St John's Up 32-30 at half. Kobi Simmons with a huge half from three including one almost from half court at buzzer. Dowtin hit one 3. Dowtin had two steals and went length of court for layup for 7 points at the half. He looks good passing and defensively. Big game for St John's to maintain their USA Today Top 10 ranking.

Wait until he gets to URI. He'll be asked to have a standing dribble between the circles for 22 seconds before being forced into a bad shot.

our shooting percentages don't support this assertion...45% FGs, 38% from 3. Our problems are not in design, they are in execution, especially in the last 5 minutes.

Great win tonight for 7th ranked USA Today St John's College HS @ 14th ranked Gonzaga.
Gonzaga had a 46-36 lead going into the 4th Q but St. John's out scored the home team 25-11 to win 61-57!!
Jeff Dowtin led all scorers with 21 points.
Anthony Cowan, headed to Maryland, had 17 for St John's.

Looking forward to seeing Jeff at URI next year. Good shooter, excellent passer, solid defensively, from a very good HS program and the country's most competitive league.

Jeff might be a steal. Interesting situation he is coming into, where on the plus side there will be no pressure on him to carry a heavy load early, but on the other hand he might have his patience tested waiting for an opportunity. If everyone is healthy, Stan Robinson is solidly on the level of and in the mix with the three starters, and Jeff doesn't beat Thompson out, it might not be the worst thing in the world to think about saving a year of his eligibility. Considering some of the depth issues we've had, that is kind of an amazing thought to have. But it may be tricky trying to get six guards legit minutes for straight years. Then suddenly four of them will be gone. Will be interesting how all that plays out.

Next season, we should finally have the luxury of having quality depth at most all positions, with the only exception being small forward.

That will be a first here for Dan.

Unfortunately, as was said, the "balance" of the recruiting classes is off somewhat. Ideally you would like to have a good mix of positions coming in every year, but with all the coming and goings with transfers and whatnot, that "flow" has been messed up.

That will take time to get straightened out.

#7 St. John's @ #10 DeMatha tonight 7:30pm.
DeMatha is led by #10 ESPN ranked combo guard 6'5" Markelle Fultz. Fultz is headed to University of Washington. He is projected in NBAdraft.net to go 7th in 2017.

Maybe he can push our other guards to bigger and better things?

And people are asking about what point guard will follow Jarvis Garret?!?

This class is exciting. Hopefully the whole thing gets on campus without a hitch and has four great years.

Put these kids with CT and Akele and whoa! Good 6 guys to play.

I especially like that Jeff hit Two clutch FTs to stop the run with tape covering the cut on his arm. Bet he can play with a mask on too!

"But that’s as close as DeMatha would get. With blue tape covering up the cut on his right arm, Dowtin went to the line and converted a pair of free throws to stop the Stags run, then Cowan and Clayton each hit a pair to clinch the game"

You are right, it Doesn't matter.......but yes, I think so.
Read the article on how Dowtin picked Markelle Fultz clean and went in for an acrobatic layup. Dowtin passes very well, runs the break well, tough defensively, rebounds effectively. This was a big game in DC. Best league in the country with St. John's, DeMatha and Gonzaga all top 25 teams.

In this game Anthony Cowan is ESPN ranked #69 plays on St John's and is signed with Maryland.
Markelle Fultz is ESPN ranked #10 and signed with Washington. His teammate, D.J. Harvey JR is ESPN ranked #17 Class of 2017.
Gives an idea of the level of play in tonight's game.

Langevine struggled a bit when Richards returned to the line-up, but he's looked better lately. He's energy and potential and intangibles for sure, but he needs to develop it all, which is hardly rare for a high schooler.

All those freshman bigs need to do next year is rebound and hold their own on D.
Layssard looks like he will be able to provide some scoring for us. Lots of skill and pretty good quickness for someone who looks a little overweight. But all I've seen are two highlight videos from him last year.

I saw him right behind the URI bench earlier this year. He was not overweight. In pictures from the past, yes, but he was in solid shape when I saw him close up.

Thanks Adam..................
To be honest it is much more fun to follow HS Basketball with Dan Hurley in charge. Not since back in the days of Jim Harrick have we been involved with players of this caliber.

I would love to be in DC for this end of season Tournament this weekend starting tonight and ending Monday at American University.

You have St Johns College HS Ranked #9 USA Today. Dematha Ranked #16 USA Today. Gonzaga has been in and out of the USA Today Top 25. Lots of Major College Talent. This level of HS Basketball is the best in the country for such a small area and within the same league.

Players from this level of competition are more likely to come into a program like ours and hit the ground running. Consider that Jeff Dowtin has been the high scorer in games that literally had 3 other ESPN Top 100 players.

Here is some additional info on the Washington Catholic League and the playoffs

I see Dowtin getting a lot of minutes next year in which he will be giving JT and JG a rest in both halves resulting in both JT and JG not being exhausted in the last 4-5 minutes of each game. Having the 2 of them play 32 minutes a game instead of 37-38 will be a great improvement in our end of game performance.

I don't see Dowtin getting a ton of time next year, we will have 3 solid back court players (JG, JT, EC) plus Thompson and Stan Robinson. He will be 6th on th depth chart. And that's a sign of progress in terms of talent.

One of these years it has to go the way they set it up, with freshmen being able to work themselves into their minutes.

Dowtin has the funkiest looking shot, but it seems to work for him. Needs to get stronger. Having Robinson next year, even without knowing what he can give them offensively, seems like it could be big. A tough, physical player with Big 10 experience- you can see where and how that would have been key at times this season.

Dowtin's a combo guard. He can play the point, but that's mainly Cowan's role on his current team. Seems likely that Terrell, Matthews, Thompson, or Dowtin could occupy that back up role when Garrett is out. Dowtin seems to have a good handle, it just hasn't been his role with Cowan there.

maybe a typo ace? but Dowtin had 22 points (not 12) to lead all scorers in the semifinal win against McNamara.
St Johns was down 35-27 at the half but came back and won 72-67 in a hard fought battle. Cowan had 19 points for St Johns.
