He was pretty much unknown a year ago. On ESPN's new list, he's a 4* and ranked #84.

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
There is such good local talent, it's a shame that most of them don't want to stay home but rather got to ACC/SEC/B1G. Some seem to think Gabriel is headed to Virginia.
You have to wonder how Donovan leaving changes the recruitment of Murphy. I had heard for at least a year it was all but certain he was headed to Florida. Have no idea who the new "leader" would be.
In 2016, you have Heron, Brown, Gabriel, Tshimanga. In 2017, there is Lawrence, Murphy, Samuels, Langford, Waters, Okeke. Hope some stay in the area. In theory, these should be the easier gets.

There is always another "hot" school. (No pun intended.) A few years ago, it was UConn, Baylor; then Virginia, Iowa State, N.C. State, Maryland, etc. Years ago, it was Georgetown….

Yeah, it sucks when schools at our level and even below our level identify talent early and then the talent blows up. The "name" schools just seem to have to wait for later in the process, then battle it out amongst themselves. As soon as we hear names like Kansas and Duke, we're done.bressler3south wrote:Adam Finkelstein

I spoke to a member of a staff of one of the top schools in the country. He said they really only look at seniors because, not to be cocky or sound like a douche, but they believe they can get involved with any player at any time and still have a legit shot.

Rod, I know we've beaten this dead horse to a pulp, but for a team supposedly on the rise and needing a couple of bigs desperately and soon, we don't seem to be close with anybody of note right now.
Hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised, but as time goes by and more and more 2016's are signed, it will be harder and harder to be as confident of landing the recruits we need.

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
Well, a wider blanket has been spread this year with bigs,
mostly down South, thanks to ARD.
We're also involved early with some good jucos,
unlike last year, where we were scrambling late to
get involved with players.
Time will tell how this shakes out.

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
Amazing what happens to a recruit's rank once Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke offer.
Actually, I'd take their leftovers.
We need to hear some good news soon, and not wait until November if possible.....

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
Chicken and the egg. Actually Gabriel kicked butt in the AAU circuit this summer and he played himself into this picture. That is why Kentucky, Duke, etc are involved - Gabriel performed outstandingly on the College Basketball center stage.

Haha what the hell is Providence selling to get on these lists? This list is like if I was going to get a new car, and I told someone my choice was down to five: Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, Mazda and Cadillac.

Here's another case of a kid who could go somewhere and play right away (PC), or go to other places and sit, at least for a while. Unfortunately for URI and PC, when you see those other schools mentioned, it's over.rjsuperfly66 wrote:@AdamFinkelstein: ESPN 100 PF @WenyenGabriel tells @ESPNRNHoops he has cut his list to 5 - Duke, Kentucky, UConn, Providence & Maryland

Yeah, well apparently it's not over for PC yet, and URI didn't make his final cut. At least they have "hope." URI had another invisible guy until everyone else and his mother got to see him.Billyboy78 wrote:Here's another case of a kid who could go somewhere and play right away (PC), or go to other places and sit, at least for a while. Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
"Wenyen Gabriel may have been the largest stock-riser in the class of 2016 this grassroots season. The 6’9 combo forward possesses an offer list that reads like a who’s who of college basketball elite. Then there is Providence and Ed Cooley. Cooley has been on Gabriel the longest of any high major school. Providence became Gabriel’s first high major offer back in July 2014. Gabriel’s only other offer at that time was from in-state New Hampshire. On Wednesday Gabriel cut his list down to a final 5 schools. That list is comprised of Duke, Kentucky, Maryland, Providence and UConn, according to a tweet from Adam Finkelstein."TruePoint wrote:Haha what the hell is Providence selling to get on these lists?

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
Except Providence isn't a high major. But otherwise, OK. Cooley is obviously a terrific recruiter, at least in terms of the relationship building part of it.

It's great to be with that kind of company on the consideration list, but it also means PC likely has a very very very small chance at landing him.

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
I know Cooley was at every Game that Abu played in his Jr to Sr year summer and then the same for Gabriel. He makes an impression on these players and the entire team for that matter. He may lose out on Gabriel, but then you never know. Look how Terrell changed his mind, then how Iverson came our way.
Wenyen played himself into this position during AAU this very summer, so in a sense Cooley has to keep recruiting him since its been two years already - he can't quit now. But it also helps PC to be mentioned in the Final 5 like this, just as it helped St Louis to be in the Final 4 with Tatum this summer.

Cooley is selling himself, and his mantra since Day One -- at Fairfield -- has been: "Recruit, recruit, recruit." He doesn't care who he's going up against, though, I do question his background checks on a good number of his signees…..TruePoint wrote:Haha what the hell is Providence selling to get on these lists? Some national writer recently tweeted that being a successful recruiter requires you to know who you can sign and who you cannot....and not waste a whole lot of time on those you cannot....
....I think Hurley was lucky that big time guys like Gabriel and Fultz and others eliminated us early and we chose to concentrate our time on those guys the staff liked......I have to think that they valued our signees as much as they valued Marfo and Bracey, etc. and accepted their commitments after their visits..

Re: '16 NH PF Wenyen Gabriel
So let's see if I got this straight your coach recruits a guy convicted in the drive-by shooting of a single mother. Yet you question the character of the players Cooley recruits. Lol only on Keaney blue board. Lolbressler3south wrote:Cooley is selling himself, and his mantra since Day One -- at Fairfield -- has been: "Recruit, recruit, recruit."
