Watson cannot shoot FTs, that much we know. But he can definitely play. He should be getting more minutes.

The difference there is just aesthetically versus yesterday is so dramatic. Gives you an idea of the athletic disparity between the three respective programs. We look like a team that will be a force against teams that don't have elite athletes like Kansas had.

Agree. He is not a scrub and he shouldn't be getting scrub minutes. Although Santa Clara is a tiny team so no surprise he is dominating the glass.adam914 wrote:I love Watson more and more every time I see him play.

Also Hassan is going to slap someone if he keeps getting ignored on offense. He stands there wide open calling for the ball without anyone looking at him at least 6 times a game.

Welsh called Hassan out for getting the ball and just passing it back. When you don't play with the ball you can't pick when you want to be the threat.

Hassan isn't going to create a lot by himself. He needs to get the ball when he is in position to score.

Dominating 2nd half against a team we should dominate. Very good bounceback for these guys. This 3rd game in Orlando (as long as G Tech beats Rider) should be an interesting matchup. Little stiffer test than Santa Clara for sure. Glad to see a great effort today though.

Biggie & Watson played great today. A fantastic effort all-around.
I'm hopeful that any shooting woes we encounter as the season progresses will likely be outweighed by our brutally aggressive defense.

That game was very pleasing to watch. We could've beaten them much worse if we were really good on offense, but we were very methodical and poised and the defense was soooo nice.

Santa Clara kind of folded a bit in the second half, but I won't discredit our defense, which as mentioned was stifling. Much better all around effort today, if yesterday was as bad as its going to get, then I'm happy through 5 games. Great hustle all day today. Keep rolling Rhody!

Good bounce back win. They didn't let the bad performance from the preceding game carry over. Encouraging sign for the future. Get a win on Sunday and this was a successful trip.

Hurley said it was the best defense in the second half ever played
by any team that he's coached.
Maybe we can win as a defensive team? It's been done.
Defense shows up every night, even when the ball isn't going in the hoop.
I like Watson very much. He and Terrell bring almost a football type
mentality to their game.
EC showed he can score and score well, within the context of the offense.
I'd like to see Hassan get the ball more and try to score.
Biggie's best game as a Ram. Reischel contributing more than
most of us expected.
I loved the effort today.
Don't know much about Georgia Tech, but I will by gametime.
Would be nice to beat an ACC team.

9 plus minutes of shutout defense is impressive, regardless of the opponent. Nice to see Jarelle continue to contribute- good guy, works hard but can get in his own way sometimes. Great game for Biggie, too. They'll need him this year.

Nice win. Georgia Tech is coached by ex Dayton coach B rian Gregory. They are not a good team. Marquette is not good this year and only beat them by 2. If URI plays a decent game they should win by 10 or more.

Dan goes back over .500 (64-63) in his D1 coaching career with the win.
Let's hope he gets his Rhody coaching record to .500 this season. He's presently at 26-40. Do the math.

Yea we don't measure ourselves against Kansas, especially in November.
Nice bounce back in the 2nd half of that game and then this game.
Good stuff can be pointed out for everybody.
They are settling down, Gil seems comfortable and better than ever.
My question is, what if he just knocks down that wide open 3 we begin every possession with? Definitely asking too much but he can make those.

The key to the entire season imo, is the improvement of the 2 freshman.
Can they duplicate EC's and Hassan's development as freshmen?
I think they will at least come close. Reason?
They will play. A lot. Just as the other two did.
As Jarvis becomes an offensive threat, will open up the offense so much more. Hassan will get more looks. EC can play off the ball, where he's much better. He did that a little more today.
Terrell will find his shot too. Then watch us go!

Re: Game #5: Santa Clara Broncos - 2:30pm ESPNU - GameDay!
I was kind of curious about that myself, since in the Kansas game, they were also sagging way off of him when he had the ball at the top of the key, completely wide open. He hasn't really taken enough 3-point shots to get a clear handle on his ability from there. There is typically a correlation between FT percentage and 3-point percentage, and he's not a great FT shooter, but he might be able to hit the 3 at a decent enough clip to at least force people to stick with him on pick and rolls, and when he has the ball, to open up passing lanes. (An example of this at the NBA level is Boris Diaw, who's only shot 40%+ one season, but he shots well enough to draw defenders which opens up his passing.)Seawrightspostgame wrote:My question is, what if he just knocks down that wide open 3 we begin every possession with? I think this will happen. (Not that you said it wouldn't, mind you!) You can see the athleticism and the raw skill there, and he has the recruiting pedigree. It'll just be a matter of him focusing that ability and getting used to the college game. I think he'll have games like the Nebraska OT, where he hits a couple big shots, and other games like vs. Kansas, when he was forcing things.Rhody72 wrote:A lot this season depends upon Terrell improving on offense.

.....Well SG I have seen him knock down shot after shot from 3 in Mackal. And! it seems that if he hits 1 it is usually when he plays his best (LSU).
The team is very encouraging when you account for what they already are, and the fact that they are all young and should improve, not only the frosh but the whole team.

It looks like it has been a big leap in competition for Jarvis. He does not look comfortable and still needs to figure out the speed of the game. He will be a plus once he figures out where his shots will come from in the flow of the offense and in the meantime hope he can concentrate on setting up his teammates. The team as a whole needs to improve their movement without the ball.Tom98 wrote:I would like to see some extended minutes for Garett now......Jarvis just needs more time to get more comfortable with the offense

SPG, that's right, and it looks like Gil at this point is the most improved player so far.
Wish we had him for another season. Sigh.

Re: Game #5: Santa Clara Broncos - 2:30pm ESPNU - GameDay!
DD88, it looks like Dan has decided to work JG into the lineup a little more gradually than Terrell.
As long as Biggie and TJ play well enough to take up some of the slack.
Jarvis is going to be a good one, and he's going to run this offense and improve the ball movement considerably over time.
PG's are like bigs, it takes a little longer to develop at this level.
You don't see too many PG's carrying their teams to the promised land as freshmen and sophomores. Only a special few are good enough to do that.
For examples, look at PC and UMass last year. Senior PG's. Even UConn with junior PG's. As frosh and sophs, they were a work in progress.

I bet Dan loved the play where Terrell dove for the loose ball. I know I did.
Not worried at all about the frosh. They have a lot of talent and will great.
Very impressed with Gil. There's a lot of pressure on him, too. He's got to anchor our front line and also keep out of foul trouble. So far so good.
Love seeing JR and Minnis contributing.
I guess "volume scorer" is the phrase for the year.

Re: Game #5: Santa Clara Broncos - 2:30pm ESPNU - GameDay!
Notes from the game today:
- Good Rhody crowd
- Much talk about offense on our board, who is taking shots, taking to many shots, etc, etc but today was an amazing defensive effort
- Consider Santa Clara gave Tennessee all they could handle and Tennessee gave Kansas a scare today - the final score was not indicative of how well Tennessee played Kansas - so Santa Clara was no easy team for URI to beat today
- URI led 34-27 at the half with a good defensive effort and hot shooting from EC from 3 point land
- About 9.5 minutes into the 2nd half Santa Clara had not scored - NOT SCORED A SINGLE POINT. URI ran off 14 unanswered points in that 9.5 minutes to basically put the game away.
- Even when Santa Clara scored it was on a bad call by the refs - it was NOT a foul - but Santa Clara went to the line and hit 2
- In reality Santa Clara did not legitimately score until 11 minutes were gone in the 2nd half when they hit a 3 pointer - again I don't count the phantom foul on a great blocked shot by Rhody at the 9.5 minutes gone mark
- This is such a change from the Baron era when it was all about offense and little about defense
- It is also a big change from last year too - best defensive effort I have seen in many years by URI, and a sign of more to come
- The guy I love to watch play defense is Terrell. This kid really and truly brings the defensive intensity to this team that is even contagious to the others on the team. He ignites fast breaks, he creates havoc, he causes turnovers, just watch this kid off the ball
- Great game by EC - he is a heck of a player. His 3 pointers were all net all day. EC seems to have an amazing "out of nowhere" blocked shot every game.
- Great save by Jarvis Garrett when he dove head first into the URI bench in the 2nd half and saved a ball that for sure was out of bounds. Plays like that just spark the entire team and demoralize the opposition. Was made on the defensive end - again superior hustle, defensive intensity and defensive effort
- Very nice game by Biggie Minnis today with 5 assists and some very nice passes at that. Best game I can recall him playing ever at URI. He got a lot of minutes and he played tough defense as well. He made a strong case for more future minutes at the PG spot.
- Earl with 5 rebounds in 8 minutes with 4 being offensive. Next closest guy on the team had 3 rebounds. Wow.
- We doubled Santa Clara's assists 14 to 7. We outrebounded Santa Clara 31 to 17.
- Biruta with only 1 foul coming almost at halftime. Martin with only 1 foul. When has that ever happened?
Other observations:
Michigan State is very good. Great defense, great outside shooting. I would not be surprised if they beat Kansas - they are an elite team in my opinion, but so is Kansas. Those two teams deserve to be in the Final just as their ratings indicate. They also have by far the biggest fan support - Kansas fans are huge in number - like home games. They are the only team of the 8 with a cheer squad of 8 plus their Jayhawk Mascot and today also with their Junior Jayhawk 1/2 Mascot.
Marquette has looked tough in this tournament, especially Matt Carlino who scored 38 against Georgia Tech.
I don't think any win is an easy win for us yet. We are young, inexperienced and improving but I don't think a win against Georgia Tech is anything close to a gimme. Tech is huge down low with Charles Mitchell who transferred back home to play at Tech from Maryland and NCAA ruled immediately eligible due to family reasons. Cox is huge and also a 5th year transfer in. Both guys weigh 275 pounds and they are very agile.
Marcus Georges-Hunt is a very good off guard. I hope our defense is tough Sunday night - we can't take any team lightly as we are just not that dominant - yet. We really need this win to make this a successful tournament. Rider got crushed by Michigan State, absolutely crushed, but they gave Georgia Tech a very good battle. Tech gave Marquette a strong game and Marquette played Michigan State tough.
So to me Georgia Tech is far from an automatic win - but one our guys really need to continue the momentum this team is generating.
