Not at all, I love Preston, always will.
But good journalism to me would be to have an up to date picture - had nothing to do with Preston in fact he looks great in the picture.
Here we are with just a few games left in the 2014-2015 regular season and the NYDN has to go to their library or the internet and get some picture more than a year old - looks like UMASS people in the stands - might not even be in our building. Pretty weak imho.
No big deal.

I hear what you're saying.
Why does every picture of Dan, look like
he's a screaming mimi?
I know he smiles sometimes. Even sarcastic smiles
to the refs.

I suppose they could have put a picture of him with the Wagner team and staff.
Again, not a big deal, but good journalisam to me is in the details and putting up a picture more than a year old just is not very good. Sure it's the least important think, but maybe to a current assistant URI Coach who is riding along and helping to make things happen with a school knocking at the door of the NCAA Tournament for te first time this century it's not so least important.

I was among the most upset posters that Preston went to BC but now I don't think a year later he should be in URI Bench picture.

only my opinion

Most people who do see the picture, will have no idea who our assistants are.

Maybe they knew that, so they used whatever they had available.

Of course we know, but do they care about that?

Here is a great article just out today:

I Love this Quote:
"I'm a fixer," Hurley said. "I enjoy fixing things that are broken and Rhode Island was 7-24 program with major APR problems that was devoid of talent and outdated in terms of facilities. There wasn't a part of the program that was in good shape."

For what it's worth, photo credit on the NY Daily News site was for one of their photographers. Looks like it was taken during the game at Barclays against UMASS last March. Probably used this image since it had Dan, and they took it (prevents them from having to pay for an image from Getty, etc.)

As a URI fan, I'm not the biggest fan of that quote. Common wisdom around here is that Dan won't want to leave for another rebuilding job after what he went through to get our program on track, and the "I'm a fixer" mentality doesn't really agree with that. I really don't want to get into that discussion again, but I thought this was an interesting quote to pick out and say you enjoyed. Otherwise it was really nice article. We are really getting a lot of great exposure over the last month or so.

This part of the quote was the part that I enjoyed.

I did not even pick up on the fixer part - I don't worry about whether he stays or goes - whatever happens, happens - no need wasting my time worrying about something completely out of my control.

The only good thing about the program Dan inherited, was the RC.

As for the "fixer" comment, I wouldn't read too much into it. We're not where we want to be yet, and I think Dan stays until we have become that VCU-like power of the A10.

And maybe longer, hopefully a lot longer. But who knows?

I also think Dan inherited in addition to the RC:
- A very supportive University President
- A very supportive and continually improving AD in Thor
- A fan base hungry for an NCAA bid and hungry to beat a Top 25 team

It was a shame that Coach ______ was never able to fully leverage such a fantastic facility as the Ryan Center. Just imagine what Jim Harrick or Dan Hurley would have done with the Ryan Center from day 1 - and not Jerry D or Coach ________. Whoever said what would a top recruit ever chose URI over the bigger programs - simple answer - the Head Coach

There is now a deal for 2 tickets for 20 dollars in the 300 sections. I know it's still early, but tickets don't seem to be selling at all. These kids deserve a huge crowd. What does it take to sell this place out? Especially on pink out night!

I was told by someone in the athletic department today that they expect to be near a sellout, if it isn't sold out. You will get a walk-up gate on Wednesday and student turnout will be strong.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is at least a UMass-like crowd, but fans (especially "fringe" fans or casual fans) are also generally slow to invest. As RF1's data in the other thread shows, the fans are already starting to come back, but there is a little bit of a lag effect. It can take winning over a long period to get support to the level that everyone is happy with - not just at URI but in most places.

Still, I think there will be a very good-to-great crowd Wednesday night.

It would have to be a sellout! The students will be all up in the RC. Would just need a few thousand more.
Gotta start the seat counting stuff. It might be as hostile if not, more hostile than anywhere else they've played.

Yea give URI a coach with a pulse and the team will generally play good basketball.

Have a exciting team so far. Would like to call them special, but when you have some history I guess that must be reserved for actually making it places.

Some of the Davidson stats in posts on the 1st page of this thread could be building DU up a little too much. To me the posts made it seem like Rhody will have to do everything right to have a chance.

1) DU is going to score so many points how is Rhody going to keep up:
DU has scored significant points in blowouts of weak teams that has brought their avg ppg up more than most high scoring teams - 102 vs Catholic, 95 vs UCF, 90 vs Stetson, 110 vs Montana, 89 vs SLU, 95 vs Duq, 92 vs GM. In Feb they have scored 61 vs Bonnies (loss), 65 vs GW, 77 vs LaSalle, 76 vs Fordham.

2) DU is going to outscored us from the FT line - they shoot 72%!
URI has made 403 FTs this year. Davidson has made 315 FTs.
Davidson shoots 6% better than URI
URI shoots avg of 24 FTs/game to Davidson's 18
So even if both teams go to the FT 26 times, the 6% shooting difference is 1.5 points.
This doesn't even factor in that URI is shooting 75% in last 6 games (126 makes) and DU is shooting 71% the last two months.

Davidson has lost at home to Bonnies, at St Joes, at Rich and at VCU.
We can beat them.

Being harsh on Davidson has been my shtick, but they do deserve respect. They've been a good program for a long time and they've way exceeded expectations in their first A10 season. But, I do agree with Rhody83. This Davidson team is not a juggernaut. They are a skilled, well-coached team. But we can beat them. We match up well with them in my opinion.

This deal is online only and expires at 2pm this afternoon. The way they described it on the coaches show last night is it's $10 per ticket as long as you get at least 2, so 2 for $20, 3 for $30, and so on. There is a promo code to take advantage of it, I can post it later if anyone isiinterested in the deal. I tthink it's 2for20.

I've watched Davidson play about 5 times this year they will definitely be the best offense we have faced possibly all year....Expect lots of screens, picks, back door cuts and decent offense in the post... they have a lot of accurate long range shooters. We shouldn't double anyone downlow... they definitely are not as athletic as us though and I feel like Gill and Hass will be able to control the paint...

its pretty simple if we can stop them from shooting lights out which they do a lot we will be able to pull this out at home.... Our defense will.win this for us... I think we win by two!

We have a one of the point 3 point % defense in the country, so I'm hoping we can keep their 3's to under 10 made / under 30% for the game. If we can do that we'll have a great chance to come out on top.

Oh we can certainly beat them, but worth noting that their PG Gibbs missed quite a bit of time over the last 2 months with an injury. He's back now.

The numbers that comfort me are the fact that their D is worse than our O.

249th in points allowed 68.8
250th in blocks per game 2.8
303rd in steals per game 5.2

vs

163rd points per game 68.0

They don't force a lot of turnovers - which is a win for us.

They rebound very well for not a very big team, that is one of the battles that will be key. That and our 3 point defense.

Their resume isn't overly impressive - 2-3 vs the top 50 (home v Dayton, @ UMass wins), 3-1 vs 51-100 (blowout loss @ Richmond), 3-2 vs 101-200 (home v Bonnies, @ St Joes). 10 wins against 200+. They're 7-4 on the road.

Ours - 1-4 v top 50 (UMass), 3-0 vs 51-100, 3-2 vs 101-200 (GT neutral, @ St Joes), 11-0 vs 200+. We're 12-1 at home.

We're 8-2 in our last 10, they're 7-3. They haven't played a top 50 team since Jan 20th.

Add in the fact that we're at home, in front of what will be the toughest road environment they'll play since early January at VCU, and I don't see a way this game is close.

Can't really use too many per-game stats when teams to play at different tempos.

Right, Blue Man! I was thinking that they have to guard us, too.
It's not going to be an entire game on Davidson's side of the court,
like some appear to be making it seem.
Their guards aren't just 5'11" and 6', but they're thin.
Most of the team goes 180lbs to 210lbs.
I wonder how they'll stand up on both ends of the court to our
hammer throwers.
We should be able to kill them inside.
Of course, much depends on the refs. If they let players play,
it favors us.
If they blow their whistles every ten seconds, that's a problem.

This will be the toughest test yet for our excellent perimeter defense. Switch on everything, especially with the guards. Be careful about helping too much from dribble penetration - better to give up a contested look at the rim from a guy who might be looking to pass than a wide-open 3.

Benchmarks for winning, need to hit on most (not all) of these.
-8 or fewer 3ptrs allowed
-Less than 14 TOs
-70% FTs
-35% 3pt
-14 or more TOs forced
-Three of EC, Hassan, Jarvis, Jared in double figures
-Fewer than 7 offensive rebounds allowed

I don't know what you're looking at. There are tons of seats left.
