I'm in favor of legalization.
Not in favor of offensive stereotyping / racist assumptions in hunting for jokes about a person's background. "Lighten up, it's just a joke" doesn't do it for me. Find better jokes.
Back to the player himself, yes please. Glad to see we're on him early.

Wait a second...u think a marijuana joke in reference to someone being from Jamaica is offensive / racist? Have you spent much time in Jamaica? I have many Jamaican friends in the US and Jamaica and I don't know a single one that would take offense to that.
On topic: this guy looks like the real deal!

And if you have Irish friends who aren't offended about alcoholic jokes...and Jewish friends who aren't offended about jokes about money...then that means the jokes aren't offensive and racially charged/insensitive?Justns11 wrote:Wait a second...u think a marijuana joke in reference to someone being from Jamaica is offensive / racist? Does not seem to make sense to me to poke fun at prospective recruits names who could be reading our message board. Maybe they don't read it but maybe they do, or someone they know reads it.

Some of you have thinner skins than an onion. Bob Marley is looking down from the heavens and laughing. And the name is pronounced COBURN. Some of you need to travel abroad and get a new perspective.

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
I just dont see anything racist at all about referencing marijuana in reference to someone being from Jamaica. Maybe that's insensitive on my part. I'd do the same with someone from Amsterdam or like you said Irish and alcohol. The Jewish / money thing crosses the line in my opinion. I guess I'm insensitive and I've just never had anyone bring it to my attention.

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
Good question. Just my opinion but I don't think joking with an Irish person about drinking and someone from Jamaica about smoking weed would be offensive (just my opinion). I wouldn't joke about someone's religion making them tight with money. Keep in mind I work for an Israeli company and I've spent a lot of time in Tel Aviv, and around Jewish people so that may play into it.
At the end of the day I just don't see the problem with joking with someone from Jamaica about smoking weed, but I want to let this go. I can see the other side of the debate and like I said maybe I'm somewhat insensitive here. Like I said I've just never witnessed someone being offended to these topics, but maybe they have and just didn't express it. I also realize that doesn't fully rationale this but that's where I'm coming from.

Offers are wonderful, but they are just that an offer, a dime a dozen. Look at the competition. I wouldn't expect to see any further posts on this thread. It's a lot nicer to see a prospect state he has actual mutual interest in URI.

I guess hearing the news that we can't get even get a 4 star SF from our own backyard to be on his first list doesn't lend a lot of confidence that we can get a 4 star C from NY.ramster wrote:Thinking Big.......why the hell not?

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
Swider had all the signals of a local player not interested in URI.
Its ok. I still think the team and program turned a corner in late February.
URI will be good this coming year. I expect that they will be really good.
How about a dominant OOC? A10 Regular Season champ? A10 Tournament champ? Sweet Sixteen? If the players have any sense of maturity then they will know that they want to be greedy this year and really win some things and not live off of last year.

(REALLY) Small connection, but Cockburn will be playing for the same AAU team (NY Rens) that Malik Martin is.
If we can get a commit from Martin, it could strengthen our case just a little bit to land this guy.

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
ok, so you think we are wasting our time offering a 2019 Player, I definitely do not. Not sure what time is wasted by simply offering the kid a URI Scholarship. I don't understand what we have to lose by doing this. Maybe I am just missing something.Billyboy78 wrote:I mean, we can offer Marvin Bagley too, but we're not getting him either.
If it wasn't for twitter nobody but the kid and the URI Coaching staff would even know we were offering him. Now with everything tweeted for the word to see every minute everyone can have opinions about the Coaching staff wasting their time or not wasting their time depending on each individual's point of view.

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
I have no problem if the Coaching staff wants to offer Marvin Bagley. We once got the Number 1 Player in the United States whose picture was on the front cover of the New York Post his Senior Year in High School.Billyboy78 wrote:I mean, we can offer Marvin Bagley too, but we're not getting him either.

I posted my response on the wrong thread and it confused some, sorry working too many hours of late...........................
Sorry Ace, I mistakenly posted this on the wrong Recruiting thread, should have been on the Kofi Cockburn thread in response to comment that we should not be offering him and that the URI Coaching Staff is wasting their time offering him because URI couldn't even get a 4 star local RI Kid on hit final list - meaning Cole Swider. My point was that it's ok to have reach targets just as kids have reach schools. You may not think that you can get them but what does it hurt to try was my point. Plus Cockburn is a Class of 2019 player. It sometimes pays off to be among the early offers for players and to be recruiting them from early on. There are dozens of kids every year that go with lesser schools because of the relationships built with Coaches and Assistant Coaches over long periods of time.ace wrote:No, and, with all due respect, I don't care. I care about this staff getting the players they want and, if we're talking about others coaches, maybe Grant and Rhoades and Ford and McCall, if only for location. In the A10, you have to be at the top of the conference to be at all relevant nationally. In other conferences, being somewhere in the top half can get you that.ramster wrote:Know how many TOP 30 ESPN players Cooley is talking to and watching?
But to me I am fine with whoever the Coaching staff wants to offer. I am sure that the HC and the Assistants know what they are doing in who and when they offer.
My point about Cooley and Staff are offering Top 30 ESPN Players so why shouldn't Hurley and staff?

We are early in that he is a 2019 player is what I meant. I still do not get why URI is wrong in offering him.

Re: '19 Jamaican C - Kofi Cockburn (Offer)
That was kind of a unique deal with Lamar....he came with Harrick and Jerry D........
To land a recruit of this caliber we need some sort of special relationship to make it happen.
ramster, we aren't wrong to be offering him.....it does mean that we are shooting higher, much higher than in the past....
Maybe someday it will pay off. Another trip to the NCAAT this coming season would help with those 19's......
We will ALWAYS have a need for quality bigs....and the more we get involved with, the better.
A guy like Cockburn, however, might be a little out of our reach...for now.

I mean in some cases you dodge bullets by not being in these guys league.
Rodney Miller doesn't look an ounce better than a Mike Laysard. Miller just didn't belong on the court this year at Miami and we would have rejoiced had we signed him.

Not saying there is anything wrong with offering. Just spend more time on more realistic recruits. And I'm not saying that they aren't either. I just don't think we have a chance. By the time he's a senior, Kentucky, and others, will most likely be involvedrambone 78 wrote:That was kind of a unique deal with Lamar....he came with Harrick and Jerry D........

So now we appear to have both problems I guess. We are wasting our time trying to recruit guys who are too good for us and we are at the same time not aggressive enough and not thinking big and going after impact players that we need.

Ramster, I have said several times that there is nothing wrong with offering. As Ace just said, since we have limited resources, we have to use them wisely and make smart choices as to where the recruiting money is spent. It doesn't cost to offer.
