It was pretty well-documented about Ponds and his parents. Ponds had been telling many people be was headed to SJU, but his mom liked Cooley and his dad loved Shamm and the PG development. The rumor (or the intended use of rumor) was to describe some of the news from last week saying this could stretch till the spring.

With him saying for so long that he was going to St. John's, I'm sure that word made it back to Cooley and the staff that he was eventually going to be SJU bound, which probably caused them to move on White (who is a pretty good contingency plan) and secure the commitment.

I think if it was clear that an announcement was immediate, they would have held out a little longer. But when things keep getting pushed back, and keep getting pushed back, and then he has family telling media members this could last until next year, it makes it very hard. At that point, and like you said Swat, you have to look at the writing on the wall. Kid clearly likes SJU, wants to be there, family is trying hard to convince him otherwise, but you have no clue how it will turn out. Do you sit around waiting another 3-6 months? Or do you take option 2? PC clearly wanted Ponds, anyone who debates that is nothing more than a crazy fan.
