cox.

Um, Preston Murphy was ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH right here at URI!
I think that makes him first assistant somewhere.

Everyone knows how I feel about Preston, personally and
as a coach.
Still lives in Cranston, too.
Oh, yeah, I forgot, he's a URI guy, so he must suck, and we are being provincial
for wanting him here.

I know that he will make a great HC sometime in the next few years.

We could do a lot worse than hiring him after Dan leaves, whenever that is.

Maybe he will take a lower level HC job soon, and get experience so he could one day come back to us.

I know Thorr and Dooley like him too, so as long as they are here, it could happen.....

Luke was already ahead of Cox as the first assistant on game day. More games than not Luke was sitting next to Dan and involved in the time outs. Cox was typically standing on the outside with Carr and Iffy.

Judging by the recruiting pipeline, this is a substandard group of assistants , and losing Murray is losing the best of this group.

The way I look at it, DH needs 3 players and 3 assistant coaches at this time.

And, An interesting side note is does this mean that Mack is out of the Florida derby? Archie in the lead?

The person next to Dan most times is whoever had the scout for that opponent. They rotate that throughout the schedule. I'm pretty sure Luke's paycheck would disagree with who the top assistant was. He made well less than Cox does.

Rod my son and Preston's son are in the same class in Cranston. My son came home about two weeks ago and said Mr. Murphy is coming back to URI. I told him that was not going to happen. He got a job that paid more money why would he do that. He said I don't know Preston and I were talking about it at school.

Disano just posted an article with two potential choices - ARD and Jared Grasso (Iona). Grasso is an interesting choice- has recruited well to two less-than-sexy schools. Spent a year as a HC, great pipeline to NY/NJ/CT kids.

Preston has told me that his number one career goal is to
be HC at URI someday.
He needs to get a HC job at a lower level D-1 school or even
D-2, first.
Big difference being the face of a program, and being an assistant.
Unless you're Bobby, and catch lightning in a bottle,
working your way up the coaching ladder is awl parta da process.

I think Chris is just thinking logically.
Iona had some great under the radar talent. Their big guy
who was POY in the MAAC, would have made us a top 20 team.

Jared Grasso is a grinder and has great connections to NY/NJ. Also has some connections in the prep school league. Would be a solid recruiting hire. Don't know much about ARD as a coach, but if Hurley thinks he would be a good fit on the coaching staff I'm all in.

I'm intrigued by the Preston 2.0 comment. Can we get an assistant to the salary he's at? We all know he's a solid recruiter.

I believe I heard PM got $250k/year but also at least a two year commitment which is sort of rare on the assistant coaching trail. Really hard to see him coming back to URI for anything other than the HC gig.

Good point, but it seems to me that what the assistants get paid does not necessarily line up with who the head coach thinks is the assistant that he has the most confidence in.

I did not keep analytical track, but, it always seemed that Cox was not the person that DH was confiding in and strategizing with- rarely, if ever with Cox.

There are two positions open - ASSISTANT COACH & ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS.

Might it be a possibility that T.J. could be considered for the latter?

As for the Assistant Coach position, it is possible that Coach might restructure primary responsibilities with this upcoming hire. Absolutely no question we lost a lot when Bobby left, and we survived. Ditto for Preston......Our coach's energy level will overcome Cox leaving as well......What we have lacked mostly is salaries that are competitive for the Assistant Coach positions.

I'm not close with the uri basketball team or athletic department but I believe the person that fills that director position is usually overqualified generally. I think it is more coordinating and logistical support.

He could prob be a GA for 1-2 years and the. Take on one of those support not actually assistant coach spots. Then vault out of there to a assistant coach spot here or with a Hurley disciple 5-6 years from now.

Accurate? Idk that's my take.
