Re: 16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds
Another lefty! Some drives reminiscent of EC. Nice segment starting at about 1:20 of continuous footage showing a made 3, steal and layup, steal and another 3 on consecutive possessions. Looks good. Dribble can get a little high.

Re: 16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds
He plays exactly like EC except he seems way better at passing especially when driving to the hoop and in hop step

Re: 16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds
He was unbelievable. Never missed a three. Seriously, reminds me of EC in so many ways, especially his release. (and high dribble)

Getting plenty of NYC press. Hopefully Mullin isn't interested b/c his hit rate is about 99% right now.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (Offer)
Beginning to wonder what's going on with recruiting........
Who's even visiting?
A fail with 2016 recruiting would be a very bad sign for the future.....I know it's still early, but many are either committing or narrowing their choices, and we're not close it seems with any right now...

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (Offer)
I think recruits are being convinced by other schools that Dan will be gone after this year. A couple of the national writers have even hinted at it. A top 25 team, an NCAA bid, and an offer he can't refuse. I am in no way saying that Dan will leave, but the possibility might scare recruits away. The more success the program has, the better the offers will be. I'm betting that's what recruits are being told.rambone 78 wrote:Beginning to wonder what's going on with recruiting........

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (Offer)
When Dan does leave, it will not only be because he gets a great offer.
A big factor will be the difficulty of recruiting to URI.
Would an NCAA tourney appearance [or 2] help?
It might, but only increases the chances of Dan getting that offer he can't refuse.....
I don't doubt he will sign a big or two by the fall, just hope he doesn't have to settle for any more projects like Berry.....

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (Offer)
Cooley's been to 2 NCAA's now, I would say that his overall recruiting body of work has been worse since making it, not better.
Early on, a coach can sell kids on promises of what they can be and playing time. It gets harder once you start getting some young talent in. Most kids don't want to have to sit and wait their turn. It's so bad now that in many cases a kid doesn't want to even sit and earn his role for one season, they wanted to be gifted the keys to the team as soon as possible.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (Offer)
Yes, that's why there are over 600 transfers.
It's not like the old days, where teams were together
for years and people waited their turn.
Now, you have AAU coaches, and hangers on, telling every
kid how he should be in the NBA.
Few of these people have altruistic reasons.
From a very early age, players think it's all about them.

Ponds is one of my favorites in the class of '16. He's taking a chance on Mullin; hope it works out for him.
They're really playing this nostalgia angle hard. It might be all they have this year.

For some great morning entertainment you can chk out the PC board to find a dozen posters crapping on the kid -- and of course the predictable we didn't want him chorus. Self awareness runs low on Smith St

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (St John's Verbal)
I don't have a link, but I thought I read somewhere that Ponds made his final decision last week and notified the coaches, which ultimately would have caused PC to move on White.
But one thing is for sure, you don't spend as much time recruiting a top 50 player as PC did, only to decide you don't want him when you are in his final 2-3 in September.

PC fans say this about every recruit that goes elsewhere. You also have to consider that this is not the brightest fanbase we're talking about here.Shaolin Swat wrote:I don't have a link, but I thought I read somewhere that Ponds made his final decision last week and notified the coaches, which ultimately would have caused PC to move on White.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (St John's Verbal)
There is so much misinformation here it hurts my eyes.
BAR, where are people saying they didn't want Ponds? There are people who said they didn't want him after White committed and they said we don't need another PG because we need a big and a wing. That's a factually correct statement. Not exactly a novel revelation there.
Ponds never told PC he didn't want them. Fact is that Ponds wanted SJU and his mom wanted PC. He cancelled a decision a few times, and rumors were coming out this could linger until the spring. PC just cut their losses because they can't risk a late decision. They've been killed quite a few times on that, chase a guy into February, lose him, and have to claw to make up ground for mediocre prospects.
Ponds is going to be a stud, and glad he stayed in the BE with SJU. Just hope PC destroys him everytime they play.

RJ fortunately for you we don't have a URI ombudsmen trolling the PC board to reply to all the erroneous information about our program, that would be a full time job.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (St John's Verbal)
It was pretty well-documented about Ponds and his parents. Ponds had been telling many people be was headed to SJU, but his mom liked Cooley and his dad loved Shamm and the PG development. The rumor (or the intended use of rumor) was to describe some of the news from last week saying this could stretch till the spring.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (St John's Verbal)
Isn't that believeable though?
After cancelling 2 or 3 announcements, one gets set the next day and kept the day after. Coincidence?
I don't know, but when a player is down to 2 schools and one says "We're sorry but we couldn't hold out any longer," and the recruit commits somewhere else in less than 2 days later, it tells me that he was somewhat pushed to that decision.
He was probably headed to SJU anyway, just made that decision and debate with his family a virtual non-factor.
I really don't see that point as a big deal.

Re: '16 NY PG Shamorie Ponds (St John's Verbal)
With him saying for so long that he was going to St. John's, I'm sure that word made it back to Cooley and the staff that he was eventually going to be SJU bound, which probably caused them to move on White (who is a pretty good contingency plan) and secure the commitment.rjsuperfly66 wrote:It was pretty well-documented about Ponds and his parents.
