If You Could Add Any Former URI Player To This Team.........
who would best complete them? Odom could play the #3 or #4 and fit well into this team. Wheeler would give us an outside threat and handle the rock like a pro. Kenny Green would enhance the great D

Yeah wouldn't mind having Jimmy knocking down some 3's. Not sure if he'd be the top choice though given the current lineup.

Wow, you can tell this is a post Keaney Gym era board for the most part.
I'll take the incomparable Sly Williams.
He could do it all, only better than anyone I've ever seen in a
Rhody uniform.
Next would be Kenny Green, best big man in URI history.
He was also a complete offensive player.

Odom or Sly 1st
Jimmy Baron's shooting would be great on this team but on the defensive end?
3rd choice is a tie between Marcel Momplaisir and Steve Mello

I would lean towards something we don't have - a 3 point guy, or an inside threat.
But not give up our defensive identity.
Leaning towards the Kenny green, Luther Clay, Mike Andersen route.
As much as Jimmy Baron would give us the offense from (way) beyond the arc, his defense was suspect.

second. Hurley may not be the x's and o's guy Harrick was...yet (not many are) but the program is in a much better place than it was with Harrick here. Hurley is 5 years into coaching this level. His improvement is far beyond noticeable. Who knows where his ceiling is now that he's started to get his players (year 2 right now).bressler3south wrote:GY=URI wrote:I would take present team with Harrick and Farmer coaching.

Better yet it has a chance to be sustained for a long time. This program now has things we never would've had with anyone else. I'll stick with dan.

I'd go in a slightly different direction. I would pick a person who was a total team player that fit this year's team. A person who shoots, rebounds, passes and certainly cares more about winning than individual stats. My choice is Michael Brown.

Jimmy could never play in Hurley's system. No defense.
Sly did everything, and was a double digit rebounder.
If someone could have one player, it wouldn't be Michael
Anderson or Luther Clay.

But if you want more size, then Kenny Green is the way to go. Him and Hass together in the paint? WOW!

Terence Grier could have played DB in the NFL. I thought he was freakishly athletic.
I would pick a guy from below the top tier. Delroy would fit right in with these kids. He was also very personable. These guys are tight.

Re: If You Could Add Any Former URI Player To This Team.....
Given the make up of this team, I'm taking Jimmy all day.
We have inside presence and strong guards who dribble drive. We also see a lot of zone and teams pack the middle and dare us to beat them outside.
With Jimmy getting basically double teamed, that opens huge gaps for Terrell and EC to get free drives to the rim. It also opens up Gil and Hassan on the boards and the post for easy points.
Not to mention the points Jimmy would provide.
With a shooter of Jimmy's skill the defense would not know which to take away, and in turn would take nothing away.
His benefits would also far outweigh his lack of defense. this team is strong enough on that end to compensate.

I don't believe Harrick had any intention to stay and make us a perennial contender though. That's my only point. He was always going to use us as a stepping stone.rodfromcranston wrote:Um, Harrick didn't have the Ryan Center, and yet had a top 5

Other than that. I agree 100% with Blue Man's last post.
I think Hurley wants to make this his program. If given the choice between the two, I would take the unknown ceiling and exponential upward trend, which could very well see elite 8 runs in the not so distant future, over Harrick's 2 years.
Granted if better coaching decisions were made post-Harrick, who knows what would have happened, and hind sight is 20/20.
Also, I loved Tyson Wheeler, he made my childhood - but I really believe Jarvis will be a better PG than him when it's all said and done. He may not have the shot that Tyson had out of the box, and Tyson's handle would legitimately break ankles, but the trend Jarvis is on for a freshman starting his 10th game tonight is absurd.
There is a chance, by their senior years (if they stay 4), that the best 3 guards to come through the program at URI could be on this team in the 2016-2017 season.
We really are coming into the golden age of URI Basketball.

Doubt any of the three will be in Silk Owens' class.
He was clearly the best for most of us who watched him play.
Just a superb scorer,2,114 points, and check out some of the Syracuse highlights to see
him slick passing.
He was also a tough defensive player, which Tyson wasn't.
He was so cool, he slept on the bus ride to the Dean Dome.
Nothing phased him. Mentally so tough. Played with a bullet in him.

Just remember, Silk Owens was a point guard on a team that also had Tommy Garrick and Kenny Green, so he was far from the only scoring option. And yet, he still scored over 2000 points and is still our all time leading scorer.

Eh, we generally don't care what people post, from a moderator standpoint. However, I imagine that fellow posters would take issue with you 1) starting a thread that highlighted a student-athletes shortcomings and 2) came at a time when the program was on the upswing. For what it's worth, yes, Clarke and Francis are probably the worst regular starters I ever saw in person. The only other contenders would probably be guys from the Jerry Duh years, and temporary injury replacements.scine20 wrote:I don't want to be mean but Jon Clarke HAS to be the worst starting player that the school has had since moving into the Ryan Center. As much as I like Silk, I would take Sly or Kenny, for this particular team at this time. Two of the best that ever put on a Rhody uniform. There are many others that you could make a case for, especially if you go position by position, but at this time I like either of those guys.

I'm def in the Jimmy Baron camp.
That's our achilles heel, shooting. Imagine teams having to respect us from outside, we could whip the ball around and get it to Hassan, SLAM. Or, work it down then kick it out, THREE!

As much as we all (me included) used to talk about Jon Clark(e), I always felt a little sorry for him. He was what he was. He was a good kid who did his best. He definitely shouldn't have been a 4 year starter. It's baron's fault for not being able to recruit better.
Pappy Owens would be in the discussion for the best 2 guard if he played that position for 4 years. He's already one of our best all around players. He seemed to play every position because of the team he was on. Such a waste.

He did go to Vermont and lead the country in rebounding. The fact that CPK (this will be a thing) had Holm behind Jon Clark speaks volumes about Baron's talent evaluation/player development.Da_Process_Survivor wrote:
