It seemed like they were able to get good shots all day against a good defensive team. That has to be progress. Last season they struggled to do that almost every game other than what x could get for himself.

Yeah I like the idea of Watson getting more minutes.

I thought the crowd today was decent considering students are on break.

These games are great to be at when I can, but I really feel old when I find myself complaining about the noise of the bumpin club music during every time out, I'd love to be able to converse during the breaks in action

“I can tell you early in the season I would try to hunt shots,” Matthews said. “I’ve never been that type of player. I’m coming out and letting the game come to me.”

Love that quote! That's how you play ball. Don't need to force things. Smart guy.

That was awesome. That play and his face in a pre game video. Or a mid game pep up video, show the block and then his face.

I can't nitpick when they win. That's basically what I post about. If they win, that's all I ask for. I'm holding my breath now.

Garrett will start. This staff has a pretty good record of developing young talent, maybe trust them on this.
Amen! At the beginning of last year people begged for more EC and Hassan and were wondering why they weren't playing more. As the season progressed they got more time in positions were they were more likely to succeed. If there is one area where this staff has excelled in it might be breaking in talent, even more so than recruiting

I don't think we played particularly great today, and that makes me happy. One of the things that I feel separates a good team from an average at best team is what do you look like when you don't have your best stuff. The defense was very good as usual and the free throw shooting was much improved. They also did a very good job at the beginning of the first half of scoring inside. That said, I feel there is plenty of room for improvement offensively. They especially struggled when Detroit pressured them at the half court line. Even when they were successful in breaking out of that pressure it seemed to hurt their half court offense. To get a convincing win over a team that I feel would be middle of the pack in our conference when we have room for improvement has me very excited for the rest of this year.

"We didn't play particularly well"???????????
What game were you watching?
This was our best game yet this year.
Also, as far as Garrett starting or not starting, as
Red Auerbach used to say, "It doesn't matter who starts. It's who's
on the floor at the end that matters,"
I don't get what's with Gil's poor play. It's his senior season.
Time to step up, not wilt.

I really wish our fanbase starts to get louder. Sometimes I think I should bring an oxygen tank in to revive some people. And with a half empty RC, I don't get people leaving early. Trying to beat the non traffic?

And I agree this was one of our best games. Detroit was really determined to win this one and we stepped up and defended our court. Great win and a great way to go into the break.

Late in the game, two old guys decided to have a stand up conversation,
totally blocking the line of vision for a bunch of fans.
Despite several of us yelling, "Down in front!", it went on
for about fifteen minutes.
Pretty damn rude.
Oh, I've continued my 0 for 2014-15 season without anyone occupying
the five of six seats next to me.
I wonder if they're someone's season tickets and they just are no shows?
I'm taking the midgets to the Brown game, and I'll bet this will be the
one time someone else has those seats.

Also after the play there were several body bumps between the two with Martin refusing to be the last guy to bump. The refs had to step in between the two. Martin is one tough character. I thought it might come to blows at one point and apparently the ref did too so he stepped in. Good job by the ref to see it coming, and to step in and as a result neither guy got a technical foul. Ref let is go just long enough.
Amazing block by Martin and amazing shot of RoadyJay - get that picture on a poster RoadyJay.

Amazing, how when we lose, the game thread goes on forever.
We get a nice win, and it's a big yawn.
After the last three years, every win should be special, especially against

People mostly come here for info and to complain. If the team wins and you watch it, what's to say?

Lots of good things out there. Some stuff bothered me, but I shut my mouth when we win.

I did think dan was playing with fire early when he pulled Hassan Martin in the first half. Martin was dominating and we coulda blew it open. I was scared. Then quieted by the victory.

Funny that it seems Jarvis has taken enough steps forward that him and Terrell are neck and neck in their development.

Really watching this whole team closely and wondering what will happen. Nothing is a given with kids being kids. Hope they all play out the whole year and continue to get better while posting victories.

I am very happy with our performance overall. Detroit was definitely a legit team. I thought we won primarliy because we wore them out defensively in the second half. Phenomenal games for TJ, EC and Martin. Big game and Gil lays an egg. Luckily others stepped up but it is unbelievable to me how Gil as a senior is performing. We need him to be playing significantly better, especially as a senior. He is not showing any leadership nor is he playing with any fire out there. Earl needs more minutes

Rod if you are first row 207 then the first 4 or 5 seats to your right are not season tix. They are open and classified as obstructed view so maybe that's why they don't get filled.

Good win for Rhody. Detroit was a decent team. Glad for the guys to get a win before Christmas!
I think it was a "decent" win, but I'll be much more high on the team as a whole if they can beat VCU.
Thus far, I'd say the team looks like it would have a shot at making the NIT, but I'm not going to start saying they're NCAA bound until the good free throw shooting continues, the 3pt shooting improves, and the point guard play & ball distribution/assists improve. I'm confident the team will improve in these areas as the year progresses, but to what degree...we'll have to wait and see.

Rhody has seven wins so far. The margin of victory for each is: +40, +16, +4, +22, +32, +39, and +14.

They absolutely should have destroyed a few of those teams by that much. I think that the overall large margins of victory, though, kind of mask the fact that they have handled some solid teams very easily.

Agreed. I don't think Southern Miss is very good, but they are legitimate enough of a program that beating them by 32 in their building is notable. Beating Santa Clara and Detroit soundly are good signs.

If nothing else, I appreciate your optimism! Can you imagine this place (not to mention the mood around the team) if they would have lost yesterday and then there was a week and a half until the next game?

Practice tomorrow and then the guys get out of town, have the week to spend with friends and family, and get back with plenty of time to prepare to end the OOC schedule with a win against Brown.

Speaking of Gil, maybe Dan or maybe TJ will have a heart to heart with him sometime during the break.

Just about everyone is busting their ass out there, and improving, some more than others of course.

I'm not going to say he's loafing, but it doesn't look like he's playing with much intensity.

If this team is going to go anywhere, meaning beyond an NIT bid, Biruta has to start bringing his A game consistently. He can't just turn it on or off.

Lack of confidence shouldn't be an issue with him, but it looks like it is.

Gil and Hassan have all the physical tools to be a very formidable A10 front line. Gil is our best back to the basket player, and is an above average passer for a big. I agree, we need him to be playing at full potential for this young team to reach its full potential.

Away from the laptop for the weekend, and I hate typing on my phone.

Make no mistake, Detroit is a tough team. Had a lead on Wichita St late, had a close one to UCF, and Howard Jr is a player.

Most impressed with the halftime adjustment of putting TJ in to shut down Howard. Game, set, match right there. He had maybe 1 good look...MAYBE one in the 2nd half. He killed us in the first. Had one basket in the final 2 minutes. TJ made him irrelevant. Kid can lock down anyone in the country.

It's nice to see that we are a team that can beat lesser teams soundly. Detroit is tough but this is still where we should've wound up. A convincing win by double digits. Great to see us making these changes.

While I know we've all been calling for Garrett to start, biggie played his best of the year. It's clear Garrett has more upside, but it's great to see that Biggie played a good game up there. It just makes everything better when biggie can play well.

Terrell is a freshman for sure, will make some freshman mistakes - like committing to driving to the lane no matter how many people are in front of him, from outside the 3 point line, and not looking up once. He will grow out of that, he just needs to adjust to the fact that he can't outmuscle everyone at this level like he could in high school. Granted he's bigger than a lot of other guards now, but it's still a different level. Love his confidence though - he doesn't get scared, doesn't hang his head when he makes a mistake...just gets pissed and makes things happen. I think he's going to get it together like EC did down the stretch last year, especially now that EC has planted his flag as our scoring guy.

Speaking of Elbert. Wow. Had an awful first half - though he was looking to make the extra pass...maybe even too much. He found a groove and that balance in the 2nd half. Hold on to your butts A10...this kid is going to run through you like shit through a goose. He's also shooting 38% from deep, certainly not elite, but serviceable enough to force people to respect it.

Speaking of 3 point shooting...what the hell is up with Butler? He played legitimate minutes and passed up 3 wide open shots. Wide open. Like they could've used the space and time he had for marketing promos. I assume Dan was trying to get him going...but he seems scared to shoot. Which makes no sense because I thought that was the only reason we have him? I hope he finds some confidence soon because having a shooting specialist who doesn't want to shoot on the floor is a bit of a problem.

As for the inside game...very clear that Hassan Martin is a man. Certified. He might be listed at 6'6 (maybe 6'7? He's young and growing...) with his arm length and his ups - he might as well be 6'10. Dear God is he something special. He missed a couple of bunnies in the game, but damn. As impressive as that swat down to the depths of hell was..more impressive was the block to TO to 2nd block on the same possession. Kid just doesn't give up. I think a lot of other teams will underestimate him for his size, but he is looking real comfortable.

Speaking of comfortable - Gil looks the opposite, and it was clear Hurley was PISSED at him. With good reason. It wasn't the lack of execution that pissed Dan off, it was the lack of effort. Not cycling on screens, not wanting to get physical...he's gotta figure that out.

But if he doesn't, it's clear Earl Watson can come in and play. He really gets the most out of his minutes - I'd like to think he's earned more.

Can't say this enough - nice to see the free throws finally start falling. Over 80% in the 2nd half. 75% for the game. As good as we played the 2nd half...if we shot in the 50-60 range, this is a different game. Hopefully this starts a trend. Maybe with a game like this under their belt they can start to believe they can hit them.

Should be able to go on a run to the VCU game...no reason we can't. Honestly, with Dayton losing their front court, a top 3 finish isn't out of the question at all. Let's just take care of Brown first, PC took them lightly and look what happened.

This was our best game yet this year.
I said great instead of well, but thanks for distorting what I said, nice strawman. I was watching the game where we played a pretty average team and couldn't run the offense whenever they pressured us at mid court. I believe we did a number of other things well which overcame that one particular deficiency, which I also stated in that post you questioned.

The major point of my first post, which I clearly didn't articulate well enough, is I don't think Detroit is our best game. We did some stuff well, and we did one thing poorly. I was encouraged, not because we beat a Horizon League team who is 186th in the RPI that's 1-4 on the road by 14, but because we handled that team so well and I think this team still has another gear, maybe two, that I think they'll be able to reach as the year goes along and our younger players mature even more.

I agree. We're 8-3 and our freshmen have a lot of room
to develop.
When they reach the levels we think they should, as the season progresses,
this team could be special.
I think Watson needs to see more time, as Gil continues to struggle.
Remember how well Gil played last year at LSU? Where is that player?
In any case, we have much to look forward to.

I'm a huge Watson fan.

The major reason that Earl hasn't seen more playing time is because we've had to match-up against our opponents' smaller line-ups. Our opponents' personnel has often dictated that we go with only one "big-man" on the court, which they prefer to be Hass obviously.

Brown has some length in the front court (Maia 6'9, Kuakumensah 6'9, Leland King 6'7) and I would expect to see a good amount of Earl against the Bears

Jay, what went on between you and the Ref?? I thought he was going to try to get you thrown out of the building.

Gil had one nice back to the basket move and a lay-up, but other than that had a TERRIBLE game. I can't believe he still makes the dumb off the ball fouls. Reischel should never get into a game again, ever.

I'm very pumped about this team....the A-10 is a gauntlet every year, but I think they've got a real opportunity this year.

****have to account for EC being the defecto guy that shoots it when the shot clock runs out.

I'm sure teams are aware of this. I bet if there was a stat that threw out the last second shots his percentage would jump. Also when he gets a set shot with an open look he probably hits them above 50%.

Blue Man wrote:Most impressed with the halftime adjustment of putting TJ in to shut down Howard. Game, set, match right there. He had maybe 1 good look...MAYBE one in the 2nd half. He killed us in the first. Had one basket in the final 2 minutes. TJ made him irrelevant. Kid can lock down anyone in the country.
Great adjustment by Hurley and a great job of executing by TJ.

Speaking of adjustments, I'm very happy to see Dan attacking the zone
with a high post passer.
This beats the hell out of aimlessly passing the ball around and lobbing up a prayer,
with the shot clock going off.
When I mentioned this to Dan a few weeks ago, he said it was more easily said
than done.
Sometimes, old concepts really work. My thought was Gil in the circle.
TJ is a better option, because he's got a very high basketball IQ.
That position becomes a stationary point guard, distributing the ball to cutters,
open perimeter shooters, taking it himself, or driving and dishing off.
Lots of options for that man in the middle.
We're going to see a ton of zones, so at least we're on the way towards
solving it.
