A10 Tournament: Rd 1 vs Umass - Thu March 13, 9pm CSN/A10
Re: Game 32 - Thurs Mar 13 - 9pm vs UMass - Barclays Center
Gil has got to play with passion, don't over think, and stay on the floor.
I could say that he should play better than last game, but that certainly wouldn't say much.
Go Rhody!

There's the man! Tom Penders.
He knows the score. He's been there and done that with four different
schools.
Couldn't think of a former URI person who'd be better to address our guys.

so exactly how many games to we have to win, to get a NIT bid and play Canisius. (Congratulations to CFL for another likely NIT bid)

Re: Game 32 - Thurs Mar 13 - 9pm vs UMass - Barclays Center
Seawright...let me count the ways why conference tournaments are pointless:
1) For smaller leagues, a two month 14-18 game marathon grind of schedule gets thrown in the garbage for a 3-day tourney where somebody gets hot/lucky and gets the league's bid. Why even keep standings if the regular season champs gets disregarded? I feel terrible for those top seeds that got bounced because they had one bad game. It's a rotten process.
2) For larger leagues, the teams that 95% of the time win the conference tournament already have automatic bids sewn up. It's not like Northwestern is going to win the Big Ten tourney this year. So Ohio State or Wisconsin wins the Big Ten tourney and cuts the nets down? Big deal...they're going to the NCAA's anyway. And Michigan won the regular season title. That should matter for something.
3) For the top 15-20 teams nationally who have legitimate shots at the Final Four, what is there to gain? Let's say that Creighton goes to MSG for the Big Least tourney and plays crappy DePaul. Doug McDermott then breaks his wrist when some DePaul knucklehead undercuts him going up for a rebound. A truly meaningless game in the big picture but Creighton's NCAA hopes dashed....down the drain just like that. Can you imagine being a Creighton fan, coach or player? Can you imagine if Silk Owens had gotten hurt back in '88?
4) Billy Donovan has recently made point #4 for me. Let's say Florida wins the SEC tourney on Sunday. The bracket comes out Sunday night and Gators find out they have a game on Thursday afternoon. Then they're back in Gainesville on Monday. Have to travel to tourney site on Tuesday b/c they have NCAA mandatory practice/shootaround on Wednesday and then they play Thursday. So because of conference tourney, they have little rest, little class time, little prep time. It's even worse for the #11 seed at-large team that goes deep in conference tourney (let's say St. Joe's this year) and then has to play the "First Four In" game on Tuesday/Wednesday night in Dayton against fellow #11 seed Stanford.
These are reasons why the conference tournaments are no good for the players/coaches and if (name college fan) you truly want your team to have its best chance at succeeding in the NCAA tournament, then you'd say good riddance too. I do realize that these conference tournaments are about $$$$ for the conference and filling out TV schedules for the networks. So I doubt they'll go away despite my wishes...

Re: Game 32 - Thurs Mar 13 - 9pm vs UMass - Barclays Center
I remember when the ACC was the only post season tournament.
People said they'd get worn out and not win in the NCAAs.
Very intense games for Duke, UNC and then South Carolina, who had a
good program.
Then people saw dollar signs and for the same reason you have multi layered
playoffs in baseball and other sports, college basketball gave in to the almighty dollar.
Sure Cinderella stories are nice, but why should say, Robert Morris, win their conference
and then go home, because a .500 team beat them? An entire season lost
to a single elimination tournament.
Once there were 32 team in the NCAA, and it was the best of the best.
Now, its 65 counting the play in game.
More interest with more school, happy alums and boosters.
It's all about money and TV.
Unfortunately, there's no going back.

Seawright sure you do...but you'd be the first one crying and whining when an automatic bid from an "undeserving" team who won a conference tourney steals an at-large bid from a 23-8 URI team with an RPI of 38.

Re: Game 32 - Thurs Mar 13 - 9pm vs UMass - Barclays Center
The conference tournaments meant something back in the day when only the tournament winner would go to the NCAA tournament, and the regular season champ had to go to the NIT....that's what made the ACC tournament great way back when....the NCAA took the conference champs only back then....if your conference determined champ by regular season that school went....if they used a tourney to determine the champ only that team went....
.....the NIT was great back then because it had a great pool of teams to invite which are now the at-large bids awarded to high RPI schools that aren't the conference champs....
....the ACC made big money with their conference tournament....but couldn't hold it unless that determined the championship.....it wasn't allowed.....it was a way to make extra money....and then other conferences followed suit to make money......some more successfully than others......hence more regular season champs knocked out of the NCAA tournament....over time the money of the NCAA tourney grew quite large so the bigger BCS schools fought to enlarge the field......
.....that killed the NIT in my opinion.....and lead the tournament to where it is today....

I have always liked the idea, especially for one bid leagues, of having the regular season and conference tournament champions play each other for the NCAA bid if different teams win the league and tournament.
As much as everyone complains about conference tourneys, in the end we all watch and enjoy them.

Fordham just beat George Mason, 70-67. On two occasions in the last 15 seconds, Fordham was up three with GMU in possession and decide to purposely foul to prevent the three. And even then a three point attempt off a missed FT by Holloway came so close to tieing the game for Mason. Tough loss, wanted to see the snobby Rams lose big time. Pecora is a douchebag.

Both Pecora and Hewitt come up short in the x and o dept.
Yeah, Fordham won the game, but Frazier is their only player that can get his own shot, and he's a senior. I know they have Paschall next season, but they need a LOT more than that. Canty, when he wants to play, is a heck of a rebounder though.
GMU loses, what, 3 of their best players? They might even be worse next season.

GMU, Fordham, and Davidson will bring up the rear in next year's A10. LaSalle may be pretty bad too.
Don't know about StBonnie or Duquesne.
We should be better than all of them. Hopefully by a lot.

Agree with this, except the argument against tournaments really aren't "facts," or at least they aren't facts that prove anything. Whether you think a regular season or a tournament should decide an autobid isn't really a factual thing, it's just an opinion.Seawrightspostgame wrote:The conference tourney argument you guys are making is based off facts and teams not getting a fair shake.

I think in this day and age all of the A10 tourney games should be on TV - kind of small time that they are not.

Today's noon Game is supposed to be on SNY and Comcast Sports Network regional channels. I checked and it's on Comcast Sports Net New England, the same network that carries the Celtics games up here.
That will be the channel that carries the Rhode Island game at 9pm. The other two games are on NBC Sports Network today. So virtually any cable subscriber should be able to watch games today.
