I'm pretty sure Dan wants to win. He wants to be in the tournament. He should get there next year staying here. No chance at STJ next year. nor the next.

Good to see Donaldson, who's usually a season behind, is right up to date on this one.

Donaldson and the rest of the blowjo staff will become irrelevant staring Monday. The doubling of the daily paper to $2 will absolutely crush the paper.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
What does that have to do with Dan, stopping a rumor if he is not interested in the job? Unless you are suggesting since he doesn't make as much as Smart (who has a final 4 vs one NIT win) and he should be using job offers for leverage with URI...which I don't necessarily disagree with, but we just did this last year...are we going to do it every year?ATPTourFan wrote:Right, cuz Shaka and Dan are at the same level in their careers and compensation right now.RIFan wrote:All Dan has to do is what Shaka Smart does...as soon as a rumor is out there, he shoots it down.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
The difference is that we've already seen this before a few years ago. All this leaked info is being intentionally leaked. Do you remember how Dan's "interest" in the Rutgers job was turned into charters, training table, and salary increases for his assistants? It's smart business to use the pressure of another school to ensure that you maximize your commitment from your present school -- especially if you do want to stay.RIFan wrote:What does that have to do with Dan, stopping a rumor if he is not interested in the job? Yup, and some other goof talked to someone who talked to someone
who owned the Vitamin Water thing and he said that it's Dan's job
if he wants it.
So, there you have it! Done deal.
We've got to get a Cooley to Tennessee rumors going.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Is it just me or would it be strange for a guy (Danny Hurley) to accept the head coaching job at his arch rival from his playing days? Now I know his time in South Orange was somewhat rocky but the visual of him coaching against the Hall twice a year just doesn't seem right. I don't see this happening and I think he waits for the right P5 job to open up that pays a lot more...

Not sure his love for Seton Hall is as deep as some think, his playing days there were tumultuous. To me SJU is much more appealing to him than going back to where he played.

Hey, if he leaves, he leaves.
As always, not a blessed thing anyone writing on a message board
is going to change anything.
However, we are entitled to think and discuss whatever we want.
IF it happens, I'd hope Thorr and Dooley identify their top candidates and
move quickly.
My guess is, the list would be pretty similar to when
CFL got canned. The same array of NY area coaches.
As I said, I'd grab Preston to keep the guys that are here and also
keep the Expressions Elite connection.
We'd also be back in business in Michigan.

Since I already mentioned it agree on Preston....I believe he could keep this squad together tho dunno about Iverson...
I am more worried about Texas. Impossible to say no to that money and Austin is fantastic, great city.

If Texas hired Dan, there'd be riots in Austin.
We know and like Dan, but the resume is pretty light.
Barnes took two teams to the NCAAs before he was hired
by Texas.
Before Barnes, they hired Tom Penders, fresh off the Sweet 16.
Texas will bring is an big name or someone with a proven track record..

I hear that before the season ended, there had been interest from coaches who now see the Rhode Island program as ripe for quick and sustainable success. I would trust Thorr/Dooley are prepared for either outcome.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Of course, I'm concerned about him leaving but I just don't think SJU is the right fit for him.
Now, I appreciate what he's done with our program but he hasn't even been to the NCAA yet. Imagine what the interest level will be when he achieves that? I hate to say it but unless he's a different kind of guy, I don't think he's long for Kingston.
Regardless, this yearly coaching carousel is growing tiresome with these mercenary coaches saying one thing about loyalty and contentment and then selling out to the highest bidder. And who are the biggest losers in this rat race? Players and fans.

I hope you are right Rod....but once the zeppole is in the display cabinet it looks pretty good.
Just a few hours and Hurley talk is on fire, Dan is on display..... now every big money power job that comes up is going to have Hurley talk.
Thorr should be on the phone with Preston now IMHO....off the record of course.
It is time to hire a hot coach who will stay and win.

IF this happens, I'd want someone who isn't going to be sniffing around every
spring for leverage of to leave.
Bring in Preston, hire ARD, who wants to be here, get some older guy.
Work the hell out of recruiting.
Make it work.
Iverson would have to transfer AGAIN, so, he's stuck here.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Some years ago, Louisville put $1 million aside. If Denny Crum stayed 10 years, he'd get the money. Let's take $2 million of the money we piss away on football every year and give that money, plus accrued interest etc., to Dan after he stays for seven years.

I hope he puts this to bed very soon.....I don't need anymore stress in my life. I just don't understand why coaches like Archie Miller/Shaka Smart aren't being mentioned. Dan needs to stay and get things accomplished here!

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Even if we pay Dan $1m and give all the assistants pay raises...this will be an annual ritual until he leaves, or if he doesn't live up to his potential...There will always be schools who can pay him more, with more/better resources and facilities.
" I just don't understand why coaches like Archie Miller/Shaka Smart aren't being mentioned. " - I was thinking the same thing.

It's simple why Smart and Miller aren't mentioned, it's because St John's has zero shot to land them. This isn't a big time opportunity. Now could the right coach turn it into one, sure but it isn't right now.

I am going to be pissed if he leaves.. I want this program to finally become a solid program with a chance at the big dance every year. If we are just going to be a stopping ground for young coaches with higher aspirations it will never happen.. A10 as a league needs to find a way to bridge the gap financially between the supposed great Big East (which really isn't that great) and itself.

I'm concerned, of course, but you have to realize we're seeing the echo chamber effect .... one paper speculates, everyone else jumps on it by citing "reports" ..... making it look like there's more sources. Same thing with fans .... one person worries and a bunch of other chicken littles jump on the fear wagon.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Look, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried. That said, taking over Big 10 bound Rutgers after his first year here seems like a better move for him than taking over St. John's now that we're on the precipice of something big. He stayed then and I'd like to think he'd stay now instead of bolting for what's a lesser opportunity in my eyes.
As for Texas, Dan isn't on that level yet, without a tournament appearance. For all the cackling from PC fans about Don't potential departure, I would think Cooley would be a potential target for Austin.
As for why aren't Shaka or Miller mentioned? Frankly, St. John's is beneath those guys, based on their track record, jobs they've previously turned down and jobs they could get.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
The old timers like myself are used to this. Every time this program is on the verge of sustained greatness, something happens. It happened in the late 70s. It happened in the late 80s. It happened in the late 90s. And we're not even at that level yet this time, but I think we'd all agree, we're heading in that direction. This would once again put it to a screeching halt. Yes, the program would go on, maybe have to rebuild again, but the momentum Dan brought would end. It's happened before.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
The odds of us finding sustained success without that one special coach staying and building a solid foundation and reputation for the school for a good 7-10 years will be very hard.ram1980 wrote:I am going to be pissed if he leaves.. Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
I told myself this last year with the Rutgers stuff and I am sticking with it this time around. I just don't believe Dan Hurley is going to look EC Matthews and Hassan Martin in the eyes and say "sorry guys, I'm outta here." Maybe he'll prove me wrong, call me naive if you want, and I get that it's a business and coaches do this all the time, but I still just don't believe that THIS coach is going to do it to THOSE guys.
