EYBL Recruiting

Unread post by Blue Man »

A very overlooked, and underrated quality that Dan has had in his time here, is the ability to get Nike EYBL kids (for the most part the best recruits out there), to an Adidas school. There's a good amount of reasons Dan wants out of the Adidas contract, most of all the recruiting hindrance.

With Stan Robinson committing here, that now makes 5/13 schollys EYBL guys.

Thompson - Nike Team Louisiana, Terrell and Iverson - Expressions, EC - The Family, Robinson - Team Takeover.

That's absurd for a non-Nike school. No surprise either that all those Nike players are 4 star/NBA potential guys.

The other huge part of this, is that Dan has proven he can step outside of the NY/NJ area of recruiting, since none of those Nike kids are from the tri-state. Hass Martin's New Heights team played Under Armour.

If this is what he's able to do with an arm tied behind his back by this sponsorship, imagine what he'll be able to do in the next couple years when he can get out of the Adidas deal.

All absolutely true.
I was told by someone close to Expressions Elite, that
the addidas-URI link was a problem.
The sooner URI lets basketball go on their own after the
contract runs out, the better.

June 30, 2016. At that point Hurley and the basketball program are able to negotiate their own deal.

I think it was mentioned in the thread on Hurley's new contract. 2016 if I recall?

I'm amazed how an affiliation with a shoe company makes a difference in recruiting.

In other words, this is the last year that we will be working with Addidas

The latest 30 for 30, Sole Man, was all about Sonny Vaccaro and the sneaker wars between Nike and ADIDAS. Really interesting, and it helped to humanize a guy that's often demonized by old school basketball folks.

I thought the Sonny 30 for 30 was excellent. One of the most interesting stories in a series full of interesting stories.

Under Armour is quickly on the rise as well. With Steph Curry, Under Armour is making a push for #2. Leroy Butts comes from a UA Association team. BC, Auburn, Notre Dame all wear Under Armour.
Does Georgia Tech still wear Russell? I remember noticing that while watching a football game.

Can't wait until we're Nike again, the Adidas sponsorship definitely hurts recruiting slightly. Adidas isn't cool anymore, and it will lose its #2 spot in time to Under Armour (tip: buy the stock!)

Yeah, one of the big things in the first contract revision was giving the basketball program the autonomy to negotiate separate from university athletics as a whole. They had to ride out the contract they had signed, but it expires in a year. Better shoe deal, increasingly shrinking APR limitations- things are good.

Maybe we can negotiate to get our school colors back, too.

Ha! When was the last time we had KEANEY BLUE road uniforms?
This blah blue that we've worn forever sucks!
Keaney Blue is only for the basketball teams. Navy blue
is the actual URI school color.

If we can't have Keaney Blue, we should wear Navy. The colors of the uniforms are ridiculous.

The kids hate Under Armour sneakers. It better be Nike. Or Jordan would be great which is a separate brand. And the other reason it makes a big difference is they get almost unlimited shoes..and no one wears Adidas…free Jordan's? I'm damn near 40 and I'd sign up for that..

Maybe Tom Brady can create an Uggs line of athletic wear?
I wear NB and my daughter tells me,

Nah, New Balance has a line of casual/running shoes that are popular. 990's, 993's and 574s. With that said, no kid is wearing their basketball shoes or choosing a school because they have New Balances!

Birkenstock! I hear they are very comfortable. Plus they've been in business since 1774, so we know they aren't going anywhere.

The baseball team should go to PF Flyers -- could give them an inside track to bring in Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez as an assistant.
